Now, to start off, I'd like to say that I am a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series! Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, being my favorite, with the newly released Peace Walker as runner up.

However, I have a horrible secret: I have never played the original Metal Gear Solid! Seeing as money is no object for now, though I would like to spend as little as possible, if possible.

Now, it has come to my attention that I can get the original Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 for roughly 8 bucks including S&H.

It has also come to my attention that I can get the updated remake, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which is for the Gamecube, for 20 bucks.

So, which one should I get? I'm no graphics whore, and I can do without a few cut-scenes, but only if I get pretty much the same amount of info as without them. So, Escapees, which one shall I shell out the money for?
to answer your question, Twin Snakes (the remake) makes snake out as a much more unstoppable badass then i remember in the original. plus (this might just be a problem with my copy) Psycho Mantis is a lot harder. You probably already know how to beat him. in the original, the "hideo" screen popped up every 20 seconds or so. in "Twin snakes" it only ever pops up 3 times, nowhere near enough to reduce all his health even on Easy mode... like i said, maybe my games just broken. plus, just switching it without the screens doesn't seem to work.

and you lucky begger, where have you been able to find this all so cheaply!? my friends been looking for copies of either games on the internet and can't find any prices under £50!

And calling me 'clearly ignorant' just tends to feel more insulting than simply telling me I'm wrong.
yeah, people do seem to be much more annoyed when they are called ignorant. It sounds much more insulting for some reason when it only means that they don't actually have experience/knowledge with/of the topic. you should be just as offended of being ignorant of the differences in the games as you would be if i said you were ignorant to the flight mechanics of airships in a JRPG. i am assuming here that you are not a JRPG air-ship captain at this point, because i am ignorant of this fact.

I buy most of my games used.

Look em up on www.amazon.com

Good stuff!

And again, thank you everyone for your input, but the die has already been cast! I got the original PS1 version for $5.21! It should arrive in about 4 days. I'll tell you all how much I liked it!

the originals better

(edit)

The GC ver. does look pretty, but its altered. I just don't care for it as much as the PS1 original.

Like someone else said, play PS1 first, then play the GC to see the changes... otherwise just play the PS1 game.

I was not impressed by the game cube version. It seemed uncanny even for a Metal Gear title. The original is much more worth it.

You and I my friend share a great taste, not only in the love of MGS but in the Love of MGS 3.
Which is why I hope you'll take my advice and get MGS: Twin Snakes.
Its a lot better, with redone voice acting and added gameplay from Sons of liberty. Trust me, You shan't regret it
