Now, to start off, I'd like to say that I am a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series! Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, being my favorite, with the newly released Peace Walker as runner up.

However, I have a horrible secret: I have never played the original Metal Gear Solid! Seeing as money is no object for now, though I would like to spend as little as possible, if possible.

Now, it has come to my attention that I can get the original Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 for roughly 8 bucks including S&H.

It has also come to my attention that I can get the updated remake, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which is for the Gamecube, for 20 bucks.

So, which one should I get? I'm no graphics whore, and I can do without a few cut-scenes, but only if I get pretty much the same amount of info as without them. So, Escapees, which one shall I shell out the money for?

If you have a PS3, you could download it for 10 bucks off the Playstation Store. If not, get the PS1 version. I heard the Gamecube version didn't do so well.

I admit I haven't played the original PS1 version, but I experienced it by playing Twin Snakes, and holy crap. It was amazing.

Personally, I love the first game more than the gamecube version.

Mostly because the gamecube version decided to include a bunch of cutscene action stunts, something that both felt out of place and made the cutscenes even longer than before.

Go for the PS1 version, sure the Gamecube version looks better but the original just feels better overall.

All I can say is that the original was very fun. Haven't played TS, as I'm a PC gamer and only MGS 1 and 2 have been released for the PC. but I do recommend you play the original PS1 version, since it's cheap and great.

The Twin snakes was fun, plus they included little extra, like first person shooting. It is very useful against ocelot.

Useless trivia time! The series did not actually start there.
Back in 1987 Konami developed the original 8-bit Metal Gear [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_%28video_game%29] game for the MSX2 console, followed by the sequel (you guessed it) Metal Gear 2. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_2:_Solid_Snake] Ports/remakes of both of these games are available on the MGS3:Subsistence Disc 2. Just in case you're interested to have a look. Some of the storyline and characters from those two are also translated into the first Metal Gear Solid. You can still enjoy the game without it, the plot's not too tied up, but it still serves as a bit of insight.

Still doesn't help the fact that they're bloody hard...

Twin Snakes have all the cut scenes re-done with extra matrix movies. All the same voice actors came back but they changed the voice of Grey Fox its someone else.

You can also buy MGS1 off the PSN store for 10-15 dollars. Twin Snakes is also very rare and its hard to find it.

You can also MGS:essentials pack for 20 dollars which had MGS1,MGS2 and MGS3
They changed Grey Fox to Rob Paulsen, and I think it's worth the fix.

Get Twin Snakes. It's just awesome, and easier to find.

Or you can just sell Snake Eater and buy Subsistence. Or something like that. It's got a few fancy features, but it's not much of an expansion on the original MGS3.

The free camera movement is awesome, though.

Get the original. Grey Fox's VA was way better and the FMVs were less...Devil May Cry.

I'd say download the original from the PSN and try out twin snakes aswell, since you're already a fan of the series why not try them all?
