You really think so? The original VA had a (minor) speech defect.

@OT: I'd say get Twin Snakes. It includes all the great gameplay mechanics of Sons of Liberty and the AI is better. The additional cutscenes are also fun to watch, if you're able to forgive them to be over-the-top at times (helicopter takedown comes to mind)

Well I knew that! But I can just get ROMs of those...
But if that's how you think you might as well also just download the PSone version... fuckin pirate.

Doesn't matter either way cuz they both rock.
I did prefer Twin Snakes gameplay wise, but you can't beat the original

Well, I HAVE looked into getting the PS1 game on a ROM, but it said I needed a Joystick to play. I rather spend 8 bucks for the PS1 version, and play sprite-games, like the original Metal Gears, on the PC.

I'm more of a console-gamer anyway...

The original just works a bit better, and the GC version feels a bit easy in places thanks to the addition of fist-person aiming and rolling. The Ocelot battle, for example, is a piece of piss on GC.

The voice acting, overall, is better on the GC. However, Liquid Snake has a far more grating voice in TTS, and the characters are no easier to connect with and understand (which is quite important in the world of MGS, as you probably know).

Now, to start off, I'd like to say that I am a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series! Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, being my favorite, with the newly released Peace Walker as runner up.

However, I have a horrible secret: I have never played the original Metal Gear Solid! Seeing as money is no object for now, though I would like to spend as little as possible, if possible.

Now, it has come to my attention that I can get the original Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 for roughly 8 bucks including S&H.

It has also come to my attention that I can get the updated remake, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which is for the Gamecube, for 20 bucks.

So, which one should I get? I'm no graphics whore, and I can do without a few cut-scenes, but only if I get pretty much the same amount of info as without them. So, Escapees, which one shall I shell out the money for?
The original, I personally think, has a lot more emotion than the Gamecube version. It truly is one of those times where a reboot feels more like a cashing in on by the fans.

And Yes, I do own them both. The original just feels so much stronger, even though Meryl's poor reading of 'Aut-Eh-Khan' in favor of an 'Oh-Teh-Khan' (Otacon's name) gets under my skin slightly, but still, PSX version over the Gamecube, unless you haven't got the choice between either one.

After all, Metal Gear is better than no Metal Gear, I say.

I'd say get the original. As someone else said, it feels like it has more emotion than the remake. The voice acting in the remake just seems blank sometimes. The soundtrack in the remake was changed from the original(for the worse) but other than that there's not much difference between the two games.

Maybe it's because I grew up with MGS1 rather than having to make the choice between MGS1 and Twin Snakes, but the original VA is Grey Fox to me. There's no one else. It's not quite as strong as...say, replacing David Hayter, but it's not far off. Some of Grey Fox's lines are still ingrained into my brain even though I haven't played in...ooh, maybe a decade?

I've played both games through, multiple times, and I just can't shake the "ehhhhhhh Not right" feeling when he talks in Twin Snakes.

And what speech defect? o_O I never noticed anything.

Go to Wal-Mart and get the triple pack. $20 for all three. Can't be beat. Or just wait for MGS3 for 3DS. I cant wait for that.

I understand what you mean, I grew up with the original version as well, but I always thought that Grey Fox was by far the worst VA in the game - when I first played Twin Snakes, hearing the line "Watch out, Snake" led to me thinking "THANK GOD THEY REPLACED THAT OTHER GUY - this is the perfect MGS alright".
About the speech defect... well, he lisps. I have heard worse, but it's very clearly noticable and I can hardly believe you didn't hear that. Bugged me from the very beginning - one of the most badass characters EVAR (second possibly only to Pyramid Head) talking like that didn't feel right at all.

Erm... it depends on whether you want to experience one of the best games ever made or the stupid Hollywood-cutscene-toting (he jumps on a moving MISSILE), broken-level-design-because-you-couldn't-FPS-when-they-designed-them piece of shit they churned out for the gamecube.

Basically get the PS1 version. I played through all of both (big MGS fan here too) and frankly couldn't believe how bad Twin Snakes was. The original is amazing and still in my top 3 games ever.

Wrong. Couldn't be more wrong. OP, please don't take the advice of clearly ignorant people such as this person.

The good game.

The stupid game.

Edit: Any moderator wanting to give me wrath for saying "clearly ignorant" please please watch the videos or ask an MGS literate person in the office before you do anything else. If anyone deserves mod wrath here it is roflcopter for what has to be wilful deception.

What Worgen said. (Super Smash Bros Brawl reference mind you) But it doesn't have to be Kirby ya know.

OT-Play the original or the Remake first. They're both good

I do remember there were cutscene differences, an OST change (that really wasn't necessary) and voice acting re-dos. And they added that one scene. I don't think there were many other changes. Although maybe I'm wrong, since I haven't played the PSX one in a long time, that doesn't exactly give you good reason to flame me.

And I will agree that some of the things they added in the cutscenes were extremely unnecessary.
You said "Gameplay-wise, they're nearly identical." They are not. First person shooting completely broke all the level design of MGS1 as originally you could only do this with the PSG-1 and the Stinger Launcher (and Nikita missiles, but that was another matter). Now you could do it with any gun, so basically once you got the silencer no guard was any threat at all. This is a MASSIVE gameplay difference. Then there was other stuff, dropping off ledges etc. But the first person shooting was the big thing that totally broke Twin Snakes.

To say that they are "nearly identical" is ignorant. It doesn't mean you're a bad person, it just means that you don't know what you're talking about. And that is factually established so I can't see how it is flaming.
