I'll tell them he's real till they move out. Even if they don't want to believe it'll still be amusing to see them getting presents from Santa at 18.

basically i'll lie as long as they want me to

what should i break them out of the magic of childhood preemptively ?

that comes soon enough.

you may think that beliving in things that aren't true is wrong but i disagree and besides even then you'd be enforcing your own beliefs on your children and i don't really feel comfortable with that either.

Death: HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO *BE* HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
Susan: With tooth fairies? Hogfathers?
Death: YES. AS PRACTICE, YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
Susan: So we can believe the big ones?
Death: YES. JUSTICE, MERCY, DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
Susan: They're not the same at all.
Death: YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER, AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE, AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET, YOU TRY TO ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD. AS IF THERE IS SOME, SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE, BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
Susan: But people have got to believe that, or what's the point?
Death: YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT AREN'T TRUE. HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME?
The "magic" of childhood comes from imagination, hopes, dreams, and the drive and capability of pursuing them, preferably while your parents and other family give emotional support and enough time and space to experience the world on your own terms. It's about adventure and exploration.

It does not come from whimsically encouraging a child make a huge emotional investment on a big fat lie. It does not come from paranoia that your parents instill into you by constantly threatening you that "Santa won't bring you gifts if you're naughty" and reminding you that "Santa's elves are watching you all the time".

Simple question, many answers?
Not letting them sit on Santa's lap at the mall that is for sure... The man dressed up as Santa might be Catholic... Or maybe a Priest! And we all know what happens to your kid then...
OFFENDED, I AM!
