If the story is accurate, I would have just pointed out that the only reason she has her life handed to her on a silver platter now is because of her "bad immigrant, dropout, scum of the earth" ancestors, and perhaps offered to inquire about local KKK membership on her behalf. I would have refused to respond to her after that. The beauty of life is that she will get her just comeuppance eventually. Karma's a *****.

I'd say most people working at those places are either around High School/College age people, working for extra cash, or retired adults working because they are bored. Most dropouts aren't actually scum at all, they may have not had the support or the brains to make it through. Being uneducated doesn't make someone stupid, and that ***** is a lot worse than a dropout, considering the way she sounds seems as if she'll probably go out for Playboy soon. This is why education theese days is borked. Instead of teaching us they just hand us a book and tell us a project is due in 4 days. If teachers actually did their job and told us how, why and what we need to learn then the world would be a better place. Alas schools seem to be just an place to dump off your kids were they MIGHT learn a few Spanish words and some math concepts, where if you do anything slightly independent you get screwed over. Honestly i think schools have forgotten why they are there.

Don't be obnoxious and think you are right about, admit that you are wrong and shouldn't have spoke out in class, but that you were protecting your heritage. You didn't throw a punch, that you tried to debate it on a civil level..
YOU ARE IN THE WRONG. Accept that. You shouldn't have carried on with her. The school system sucks, BUT you have the right to take it higher. If the principal doesn't want to hear anything of it, take it higher. At least you haven't screwed your relationship with them.
(My suggestion is, that you were disrupting class, but that was because you were insulted with her having no right in the situation.)
Oh yeah, and after getting this resolved into some dentions.. Switch out of that class asap, again take it up with the person who finally helps you.. Say that last year, you had a less then stellar teacher but you were still competent in class.. Ask if you can take test of your aptitude.
