Let's pretend each of us is the main character of our own ongoing story, about our real lives, in a book, movie, comic etc.
Based on your beliefs, morals, and what you stand for* what would the audience think of you? Would they root for you? Find you evil? find you to be the good guy? Think you've changed for the better or worse? Most importantly, how would your character development appear to an audience?
*Taking Batman and the Punisher as examples, both are vigilantes, both have had their family gunned down, and both have dedicated their lives to avenging them. Since his start, the Punisher has used guns and lethal force to kill most criminals, he could be seen as an antihero, fans can understand him and his choices of action, and root for him. Batman, however is opposed to using guns and never kills because his parents were killed by guns. Batman fans can understand his morals and his choices regarding how to deal with criminals and root for him. The difference being that if a story came out where Batman was going around gunning down his enemies, his fans would be find it odd, out of character and probably be upset, because for years his moral code proved that he would never be expected to do this.
Keeping in mind that you are a character whose events have been witnessed by many fans, who know your story up to this point, what would the audience think of your choices and how you are now, as a character in an ongoing story?
