360 is on 7 years now, PS3 on 6. WiiU is releasing and there are rumours flying about like bullets on a battlefield of the new Xbox and Playstation. We still have a while before that lifespan they gave us comes to an end, so do you regard a new generation as too early or suitable?

Lets say PS4 / Xbox720 came out next year, quick succession in the way Apple releases their products, would you buy it? Or would you wait it out for a while, let titles build up?

Would it annoy you? Have you only JUST gotten your hands on a 360 / PS3?

I don't believe we'll be seeing anything for a while personally, far less next year. Sony and Microsoft still has research to do to make their consoles as unique and powerful as possible and not just slightly better. Not only that, it would turn attention away from Move, Kinect and Vita which doesn't sound like a healthy business option :/

Are you saying that Sony and Microsoft will bring out a new console every year or so. Hell it would annoy me!

I don't see a whole lot of need for another console generation right now.

The ones we have are capable of doing everything we want from a console.

If Microsoft and Sony put out new consoles in the near future, they will just end up being exactly the same as the current gen but slightly more powerful, and with some new gimmick that only the most casual of gamers cares about.

I for one don't want to see another console until virtual reality is perfected, and we can plug ourselves into World of Warcraft IX.

I'd say
"GODDAMMIT I JUST GOT THIS PS3 FIRST IT GETS HACKED NOW IT OBSOLETE OHHH AND IT HAS MOTION CONTROLS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK THIS IM GONNA GO PLAY SPORTS."
Or something a bit less obscene.

I don't see the need for a new generation yet; the consoles we've got are pretty damned good as they are. I'd be content to wait a few more years before we saw the next gen.

The only way I would get a new consol was if it turned out they made a new Fallout game for it, and it was even better than 3, and even then, that's a big IF.

They need to hurry up and release the next set of consoles. At the moment companies are struggling to bring out better games as they have to create them with old hardware. They have all these talks about how they wish to create all this weird stuff however all I want is some bloody updated hardware so the game developers can create some better stuff. Don't let the console create the gaming, let the game developers do it!

I wouldnt really see the point in it. There isnt exactly many more features they can tack on to their console, although i coulds see Sony trying to push 3d on their next system.

See, this is the problem i have with the industry. For all their innovations, there doesnt seem to be a clear direction for the market as a whole. It just seems at the moment, they have reached the peak of they can possibly do.

Just gotta have some faith i guess.

I just got my PS3 but I wouldn't care it probably push down the prices of all the games I want to play, outside of that I wouldn't care I tend to wait to buy consoles, cheaper, fewer glitches, and it's easier to pick when I can see all the games each has to offer.

Pretty much this. So if a new console gen does come out next year/the year after that, I'll legitimately be counting myself out, not pandering the industry's stupid excuse to continue bleeding money out of me.

That's more or less how every generation has worked. The X360 is a more powerful Xbox, the PS2 was a more powerful version of the PS1. The Wii was a slightly more powerful GameCube with a gimmick attached.

The next gen will be more than "slightly" more powerful than this gen. Consoles are essentially 2 year old PCs upon release (hence the price range of $300~400), with the PS3 being an exception because they went with some strange architecture. So the X360 is essentially a 2003 computer, the Xbox would be a 1999 or so computer. The Nextbox would be similar to a 2010 computer, and the PS4 should clock in at around the same speed.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new generation. A lot of the new games are getting close to the operational capacity of the current gen systems now (both Cryteck 3 and Frostbite 2 engines have to be toned down to run on current consoles), so it's time to bring out a new generation.

The X360 and PS3 would run until 2015~2016 as planned, while the new gen gets 2~3 years to get on their feet and establish a library.

Except 60 fps and 1080p... or actually open world shooters etc.

At the very least i'd like to see them add some RAM to them, it's dirt cheap nowadays and it would really help me not hate console ports so much...

I don't buy consoles until they have been out for about a year, year and a half, because they are cheaper by then and most of the glitches have been sorted out and the game libraries have been established so I can buy the console that has the most exclusives that are more to my taste. At the moment I do find a new generation unneccessary as I don't see what a new generation can do that the current one.

Too early

I'd wait. I did for the ps2, I did for the DS, I did for the 360, I did for the PS3.

Would it annoy you?
Yep.

Have you only JUST gotten your hands on a 360 / PS3?

Nah, been about 3 years I'd say.

I just got my Xbox 360, so I would be infuriated. I would believe Microsofts plans to torment me and specifically me were come to fruition!

Pretty much this. I plan on using this holiday to catch up on the Playstation move craze as well as get Resident Evil Operation Raccoon city and Sonic Generations among a few and the point it i won't have the money nor to buy a new $250+ system for awhile, sorry PSvita and 3DS :(
Plus the wii was the only console that really needed an HD change and possibly some improved motion controls when compared to the Move and the Kinect. ps3 and 360 are fine as they are, and the consoles still haven't been pushed to their limits yet so why make a new one?
