How would you make a M rated first party Nintendo franchise?

Funny this thread should be brought up. Considering Metroid is the only series with a remote chance of getting that far, this is one of the few times I don't care about sharing my ideas out of fear of it being stolen years later.

Ever since Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, I envisioned a Peach RPG. One where she saves his fat arse for once, set in a large exploration world kinda like Majora's Mask/OoT. Give it a bit of blood and gore, but nothing over the top like a carried away Quentin Tarantino film. Keep the jumping combat, but add in melee weapons after a bit and ranged weapons down the road. Add some mature dialog, and at one point with no where else to turn, she sleeps with Wario to enlist his help. Just a style completely opposite of what it currently is now, because by Talos, Nintendo has become the dead horse to beat due to running out of dead horses.

Nintendo OWNS some weird stuff. Earthbound, Advance Wars, Xenoblade, Baten Kaitos, Metroid of course.
I've seen those go really, really dark at the drop of a hat. But dark won't get you an M rating, you need to add in some gratuitous violence and nudity. With that in mind...I vote for Nintendogs.

I'd like to see a Pokémon game that focuses on large-scale, serious war rather than friendly one-to-one matches between trainers. It's shown explicitly in X/Y and the anime that Pokémon fight and die in war, and it seems like older fans could get some mileage out of that, provided they don't go the stupid route and make it a totally gratuitous, massive sarcastic airquotes "gritty" affair.

Actually, come to think of it, why weren't the Mystery Dungeon games rated M? There was some terrifying shit going on there.

Kirby's Epic Circle Jerk?
Zelda: A Link to Chat Roulette?

Rather than see their child friendly games turn grimdark mature I'd rather see something new from them. Unless it's related to Eternal Darkness, which is an M game they made and an awesome horror game at that.
Oh, that's a better idea.

The same way I would make an NC-17 rated Pixar movie: I wouldn't.

Who gives a fuck? They have their market and they're serving it well. A good business move is going into an underserved market, not an over-saturated one like "Mature" games...

Plus, the only way to play a Nintendo game is to buy a Nintendo console, so they can die in a fire for all I care.
I agree and disagree. Although the child market is not nearly as big as it was, 68% of gamers are over the age of 18. If you don't believe me, look up theesa.com and look at the game player data. Times have changed and Nintendo should too...

It's worth noting that in 2010, Nintendo themselves published a CERO D game in Japan. (CERO D = ESRB M). The game in reference is Zangeki No Reginleiv [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zangeki_no_Reginleiv]. Now, as far as producing risque material themselves, there has been one game Nintendo developed that got a CERO C rating (CERO C = ESRB T). That game is Famicom Tantei Club Part II: Ushiro ni Tatsu Shojo [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Tantei_Club_Part_II:_Ushiro_ni_Tatsu_Sh%C5%8Djo]. So what does that tell us? Well, in Japan at least, Nintendo isn't afraid of diversifying its demographic at least a smidgeon. However, Nintendo Of America has carefully and consistently cultivated a family friendly image in the west. And without a major paradigm shift I don't see that changing any time soon.

Darksiders 1 was pretty much a Zelda game reskined as an M rated game. So, that...

Simple: I wouldn't bother. Nintendo has repeatedly said they're not interested in making M-rated games so don't get your hopes up for ever seeing one from them. It's kinda hard to make hypotheticals when said hypothetical has been shot down.

Kirby in a Inu-Curry style horror would be interesting, a blissfully ignorant pink ball in the mind of someone so broken and walking out unscathed, unaware of what happened to the poor person as he fights of evil horrors.

Well they are teaming up with Atlus for SMT x Fire Emblem, so...that. Or does it have to be a solo project? In which case, just a more graphic Fire Emblem.

I'd love to see a more futuristic zelda game. One where link rides around the streets of neo-tokyo on his motorbike, Epona. Where Ganon is some kinda of corrupt government official, and Zelda is the leader of the underground resistance. I'd play the shit out of that game.

Oooooor.... just an idea guys, do what the Persona series has done to get itself an M rating and have writing and themes made for mature audiences...

And then slap on violence and gore.

Well in all honesty I think the reason that they get that lovely rated M for mature thing is because of Mara.
Remember, rated M for Mara. XD

But other than that yeah, having mature writings and themes can still give you that rating. I just find it funny how most people nowadays think that to be rated M it has to have things like boobs and excessive gore. >.>

I have had similar ideas in the past involving Link being a hacker. Where all the dungeons would be virtual reality representations of firewalls and network security. The cyberpunk/fantasy mash up aesthetic would look super cool.

An M-rated nintendo game would be easy. they wouldn't even need to change all that much. Just take the current formula they have for the fire emblem games, take all the mature themes and complex character relationships they normally only lightly hint at or push into the background, and center the game around those details rather than the cookie cutter, black and white tales of good versus evil they usually do.

Can't picture any other nintendo IPs being M-rated without doing so in a cheap, exploitative way... nintendo traditionally favors minimalism in their stories, which works for many things, but making a game that has adult overtones without being immaturely fixated on being mature isn't one of them.

Not sure if it's a first party title or not, but I second whoever said a second eternal darkness game. A sequel to sanity's requiem would sell me a wii-u.

Nintendo? Oh, yeah, I must have missed that Paper Mario game where all of the companions are realistically-drawn, well endowed magical girls and all of their abilities' animations show their heart-print panties.

Nintendo aren't throwing franchises at the adults. Mario, pretty much any sports game, especially WWE, Pixar games, card games adapted into video games, and neither is anyone else.

The Metroid Prime games are kind of like a subsiduary. The main games are still pretty cartoony.

There are almost certainly fanfics of this but:

Make Mario an actual Italian plumber. Bowser, the local mafia kingpin, kidnaps his girlfriend. Mario has to go and break his kneecaps while occasionally tripping on shrooms.

The end.
