For all those saying 'shit, let them find it out for themselves/their friends/internet tell them, /when they ask, explain...'

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This is how you get people like my friend who thought that girls pissed through their vagina, didn't know what a period was, and people thinking that doing it standing up stops you getting pregnant, because, y'know, gravity, man. You cannot rely on a 10 year old to question their own or their friends' knowledge of anything, or to cover all the bases; the internet cannot tell you how to make love, only how to make a woman airtight.

It is also how you get teenagers becoming massively insecure about being virgins, when all their friends are talking about having done it already - regardless of whether or not they have. Time has shown that the more and the earlier children learn about sex, the less likely they are to do it before they are ready (which of course varies from person to person.) My mum sat me down when I was about 7, and I didn't do anything potentially pregnancy-worthy til ten years later. School was bullshit.

To all the boys on this thread saying 'let them ask/find out themselves:' like to see you explain periods. A lot. That would be hilarious.

There's this one video of the guy who played that fat guy in Shaun of the Dead talking about it... it 'twas quite hilarious.

For me: Send them to public school.

I'm assuming you're a virgin.

On topic, I'd tell my son not to have sex until he can afford to have an abortion, you know, to be on the safe side.

If luck should go to shit and I had a daughter, I wouldn't need to have 'the talk' with her, because she'd be wearing a steel chastity belt so I wouldn't have to worry about Mary-Sue hooking up with Billy down the street.

Yeah, right. By the time I have kids,
A) They will probably have been bred in a tube, and
B) I won't have to actually talk to them about it, I'll just download it into their brains, Matrix-style.

THE FUTURE!

Next time I see him/her sitting on my bed-

"Hey! Guess what I did there!"
sir that's appalling grammar it's "hey! Guess WHO I did here!"

OT: I'm 14 and I knew everything I needed to know via the internet and curiosity I haven't had...The Talk... I don't think my parents bothered so I'm essentially in the clear.

I think I would be blunt if it was a boy and buy a few porn dvd and force him to watch it in his own room, but if it was a girl I'd go with Mr. Gency idea.

If my son asked I'd just give him the basics, such as the names of the reproductive organs and what does what. The rest I'll just leave to his education and for what ever reason he doesn't get this eduction, I'll just tell him myself.

If I have to tell my daughter, well I'll just leave it to my wife.

Lets say, you got yourself a 10-14 year old kid, innocent as can be.
How many 14 year olds you know that are innocent? Most kids from my old school had gotten laid by that age already.

And it depends on how mature my kid was. If they were childish, then I guess I'd let them find out at school. Let's face it, most kids find out from their friends before parents. However, if I thought that they were mature enough to hear it and not go "ewww" or anything, then yeah, I'd tell them whenever they asked.
Note the lets say, as in theoretically. Like, lets say you paid attention :3

I'd just tell my kid the minute they started asking about it. I mean there's no point in hiding it. Best they get laughing at 'hard' and 'come' out of the way before their teenage years.

For the most part Human biology lessons and sex ed at school covers the basics as far as the mechanics of everything (although I think it's right that mothers teach their daughters about certain things before time as it can be a frightening thing for them if not) otherwise I think the main focus of 'the talk' should be an emotional one.
And by that I mean not just sitting down once and talking about it but having an open relationship between parant and child about the emotional turmoil that is teenage life, mood swings, all forms of hormones, growing up in general as well looking at the morality of it all.

Parants have tough gig... poor things...

I wouldn't know where to begin. How about I actually have kids, and THEN worry about this.

I sit my son down and say "Son I think it's time we had a talk about sex. Do you remember that time when you came home from school early and..." conversation over

As early as possible. And I'm talking 'bout "coming out of the hospital with the baby"-early. That way I have full attention but can be certain I don't get awkward questions... plus I can say "I already told you" anytime after!

It all depends on the culture you live in. I live in Sweden so its all taught at school and comes naturally as we're not a bunch of repressed christian self-haters.
