Most people know the typical stereotype of gamers and people who just sit on the internet; antisocial, no friends, and tend to be the outcast

So I was curious to know how true this actually is within the population of the Escapist.

As for me, well I have a pretty pathetic excuse for a social life. The closest thing I have to friends are the people here. I was always the outcast at school and just tended to avoid people. Despite going out to a movie (I go at least twice a week) and usually dinner every weekend, I'm always by myself. I don't go with anyone. Ever. How sad is that?

So, what's your social life like and what has it been like through the years?

Non-existant.

And now I'm leaving to do R.E. homework. Ah, the wonders of being a highschool nerd. Thumbs up to being the epitome of cool.

Outcast is such a harsh word. I prefer to think of myself as a hermit sage, sitting atop the mountain in quiet self-contemplation of higher truths. Those engaged in the rat race, their minds sapped by the constant trials of day-to-day living, may risk the hazardous climb to the peak in order to glean some nugget of wisdom from me. By and large, however, they're so very wrapped up in their own lives as to be unable to recognize the necessity.

I have quite a few friends and a lot of people don't mind talking to me so I guess it's pretty good.

Most people aren't anti social because of video games. They just happen to hate people and pick up games as a hobby. So yeah, my social life is pretty much pathetic, but it's not because of games.

It's been below average my entire life.
BUT!

The friends I DO have, I am incredibly close with.
And like to see them whenever I can.
I do have dry spells occasionally, though.

But that's why I socialize a TON on this site.
:D

Well, I've somehow managed to both not have any sort of social life (seriously, I have next to no human contact outside of family and school,) and having a girlfriend. I have no idea how that managed to happen, but I'm not going to complain.

going laser tagging in a bit with some friends, so I think my social life is going rather well.

Plus, I am a man-whore, that helps :D

I used to be popular until I realised popular people more often than not turn out to be ass-holes so now I have maybe 5-10 friends whom of which I know where our loyalties lie.

Depends where I'm living. If I'm at home, i.e. middle of fucking nowhere, then my social life is pretty shit, one night a week where I hang out with the same guys and do the same things over and over. Here at university however, well, I have been partying 3 nights a week, at various locales to pretty good success, so I dunno I guess I managed to pull a social life off somehow...

My nearest friend lives 1.5 hours away from me. So no, I do not have a social life.

It's been worse though. Last New Year's Eve I actually went somewhere (that friend that lives 1.5 hours away from me, hadn't seen in him 3 years) and I catch a film more often than I used to do. Mostly with my niece and/or brother though. And last weekend I tried to go to Top Gear Live with another friend, but he had to cancel because of his intern-ship. I was really looking forward to that.

Dad's still not satisfied though, says I need to get out more. Hell, I do want to get out more, it's just that I have no one to go out with and do the things I actually like. What does he want me to do? Go to the dingy village bar with my chav co-workers and get drunk every weekend? Never.

I want people around me with whom I can have a relaxed drink in a non-dingy bar and talk about random geeky things with. People I can play games with, people I could watch nerdy movies with, go lasertagging/airsofting/paintballing with, gods I'd love to be more social.

I'm not the type of person who goes out every single week, as I prefer to spend my time inside, that's just the kind of person I am. However I may step outside every couple of months, if there is a film that I?m looking to see at the cinema or in the extremely rare occasion that somebody invites me to a party.
