You're missing the point. No matter how sever you make the punishment for a crime like murder, it's not going to stop people. Most people who commit these crimes don't think they will get caught. People have always been this horrible. The only reason you are hearing about it now is because of the increased media coverage. If there is a rape half way around the world you can hear about it. Just a few years ago this would have been impossible. Things only look like they are getting worse.

In ancient Greece it was normal for a rich married man to have a harem of young boys for his pleasure.
In feudal Japan when a Samurai needed to test his sword he would take a RANDOM villager order them to kneel and chop off there head.
I'm sure I don't need to explain the witch trials, except to say that the preferred method of killing witches was hanging them not burning although that was used with some frequency as well. Along with drowning, crushing, stoning (not the fun kind), decapitation, and just about any other painful and/or horrific method of killing your fellow man

Humanity is comprised of the lowest of the low, people who do disgusting, unspeakable things to other people... but all we can do is hope and pray and be thankful for all of the good this species has to offer, that it does offer every single day.
