In Halo 3, ODST, and Reach, you can't set your nickname/whatever-it's-called to "Cody". Which was a damn shame for my neighbor, Cody, because everyone else we knew, me included, was able to put their own 4-letter names.

I still don't understand why they banned that name of all names. Like, uh, what? Apparently it had something to do with the drug codeine, but that's still absolutely fuck-tarded, since Cody isn't used as slang for codeine, and besides, Mary and Jane are both still acceptable nicknames according to (Bungie/Microsoft).

Call of Duty 4, every server in existence: gay, homosexual, lesbian, penis, vagina, testicle, etc are all prohibited in just about 150% of servers, and frankly, it's retarded (oh, thats another one) because these are technical words, some even scientific and in the fucking dictionary. Why is saying them considered a bannable offense?

I swear, the admins and rules in a typical Call of Duty 4 server are plain retarded.

I used to play FFXI and there was an item in game called the Pahluwan Khazagand. If you had word filter on, it always ended up as Pahlu??? ?hazagand. Some of my friends left the word filter on just to see what hilarity resulted.

It filtered out some letters that formed the word "norb" once. I still have no idea why.

And apparently the Phantasy Star Online filter censored the word "subnormal." It also censored "masterbate" but not "masturbate."

I've seen one forum censor the word "Christmas," replacing it with "carpet," leading to a fair bit of confusion. I don't think we ever figured out who did it or why.

In monster hunter tri, the word "behind" is banned, it just doesn't show up in text, which makes for some confusing tactics when you cant tell anyone to "get behind the monster to cut off its tail"

Apparently "behind" is German slang for something and that is why its banned.
And here I thought "behind" meant someone's ass or rear end, but what do I know?
It can but I think its the equivalent of the word fuck or something in German.
Actually, "behind" doesn't mean anything in German, they may have meant to censor "behindert" which translates to "retarded" or "disabled" but isn't used in an offensive way most of the time.

Can't use the word "Netflix" when reviewing a movie on the Netflix website. When I replace that word with the phrase "This Completely Retarded Online Service" it works just fine.

Surely you mean "For kittens lulz"?
In any case, you are a god amongst men for that prank. I can only hope to come up with something as epic in my lifetime.

As for preferred lulzy swearfilters, I've always been partial to the hugely random ones on 4chan/other such boards (anyone remember when, for just one small example, Emo got filtered to Bosnian... regardless of whether it was on it's own or in a word? Good case of YMMV... "go cry bosnian kid" is quite funny, "i'm going to join a dbosniannstration" is just weird), and old school Fark (or was it SA?) that took all the regular swears and replaced them with the names of fruit and veg. Except for one, which became "gently caress".

Gently caress off, you cranberrying melon pomegranater.
Or "I hate slemonhorpe"... :D

Weirdest thing is they sort of become memes of their own and even incorporate into in-joke slang after being in place for a while. And they're very obvious too... far better than the subtle ones that'll just silently delete a word or whatever and leave everyone puzzled as to what you actually said, and you potentially none the wiser unless you very carefully proofread everything AFTER posting it. Or the ones that block you from posting and delete what you've written ... sure I've even run into that problem HERE and ended up having to cut my post down sentence by sentence (and then word by word) until I found the bizarrely innocuous thing that had set it off.

I swear, one time I came across a filter that had it in for ... hmm, now, was it "slightly", or was it "very"? Either way, that's just mental.

I'm not convinced on this until someone can come up with a damn good reason why you'd need to be discussing your lesbian testicle in a CoD server chat...

Would it allow, say, "dyke bollock"?

A list of all the words banned from Space Marine. Starts off fairly normal and then you get things like "hairybeanbag" and "gutlocker", I'm not even sure what those mean.

I don't know about forums, but my email filter at work stops any emails that contain swearing from being sent.

It also blocks you from putting 3 kisses in your email should you wish to (i.e. xxx) as it thinks you are talking about porn!

2 or 4 kisses is fine, but 3 is a no-no!

My English teacher made me re-write a piece of work because I wrote "Alfred leapt up," and my friends kept laughing. Only later did they tell me that Ryan had nicknamed his knob "Alfred". Dunno if that counts. Hope so.

Totally possible, I've seen filters that banned normal words that contained letters that spelled a "bad" word, like some game banned the word "assault" which made it weird to talk about the assault class. Wish I could remember which game that was.

I remember Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast. You couldn't talk about your character's footwear because "shoes" includes the word "hoes".

One time my brother was on PSO, messaging a friend that he would be online next Saturday. It displayed as Sa****ay. We both were like "what the..." for a couple of seconds, before simultaneously realising that it had censored the word "turd" and burst out laughing.

Currently, Halo Reach has an utterly inscutable censorship system. I've had to go through a couple of "banned" video clip descriptions, deleting each innocuous word in turn to figure out which one is banned. I think last time it flipped out because I used the word "again"...?

It's also a perfectly normal surname, which can appear in big letters on trucks or whatnot. The kids usually get confused, and tourists from more or less English-savvy countries take a lot of photos. Hilarious.
Anybody remember the old Saturday Morning cartoons?

On gamefaqs earlier I posted a topic "So, I'm 12 hours into the game". It wouldn't take it because I said "I'm 12".
LOL. Is that new? I knew you couldn't confess to being underage on GFAQs, but I've never seen it censored. They just banned people who said "I'm 9."

I've seen a couple places ban "horsemen" because it contains the word "semen."

Also know that due to word filters, there are a few Pokémon you cannot trade online with their default names.

It's less funny,. but I've always wondered why in the text-chat system of many EA games, the word Jew is filtered, but others like Muslim or Christian aren't filtered. I just don't understand, if you don't want people to be talking about religion in your games, filter all the words, not just one...
That has nothing to do with religion in this context, thank South Park & Eric Cartman for that...

The most annoying ones I found were in the MTG gatherer database. I commented that one card would be "Great if played with Royal ******in". Auto filters are stupid.
