Your story made me laugh quite a bit just the thought of you chasing down a rabbit and battering it to death with an air rifle. I hunt down animals in the woods near me, though I have no air rifle so I rely on good timing and one of my knives. I don't eat the things, but its just good fun. Except the time I woke up a badger.
That made you laugh?
The thought of some chasing down an animal and beating it to death. Explain to me in what way is that even remotely amusing.
I just get the funniest picture of him wildly screaming and falling about trying to crush the rabbit to a pulp, just the fact he had to do so much damage just to kill this one rabbit. Death can often be completely hilarious, like the time I accidentally pushed my friends cat out of a window, where it fell in the way of a truck, and all I could think of was. "cats always land on their feet...unless they get hit by a truck". Seemed funny at the time and I brought him a new cat.
Oh yes, absolutely hilarious. /sarcasm

Good for you!!! Hunting, especially to get meat you intend to eat is not cruel. It's necessary. In the absense of other predators (which is probably the case where you are), man has to step in and keep the populations of animals in check himself. Ask your goofy friends this: which is more cruel, shooting a rabbit with a gun or biting and chewing on it for several minutes if not hours while it is still alive like foxes and wolves do. It drives me crazy how some people think that it's perfectly ok for animal predators to hunt and kill prey but not for people. Especially those who think that humans are nothing more than "evolved" monkeys anyway. If we are really just evolved monkeys as some say, why shouldn't we hunt? You can bet that the wolves that some of these same people revere so much couldn't care less how much the rabbits they kill and eat suffer for example.

The rabbits over the road are breeding like crazy and will destroy the new tress we are planting if left unchecked. So today i asked to see my grans broken air rifle and found it was in perfect condition. After a few test shots i threw on my cadet gear and went and sat in the woods and after a few missed shots and oppurtunites i got one. I hit its jaw , i didnt kill it so i chased it down, clobbered it with the butt of my gun and sunk another two pellets behind the eye. I bagged it and gutted it and am going to eat it tommorow. But according to some people i know this is "Wrong" "Cruel" and unessesscary. "Theres plenty of meat in the supermarket" says one idiot i know.
I am 16 and hunting isnt all that cmmon over here in england, i reckon accoutns for those commnets, but what do you think?
First of all, learn what type of weapons are appropriate for hunting certain animals. It's cruel to put an animal through unnecessary pain, and beating one to death is just senseless. A clean shot to the head when you caught it would probably have sufficed.

I hunt myself, but it just pisses me off when people are going out "for the thrill of the kill", or to vent out their aggressiveness. Use a punching bag or something.
It was my first time. I did shoot it in the head, i could tell by the blood, but it started runnign around like crazy, and it takes to long to reload, so i caught it and tried to break its neck with my hand but it didnt work, so i used the quickest method available to me. I follwed up with shots just to make sure. I took it home and gutted it myself, and just had it in a stew. Also what else am i suppsoe to use? A shotgun would render the meat indedible and i do not poses a licence

In the Uk you dont, just land owners permission for things like rabbits. They are a pest so most people are more than happy to let you.

You don't know how to hunt because you didn't kill the animal cleanly and it probably suffered quite a bit before it died because you obviously can't shoot properly.
As i said before it was hit in the head, that was the only place it was bleeding. The place the aim in just behind the eye and i was aonly a few centimeteres off, at a fair distance, i killed it as fast as i could, and because it was my first kill, the other two shots were comfirmation.

Well, you are filling in for natural predators that humans have driven off, so by all means, kill the little bastards, you are preventing starvation and you get tasty meat to boot!

hey Ted Nugent hunted for his food. Besides rabbits breed like crazy. If left uncheck they will exhuast there food. So if anything it is an act of mercy to thin out there numbers.

at least thats what South Park told me.

I'm fine with hunting and though I have never gone I want to (I'm trying to get my friend to take me along the next time he goes). But I don't like people killing the animals and wasting them, I'd rather they eat them. Which luckily most people who hunt seem to do.

But one thing I do have a problem with is exactly what you did (no offense): Hunting with air guns or pellet guns or BB guns just because that's whatever they have, but they're not powerful enough to kill the animal so it either goes off wounded to die slowly or live the rest of its life in pain, or you chase it down and brutally kill it, another slow and painful death.

Hunting doesn't have to mean animals suffer, which is something I hate to see. So if you're going to hunt, use something that will actually kill it.

WOAH-HO did you just say hunting isnt that popular over here?
there like 5 gun clubs around where i live...
its not inhumane if they are breeding and as long as you have the permission to do so then yeah its alright.

the facts you butted it and sunk 2 in the head was un-nessicary.
you supposed to grab it by the back legs and karate chop the back of its neck...instant death.
the fact your using a random pellet gun is a no go...go and get yourself a hunting air gun.
mine is 2000 pounds to buy but i got it less then half price.
it puts a clean hole in the skull...and im never worried about missing becuase you dont run around..
a tip is to get a good rifle and find a nice little spot to sit on a sunny day...sit out there for a few hours this might get you alot of rabbits. sit around and dont move.
you should also get a suppresor for your rifle too.

I did have my sights set on a proper co2 air rifle wiht scope and supressor but my mother wouldnt have any of it. I butted due to panic and wanting to end it before it got away into the bushes. A reason i started this thread was so that i could garner a few tips, but i forgot to include that in the op. I did some test shooting with my rifle and it rips though cans at about 30 meters away, and the rabbits are by no means shy and their warrens in open clearings with plenty of camping spots. I had also scouted out good spots long before. I checked the skull and i now know why it wasnt killed outright. i hit it in the nose about 2 centimetres in front of the in front of the eye, i spent today adjusting my aim, and plan to go out again tommorow.
Also im fairly sure i broke its neck on the first strike with my butt, but due to my inexperiacne i think i saw its last few twitches.

I live in the UK and when the hunting ban came into effect I was all for it, even though I knew most people wouldn't stick to it (toffs can always get away with things. Unless they're called Jeffrey.). However, although I disagree with hunting, I can't say I have a problem with it when done for either of the following two reasons:

1. A cull (to control population), as long as it's done humanely (i.e. a shot to the head, not hunting with dogs, and so on).
2. Hunting for food (again, must be done humanely).

Hunting for sport is a tradition, but it's wrong. What gives us the right to kill animals that would otherwise live peacefully and undisturbed by humans? Hunting for food is alright because then we are simply reverting to what our ancestors did, save with better weaponry (which actually may increase the chance of a quick and painless death for the animal). Culling, too, is acceptable because it is used to control overpopulation which is ultamitely done for the benefit of the surviving population. Obviously, hunting an endangered species is wrong no matter what.

And FTR, Sarah Palin was a douche (yes, we did see US politics on the UK news channels...).

no brah get a proper compressed air one...not Co2 the compressed air i have makes the gun more silent...+supressor there can be 6 rabbits next to eachother and they wont notice whats going on untill the 3-4th one drops...also make sure your rifle is zeroed in at 60 yards if your gunna wait for rabbits in one spot and a bipod would work well too.

I can get much closer than 10 yards, the woods that i am hunting in dont have visibilty any better than 15 at max. There a a clearing where they bask and there are plenty of places to lurk. Thats why i thought my gun would suffice, as i am shooting at such close distances.
I am not really interesting in bagging more than 1 at a time either, as gutting them is a lenghting process (for me anyway). If i miss then the spray of leaves will be enough to scare them away.
I could probly go without a bipod, i have fairly steady arms thanks to cadets and the hardware we use there is much heavier, and we sit aroudn alot longer.
