I usually start on the medium setting, unless the game is like a familiar pair of pants. Such as Modern Warfare 2, I started on Hardened. Mass Effect 2 I started on Veteran. Planning on starting Halo: Reach on Heroic.

I NEVER start at the highest difficulty, though. There's always nuances to pick up, radio chatter to hear, and who doesn't love a second playthrough?

To me, easy mode is for unfamiliar games, or familiar, but I'm getting the shit kicked out of me on harder difficulties, and I play accordingly. That said, I really don't like it when easy is too easy, and especially where there's a huge gap between difficulty settings. Like elite beat agents. Breezin' has far too few notes on some songs to keep the beat, and the jump from Breezin' to Cruisin' is pretty big IMO.

I only play on easy or the lowest difficulty, if the game is no longer fun on the higher settings. It doesn't happen often, but it does make the games more fun.

Following on from the 'Games that you have to play on easy setting' post, I am not scared to admit that I always play games on the easiest setting.

I get my enjoyment from playing the game, progressing through it and seeing how it develops, and then finishing it and moving on the the next game. And I hate getting stuck somewhere and becoming frustrated with a game because I can't work something out or get past a certain section.

Does anyone else out there also usually play on 'easy' settings......?
I used to do this, but i find that i get more enjoyment out of it when there is a challenge now.

I usually play on easy for the same reason. The only game I've switched to normal (that I can remember) was Mass Effect because after a point it was just ridiculously easy.

I generally play once through on normal and then a second time through on easy to explore and screw around.

I used to always start a game on easy mode when I was a kid cos I was honestly terrified of the challenge
At around 16 I started seeing the fun in challenge and feeling like I earned the completion
So now I always start on normal. Second playthrough I crank it up to hard
Can't remember the last game I played on easy. Although right now DA:O is annoying the hell out of me with it's random difficulty curve and I keep getting tempted to put it on easy just to get through the harder fights

I usually start out on medium. If it gets too frustrating at that setting, I'll change it to easy, if the game has caught my interest and I want to see how the story and such develops. If it hasn't caught my interest, I stop playing.

Yeah, I always play on 'Recruit' or 'N00b' or 'Rtard', whatever they call the easiest setting. I work in a school, and my MW2-obsessed kids take the piss for it. But to be honest, I find life challenging enough; I play these games to relax and have fun, and endlessly crashing against an inpenetrable wall of frustratingly perfect enemies is neither relaxing nor fun. Give me a nice gentle wander through every time. I do play on Normal setting occasionally, but only when playing with others.

Insane, hardcore, hard, suicidal... Whatever the highest level of difficulty is in the game, that's where you'll find me.

Theres several reasons behind why I do this. First of all, not all of us can just simply "Move onto the next game." Money is funny, and these days she's tight.

I don't get any joy playing on easy mode. I end up plowing through a game in a very short amount of time and thus I end up feeling that I wasted $50/$60 dollars. I've also been playing video games since I was 4, so there would have to be a serious problem if there's a game I can't play on the highest difficulty.

That and I've noticed that I gather more attention from my non-gamer friends when I play on the highest difficulties. I love when people watch me play, and I've noticed that people love to watch me play when there's some form of suspense. A "What is going to happen next!" or "How will he get out of this jam!?" situation.

I remember reading or hearing some where that surgeons play video games to help improve their dexterity and reflex in there fingers. I have found that playing games helps improve your overall dexterity and reflex, not to mention if you play an FPS game the way you're SUPPOSED TOO, it also helps improve your hearing. Listening for those very small sounds in the area around me has made me aware of the lightest of noises, like this one time one of my lady friends was walking behind me and went to slap my ass and without looking behind me I put my hand there to deflect it because I could hear her hand passing through the air.

If you play RTS games like Starcraft on melee. "Melee is when you start off with one main building and a couple of workers and you have to build a base and an army and try to take over the map and destroy your opponent(s)." Playing these games helps improve your problem solving skills, for your opponent will constantly send problems your way and you must figure out a way to solve them as quickly as possible.

With these benefits to gaming, I often wonder why would anyone WANT to play on 'easy' mode when they consider themselves a regular gamer. If it's to enjoy the storyline, why not watch a movie instead? There you'll be able to enjoy the storyline on the easiest setting ever!

I have never found myself enjoying a games storyline any less due to it's difficulty... In fact, playing it on the hardest difficulties has made me appreciate the storyline a lot more because each piece of the story that I unlike feels extremely rewarding.

For me, it really depends on mood. Most of the time I don't really want a major challenge when I game. I just want to have the feeling of being in control of the game. Harder settings are unlike that in it that it makes you feel like you're entirely out of control of the game itself, making it rather counterproductive.

There are times when I do want to play the real deal though, but those tend to be few and far in between. I've got enough stress in my life to deal with more stress in my casual play.

Sorry. I didn't mean that in an arrogant way. :/
(I rarely buy more than 1 game a month)

I'll normally play on easy, if there is nothing between easy and normal available.
I don't play single player games for a challenge, I have enough online games for that.

I mostly do on the first few times through just to get the hang of it but I rarely go past normal. I'll never understand why saying "I beat it on Hard" is a bragging right.

Easy really makes it hard to get into. Usually, the screen is cluttered with an inexplicably placed HUD, indicators are everywhere, etc. Putting it on hard makes the game more enjoyable.

I usually start off on the normal or hard difficulty. Unless, of course, if the game is handing my ass back in tiny pieces. When that happens, I switch to an easier difficulty.
