As long as the game is fair it can beat my ass as much as it wants, as I know it was my fault for dying.
If it's unfair though (I would link to fake difficulty on TVtropes, but that requires entering it and I will never finish this post) I will choose normal or easy mode.

I play a game on whatever its individual idea of difficulty merits, iyswim?
If a game on easy is so easy it is pants then I will play a harder setting, if a game destroys me on normal then I have zero problem dropping the difficulty down to easy.
Basically I play on whatever difficulty allows me to have fun, so for example, easy on Star Ocean is not satisfying but easy on Bioshock is (I am really good at RP'ing and rubbish at FPS) If I'm not having fun, why am I playing? :)

Depends on what I want to experience. If the game is heavily story driven I tend to play on easy, if it's more of an action thing, I play on normal.

Yes, I'm an old man and my reflexes aren't as well as they used to be.

I have never played fallout 3 on anything but very easy. Same with left 4 dead, and halo, and all of the call of duties.
I did that too until I noticed I was one-shotting all the Yao Guai and I had more Stimpacks and ammo than I knew what to do with.

So I ramped it up to Very Hard.

And voila! Challenge restored.

Interesting. Are there many games that you have never finished?
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, because I couldn't beat the well of ancestors segment. It's the only part in any game that's totally beaten me.

Far Cry 2, because it's so damn repetitive. I can take it in short bursts, but it's tough.

Those are the only ones.

Impressive!

I stopped playing Far Cry 2 because of the annoying and constant re-spawning of the bad guys. Which designer thought that was a good idea??

Normal first. A lot of the time I'll play through again on hard and everything else. I like to have finished the game on every setting.

I've usually played on normal, for fear of the game throwing somekind of bullshit challenge to me, near the end, and not letting me change difficulty. However, I've grown a pair since, and usually play on hard. It's just a lot more satisfying when there's some kind of challenge involved.

I play on easy as well because i prefer the story and experience over challenge.

i do sometimes like a bit of a struggle in games as long as there is a way to pull out if it begins to get frustrating ( like the fat man from fallout 3)

the only game that i have replayed on a harder setting is brutal legend, just because i absoloutly can't get enough of that game.

I usually go with the normal setting. I rarely care enough about replaying later for harder settings - it's boring. Playing practically the same game again just for some "harder" shit? If it's not linear, maybe, but if it is - Hell no!

I like to start off on Normal and go from there. If the game is back breakingly hard to the point where I'm not having fun, then sure I'll happily drop down to easy mode (damn you Devil May Cry!).
Alternatively if it's too easy I will go to the hardest setting (*cough* Street Fighter 4*cough*).

Typically, normal on my first playthrough, hardest on my second.

I stay the hell away from easy mode. Having at least some challenge makes the game a bit more tense, and rewarding when you manage to succeed.

I don't usually put it on easy, because I like some challenge. I put it on Normal, so I at least have some failures behind me to make me feel like I've actually triumphed over the game, without actually making it overly difficult for myself.

I usually play on the normal setting at first then crank it up next play to hard.
Unless that game is Bayonetta and I had to start on easy as that is a tough game even on normal setting.

no... I never play easy in any game. for fps I usually go normal or hard/highest, RPG I keep at default and rts I start at easy and if I'm any good I switch to normal.

It's interesting to see that this is exactly the type of game people quite often drop the difficulty on. Whereas I am more inclined to drop the difficulty on say... (I'm actually at a loss. I'll check my collection.) Saints Row or GTA because I don't play them to "Win" I play them to be a dick.
Can you alter the difficulty on GTA?
Only use fists and bicycles = Hardmode?

I dunno. They're examples of games I would lower the difficulty on.

I regularly spawn Jets and Helicopters etc then base jump. So I use cheats, which is easier.
