So tell me... Was it the raiders? The Yao Gui? The Deathclaws? Have you been to the Dunwich Building yet? And how about that music they play when you're not listening to your Pipboy radio? I'm use to this stuff, being a Fallout fan, but I will admit that making it 3D and real-time returned a healthy respect for Deathclaws.

I almost quit playing it . . . then I started to figure out how it works, and I freakin' LOVED IT.

Best to play it on PC too.

The school. The first thing I did was go there and be terrified. Then the vaults. I haven't been, but the Dunwich Building is apparently this also.

And what the hell is TubbyCustard made out of anyway!? Human flesh?
Semen

And Fallout 3 can be scary. It's all in the way the sound is used.

Must. Resist. Grammer. Nazism. If you simply don't like it, don't play it. If you see even a glimmer of greatness in the game, take up some suggestions that people have posted.
Use VATS if you're not hitting people, it's not a cheat it is a core part of gameplay. I tend to like the hunting rifle, slow shooting, but accurate, then the 10 mm pistol, rifles tend to be less accurate. The Pip-boy has a light, if it is the atmosphere that is scaring you. Finally, try playing until you get the power armor perk, or buy and play operation anchorage, which gives you the perk at the end of it. The Brotherhood of Steel's power armor is one of the best in the game I think, I tend to use that or my Tesla armor. Finally, consider sinking points into repair, you can self repair your items, boosting their capabilities.

And play Galaxy News Radio. Decapitating ghouls with bullets isn't as creepy when you have a overly excited DJ screaming in your ear. Good songs too.

I had a nervous feeling of whats going to happen the first time I played fallout, but got over it quickly, only real scary thing that happened was when i was ambushed from behind by two super mutants i didn't know were there. And even that was just a make me jump moment.

I don't like bugs so the ants were a bit much for me and I don't like things popping out at me, so the feral ghouls kinda scared/surprised me quite a bit, but other than that, nope. Pretty good game. Better than New Vegas, in my opinion. Mostly because you could ACTUALLY PLAY after the big event that changed the entire game world. Get your shit together Obsidian!!!

I'm not following here. Are you worried that the game will be a big let down after hearing all the hype about how great it is or do you find the notion of a post apocalyptic world frightening?

I think it's ridiculous to expect to be able to play after the ending, considering how much the game's world has changed. There are multiple different endings for most of the settlements and factions, some of them changing completely. That would be an entirely different game in itself. Besides, that was the same way Fallout 3 was without Broken Steel, and Fallout 3 didn't have an epilogue like New Vegas did. (The slideshow only changed from 3 different things depending on your karma.)

Yeah, the atmosphere of F3 doesn't help the feeling of scaredness, especially when you can hear a ghoul/deathclaw/whatever but you have no idea where it is. Best advice I can give is to just stick with it and plough on. Oh, and to go to the Dunwich Building as well, full of kittens and rainbows, that is.
400 hours and I still have a hernia every time I see a Giant Radscorpion.
mother deathclaw in fallout new vegas

*stealthboy on,3 miles away to the point not even boone is firing at her, super scope mod installed on sniper rifle*

*rifle shot to the head for sneak attack, doesn't go down*

*mother deathclaw looks directly at me in my scope, i de-scope to reload and she reaches me within those .4 seconds of reloading and i throw my mouse in the air out of fear from her coming at me so fast*

fucking christ i have never gotten so freaked out from something coming at me so fast, it one hit killed boone by tossing him to the side like a ragdoll, thankfully i had my auto-gauss rifle with 3 mods on it with a direct hit to the face on it to take it down.

The only parts that I felt remotely scared was in some of the dark subway tunnels filled with zombies. Sometimes you don't know when a bunch will pop up and attack you. Of course, it stops becoming scary once you're used to it and have a character that can literally demolish them into squish red giblets. It starts becoming rather entertaining to take a shotgun to their face in slow motion targetting mode.

maybe one of the vaults was kinda creepy, but i dont think there is anything in FO3 that should actualy be scary for anyone who fits its ESRB

The changes that would've taken place could of been an entire DLC! If the NCR or Legion takes over/moves out, the numerous factions do what they said they would do, and if you do or don't own The Vegas Strip! Besides most of the ancillary factions said they would move on or were killed, so it's not like most of them would have a huge appearance in game anyway! The after game could be more focused on taking care of your new-found assets! Or if you joined NCR or the Legion you could work to begin their establishment in the Mojave! They could've done something. It wouldn't be an entirely new game, just the next part of the story. If they try and release a New Vegas 2, I'm not entirely sure I would buy it, due to the fact that it could of been done in a simple DLC release. I'm just sayin'...

This, so much. Every time I encountered one of those, if they got too close to me, I would almost literally enter a pocket dimension inside the chair my head was pressing against. The little ones I didn't mind, the big ones though... *shudder*
And the Albino ones too... ugh. They fill me with a primal terror.

Mirelurk Hunters too. Fuck those guys.
They didn't get to me that much. I just kept thinking, "Crabs. Don't get the crabs. Kill the crabs." in rapid succession and it worked out fairly well anytime I met them.

The scariest thing about fallout 3 is that it's considered cannon.
You mean the scariest thing about Fallout 3 is rabid Fallout 1 and 2 fans :p
I started out with Fo3, but when I played the old ones I started hating Fo3, atleast the story. If it's enclave,BoS and changed weapons could go un-cannon itself I would love it =D

Fallout 3 scary? In... what point of view? Of course being scared of something is divined within each individuals mind, and as such it differs for all of us. But if you can play Amnesia with a straight face and clean underwear you will have no problem with Fallout 3

But then people would ***** there isn't enough content in the DLC. There is simply no way they could have made it so that all of your choices would be apparent and meaningful, not to mention that they would have to create four new major questlines and have to rehire old voice actors (Which is very hard for them to do) for each faction. Broken Steel was possible because in both of Fallout 3's endings, there was pretty much the same effect. The purifier was activated no matter what and the Brotherhood won. Even if you choose the evil one, it wasn't like the Enclave took over the wasteland, just a few dead NPC's lying around from the poisoned water. They would have to make a whole bunch of other dialogue for the New Vegas depending on whether or not Caesar died in New Vegas, or if the Legate was in charge. President Kimball may or may not be dead. Just way too many variables with the epilogues for them to make a decent, satisfying Broken Steel expansion.
