I don't lose faith in humanity when people do terrible things. I lose faith in that person and deem them worthy of punishment.

How is this humanity's fault exactly? What is with this overly dramatic 'losing faith in humanity' thing? Humanity's in a better state than it has been in years ethically anyway. A lot less slavery and child labor and the like. And you talk about puppies as if that defines humanity's ethical outlook.
This is exactly what I was thinking.

While I certainly don't endorse this behaviour, I don't see it as something that drastically alters ethics. Sure it's disgusting but there is a lot worse happening.

Welcome to 2010 buddy.
What was even worse was this senile old **** claimed to have fetched the same puppies out of the river and the news ran with it to try to calm everyone down. Only she was clearly full of shit since the puppies she showed were solid brown while the ones the young ***** threw in the river clearly had lots of white on them.

Personally I just hope they all die horrible, slow, painful deaths.

Anyway, I personally lose faith in humanity every time I hear someone "loosing" faith in humanity.

Whoo! Another thread to bookmark in my... "Over-dramatic 'I've lost faith in humanity' Escapist threads" folder!

Yeah, its a real bookmark folder, and its fucking huge.

OT: Shitty stuff happens. I don't think you should judge humanity based on a few people's actions. As somebody who hasn't thrown even a single puppy in a river, I am insulted that you have lost faith in me. For shame OP. For shame.

The term itself "Lost Faith in Humanity" means nothing anyway.

Lost your faith that Humanity what? That Humans are good, or kind, or gentle? I've faith in Humanity to act as Humanity does: In whatever way they feel they can get away with that makes them feel good.

You can't "Lose Faith in Humanity", that would mean you NO LONGER BELIEVE IN HUMANITY. Now, Humanity, when not attributed to another entity, can't be an abstract concept, so you meany you no longer believe in either the attitude of humans, or humans themselves. That's crazy, and you should probably seek help. If you've lost faith in Humanity's humanity, then you're a bit odd, since you define the abstract concept humanity, by something other than the attitude of Humanity.

So basically, you should say what you've lost faith in. I assume you mean Humanity's capacity for kindness, but I could just as easily insert, Humanity's Cruelty, and make you into a puppy hater.

Finally, as many have pointed out: One evil woman kills puppies. What does that say about Humanity, and why do you exclude yourself from your epiphet? Why does her killing puppies reflect badly on me, but not you (The lack of attack on self is implied by the statement, by saying I, you pass judgement, meaning you consider yourself morally superior). How does it reflect on anyone? We all come from a species that brought about Hitler, has made countless species extinct, and created Ke$ha. Why is this worse than any of those?

Now me, I'm a misanthropic asshole, but don't pretend you can get sympathy by acting all misanthropic and juvenile because you saw something that offended you. I'm a misanthrope because I dislike (most) people. You're playing at the misanthrope because you lack emotional depth.

The girl is so mentally disturbed/prone to psychopathic tendencies that she is most likely devoid of much humanity in the first place. People who violently kill animals at a young age frequently develop anti-social personality disorder. A lot of emerging studies indicate that their brains are wired up differenty than a typical human being. They cannot feel compassion or guilt in the same way a typical human being can. 50/50 odds if she isn't kept in treatment for the rest of her life, she will be out killing people soon enough.

a friend of mine found a video where a girl is throwing puppies into a river.

Live puppies...into a river. I've not seen the video(nor do I know where the thing is, but good lord...just...what mental state are you in to even do such a thing?

Sorry there's not much meat to this but I just need to get this out of my system because I am quite frankly appalled and dismayed by knowing about this... that there are humans out there who do this thing, I know there's bad people in the world but man, it just feels bad man.
In moments like this friend, I'd just suggest taking a deep breath and remembering it isn't all bad. From every good batch of humans you are bound to get one total nutter and unfortunately this nutter got hold of some puppies and a video camera.

Humanity is a lot better off than it has been. Just don't give up yet.

Also I suggest not watching those videos if they are going to make you feel bad - I stopped watching them ages ago because they made me feel the same as you are feeling now.

2 years ago is so old we cannot even discuss it anymore? It is disturbing? Absolutely, not everyone has spent the past decade on their computer reading every story. Terrible things happen, it sucks.

Humans are a confusing people, we've spent all our known existence fighting and killing, yet we can create amazing works of art and are capable of extraordinary acts of kindness. So the end question always ends up being, are we inherently good or evil? Both. We rely on diversity to survive. I personally still struggle with the idea that we have come this far, and that any of us have any clue at all what the hell is going on in a world we have known for such a short period of time. I feel that most people cope with this by staring at the ground no more than 2 feet in front of them.

That's obviously very messed up, but that's one person out of several billion. I think there are perfectly valid reasons to lack a faith in humanity, but when people say they've lost faith in humanity because of what one or a few people have done, I think they're lacking a proper perspective.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've heard 'lost faith in humanity'.

Yeah, the video, I remember it. The thread about it over a year ago on the Escapist got a huge amount of posts, probably made it at least ten pages. Doesn't bother me, because I'm not letting one person be the spokesperson and representative to the entirety of the human race.

Really? This is your breaking point? This is the thing you slap the "Not for the faint of heart" label on? Not that kid who would slam his cat against his bathroom walls and post it on youtube for sh*ts and giggles? Not that marine who had his buddies film him tossing a puppy overhand into a gorge? Not the woman from New York who put her friend's kitten in a microwave and killed it as a form of petty revenge? Hell, not even that one chinese nurse who would stomp little chicks and kittens to death in heels while filming it and selling it as fetish porn? Or what about those misguided vegan couples who've tried forcing their lifestyle on their children and ended up starving babies and toddlers to death? I'm not even going to get into the crazier sh*t we do to each other almost on a daily basis these days.

And besides, who are you to judge an entire species over 200,000 years old on one minute facet you've barely glimpsed at and probably got second or third hand? Are you recruiting for a political party? An end of days cult? When you lose enough faith in humanity, are you going to renounce your status as a human and live like an elk in the wild?

I am losing faith as well, are people really so thick that they decide that spelling and grammar are not important, in real life or on the internet? One of my favourite misspellings is "loose" for "lose". Is it so hard to simply not type/write one O?

I think these people lose their faith in humanity every time any human does something bad, and regain their faith in humanity every time any human does something good. It'd explain why we see so many "lose faith in humanity" threads...it's just a matter of people going through an endless cycle of losing and regaining faith.
That sounds awesome! I wish I could do that! Like an endless emotional rollercoaster! Forever jumping between dismay and shock, and awe and wonderment...! Youtube must be like the holy grail to these people!!! :p

OT: Ok... wow... thank you for this incredibly insignificant information! May I also bring your attention to the lady who put a cat in a bin, the london rioters, and the middle eastern dictators... such as President Assad! Actually scrap that... with that short sudden secalation in other dick moves you may have an aneurysm!

Maybe the puppies were happy and she was actually teaching them to swim. By tying them up in a hessian bag. No challenge to it otherwise.

On a more serious note, yes, this is terrible, but lets be honest, it could be worse. She could have been throwing human babies into a river.

That seems about right. I find it rather annoying. I wish people would stop trying to judge humanity as a whole, or if they did at least put things into perspective instead of looking at once incident at a time.
It has just become an overused saying, none of these people have any idea what it is actually like to lose faith in humanity, the people that do are extremely fucked up because of it.

I saw that video. All we can do is be upstanding and moral ourselves and not worry about these kinds of people, and punch them in the face if we do happen to see one. As much as I'd like that girl to die a horrible death, I haven't seen her before and probably never will, so I just keep up my end of the deal so I can point the finger when I need to and not be a hypocrite about it.
