I notice this more on console than PC, but it seems like the vast majority of FPS multiplayer is straight up team deathmatch. Do people lack the mental fortitude to do anything other than point and click at bad guys? I'm getting so incredibly sick of playing deathmatch.

I play almost exclusively on PC, but I occasionally play some Halo Reach. Tonight I was playing some Halo and played 13 Slayers in a row despite not being in a slayer playlist. Yes I could have gone to an objective only playlist, but there are only 1 or 2 of them and they are only 4v4 and they have almost no one in them. I wanted to play 8v8 CTF or anything other than slayer.

Every single time, Slayer gets at least 60% of the votes and we up playing it.

I just don't understand how these people can enjoy playing slayers exclusively. Especially when you have large maps, vehicles, and a couple of flags. Not to mention the bevy of other non slayer gametypes there are.

So why is this? 10 years ago it was all about the CTF and teamwork. Games today reward you for being selfish and sometimes even reward you for interfering with and/or stealing kills from your team-mate. I've yet to see regular pub team play on consoles. And on PCs it's only prevalent in some games like TF2.

I think because people see it as "If I go to get the flag I won't have any kills!" Nowadays.

The problem is exacerbated by the difficulty of coordinating with team mates you don't personally know.

I'd love to play games like Operation Flashpoint or Rainbow Six with people and actually be strategic. Sadly there is no way that's going to actually happen.

A better question to be asked would be "How do people enjoy multiplayer at all?"

I've played nearly 12,000 matches of Call of Duty 4, and of those, at least 10,000 of them were Team Deathmatch.

I do not share your disdain for the most basic (and fun) of the shooter gametypes.

Objectives in Halo are quite good though, since it's a more team-based game than CoD. I definitely enjoy CTF and Assault more than Slayer in Halo, particularly if I'm playing with friends. It can be a bit frustrating playing with random idiots in objective games.

"They have the flag going back side."
"Lol did you just see me no scope that fag lololol."

Indeed, good sir, 'tis a most potent source of frustration.

I don't play Halo MP unless it's split-screen, but I've certainly noticed this with CoD.

I personally crave objectives and purpose within a game beyond simply pulling the trigger, but when you're playing with idiots, it generally just turns into a death match anyway (Counter Strike, anyone?).

Everything is on some level deathmatch in most FPS's. In CTF, it's deathmatch until you get the enemy team to 3 or 4 down, then grabbing the falg and making a run for it. In Assault, it's deathmatch until you get the enemy team 3 or 4 down, then having the bomb guy waddle in and plant it.
A lot of people would just prefer their deathmatch as that- straight up deathmatch. Not deathmatch + some random objective, they logged on after their day of work or school is over and they want to unwind by just killing some people. That doesn't make them braindead, it just means they don't want to bother after a long day.

And besides-the-point, multi-flag ctf on Paradiso is just vain attempts to lone wolf the flag back to your base unless you have a team and they don't. Then the team that coordinates will annihilate the uncoordinated one.
Or maybe you've got two coordinated teams, then it's vain team-based attempts to get the flag back due to the map's geometry. Trying to make any progress on a map that allows three routes to the flag and allots each side a tank every three minutes and a sniper every two is like pulling teeth.

Not so sure about PC, but have you ever tried to get people to work as a team on the Xbox?

Yeah, it typically ends up with either "but that'll ruin my K/D ratio!" or "Lol, *insert random insult, common ones include: retard, fag, etc.* your a noob for trying to tell me what to do!" *watches them get shot five seconds later*

People have no sense of teamwork, or cooperation nowadays except on certain games like NWN...

I think part of the problem lies in "metagame" scoring systems like KD ratios/Ranks/XP/cR/Hats/etc. Most of the time these mechanics reward players based on the number of opponents they kill rather than practicing good teamwork and accomplishing objectives. This causes many players to adopt a "bodycount is all that matters" mentality, even to the point that it negatively affects objective-based game modes. They don't care if they let their team down as long as they get the most kills.

Naw, the best modes in Reach are Invasion, Infection, Team Swat and Grifball. Any one of those is a million times better than plain slayer :p

This. I don't mind multiplayer, but sometimes a good singleplayer is more enjoyable. Mostly because you can immerse yourself in the world to whatever extent you choose.

OT: I don't mind Slayer Dethmatch, let me guess. You played an extreme amount of Elite Slayer right? It just wasn't your day man, I was "forced" to play Elite Slayer four times in a row and I hate it!

Yeah I know what you mean. I was playing Capture the Flag on Black Ops and I swear I was the only one bothering to get the flag. All my teammates were just running around randomly doing nothing important.

What annoys me is people who go into objective modes and still just care about kills. Search and Destroy in MW2 is basically unplayable now as all I ever find is a bunch of quickscopers camping out their spawns, even when the bomb has been planted, or the bomb carrier is also one of the campers and does not move the entire game.
