Well if anyone here read my last topic then these are the results. For those of you who didn't I got the Valve Collection on Steam. While deciding which one to use first a fear was in my mind. A fear involving my gaming preference verses Yahtzee's. So far due to his complimenting of Deus Ex, the Prince of Persia trilogy, and Portal I have either bought of played all of these. I found the 2 Deus Ex games on steal on sale for 5$ total, found the Prince of Persia games used at Gamestop, and Portal was free on steam for a short time due to the release of steam on macs. I hated all of these.
First on my personal chopping block is Deus Ex. One of the main things I've heard about Deus Ex is that you could play it any way you wanted. Within about 1 and a half minutes this was proven wrong. While not particularly "guns blazing" I tried using my gun to shoot hostiles until this was proven to be a horrendous idea very soon a few times over. So after a very long time (couple of months) I played again but tried stealth, something I take no joy in. After some time I was inside of...I had no idea what I was doing. Then because machine gun turrets don't have to worry about sound when there are cameras around I got turned into fleshy swiss cheese. Not to mention some complaints with the ranks (if I have the 2nd highest rank in rifles, a sniper rifle should not be swinging like I just drank a whole bottle of Grey Goose) along with the stupid stun baton which failed to work most of the time. Thankfully I only payed 5$ for it but I still didn't have an amount of fun equal to the amount of money put in.
Next is the Prince of Persia Trilogy. For a short time it was not that bad to me. Then came some incredibly unclear platform rooms and puzzles where someone kept screaming something along the line of "what are you doing!?" with each move I made. I have no idea why I actually kept them. They were about 40$ for all of them and I did have SOME fun which is more then I would ever say for Deus Ex.
Now finally Portal. First off while this gave me no enjoyment whatsoever it never irritated me (once again something putting it about Deus Ex) and I could easily see the amount of quality in the game. Unfortunately it still wasn't even fun for me but this one is probably the most understandable for me since I don't care much for intense brain activity during a video game. Since it was free for a time I didn't lose anything so I am most forgiving to Portal.
I will be willing to admit since I never finished any of them I can't honestly say any of them are bad but I wouldn't anyway. Prince of Persia got infuriating but was still some amount of fun. Portal was no fun but gave no irritation. Even Deus Ex, my most hated game of these, would still fun to somebody with a different mindset. None of these were my type of game plain and simple. But all of these were of very high esteem in Yahtzee's eyes which is why I got them. This experience let me to believe they our tastes in games are on opposite sides.
But for some reason I still asked for the Valve Collection. I figured the best course of action would be to start with the original Half Life since even if I didn't like it too well there would still be more games with many improvements since then. Unfortunately I do not feel like trying since Half Life might be my most hated game in existence right now. The controls were insanely loose with no apparent way to fix that and putting that in a game needing precision platforming is horrible. Then there were some stupidly unclear moments when I was wandering around aimlessly due to being clueless. The final nail was some weird tentacle monster which after dying about 30-40 times I finally gave up.
Right now I have uninstalled Half life and all its expansions and have no desire to try any of the other games. I suppose I put this up for 2 reasons.
1: to see what people's opinions on my massive disliking of highly acclaimed games with heavily devoted fanbases.
2: to see if anyone else has had any experiences where knowing this probably being a bad idea went ahead with it anyway and was fooled again.
I apologize for the length and if it sounds like some whiny kid complaining because he's not good at games.
EDIT: Ok someone made an interesting point about putting what I like then someone else made a point about asking for something I know I'll like so first off is that I actually did ask for stuff I knew I would like except for this but I asked for a reason. Everything I had heard about their games was that they were all good in some form or another and the Half Life games actually looked good. I only asked for this because of the sale and I did want to see what they were like.
Also for genres I like :first person shooters, third person shooters, some real time strategy games, RPGs, hack and slash, action/adventure, and some platformers (its been a while since I actually played one). Looking through these mostly says that I should have liked those games but I didn't. So just to have this straightened out, I was pretty sure that I was going to like them regardless of that whole Yahtzee thing I went on about. If this isn't clear enough then I'll try to add more detail later if requested.
EDIT 2: Ok more info requested. Some of you have been asking what GAMES directly I like so I'll try to throw out some of my favorites. In the RTS genre some personal favorites would be Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2. I'll throw out I haven't played every RTS in existence and while Starcraft 2 sits right next to me as I type this I don't have the specs to play it well. For some FPSs I did enjoy Halo a long time ago but now I don't play it a lot and a current favorite is Killzone 2 then Battlefield Bad Company 2 but I still havent jumped into the multiplayer of either and I have never played a Call of Duty game. For RPGs Mass effect 2, Tales of Symphonia, and Demon's Souls are both very high up there along with the amazing Ys series and currently Fallout New Vegas. In the Hack and Slash genre there would be God of War (any of them) and Castlevania Lords of Shadow. I also like the Megaman Battle Network series, Sword of Mana, 3D dot Game Heroes, Jade Empire and the Kingdom Under Fire games. Hope this helps out and if I still need to post more (I feel more sorry for new readers with each word) then let me know.
