Well if anyone here read my last topic then these are the results. For those of you who didn't I got the Valve Collection on Steam. While deciding which one to use first a fear was in my mind. A fear involving my gaming preference verses Yahtzee's. So far due to his complimenting of Deus Ex, the Prince of Persia trilogy, and Portal I have either bought of played all of these. I found the 2 Deus Ex games on steal on sale for 5$ total, found the Prince of Persia games used at Gamestop, and Portal was free on steam for a short time due to the release of steam on macs. I hated all of these.

First on my personal chopping block is Deus Ex. One of the main things I've heard about Deus Ex is that you could play it any way you wanted. Within about 1 and a half minutes this was proven wrong. While not particularly "guns blazing" I tried using my gun to shoot hostiles until this was proven to be a horrendous idea very soon a few times over. So after a very long time (couple of months) I played again but tried stealth, something I take no joy in. After some time I was inside of...I had no idea what I was doing. Then because machine gun turrets don't have to worry about sound when there are cameras around I got turned into fleshy swiss cheese. Not to mention some complaints with the ranks (if I have the 2nd highest rank in rifles, a sniper rifle should not be swinging like I just drank a whole bottle of Grey Goose) along with the stupid stun baton which failed to work most of the time. Thankfully I only payed 5$ for it but I still didn't have an amount of fun equal to the amount of money put in.

Next is the Prince of Persia Trilogy. For a short time it was not that bad to me. Then came some incredibly unclear platform rooms and puzzles where someone kept screaming something along the line of "what are you doing!?" with each move I made. I have no idea why I actually kept them. They were about 40$ for all of them and I did have SOME fun which is more then I would ever say for Deus Ex.

Now finally Portal. First off while this gave me no enjoyment whatsoever it never irritated me (once again something putting it about Deus Ex) and I could easily see the amount of quality in the game. Unfortunately it still wasn't even fun for me but this one is probably the most understandable for me since I don't care much for intense brain activity during a video game. Since it was free for a time I didn't lose anything so I am most forgiving to Portal.

I will be willing to admit since I never finished any of them I can't honestly say any of them are bad but I wouldn't anyway. Prince of Persia got infuriating but was still some amount of fun. Portal was no fun but gave no irritation. Even Deus Ex, my most hated game of these, would still fun to somebody with a different mindset. None of these were my type of game plain and simple. But all of these were of very high esteem in Yahtzee's eyes which is why I got them. This experience let me to believe they our tastes in games are on opposite sides.

But for some reason I still asked for the Valve Collection. I figured the best course of action would be to start with the original Half Life since even if I didn't like it too well there would still be more games with many improvements since then. Unfortunately I do not feel like trying since Half Life might be my most hated game in existence right now. The controls were insanely loose with no apparent way to fix that and putting that in a game needing precision platforming is horrible. Then there were some stupidly unclear moments when I was wandering around aimlessly due to being clueless. The final nail was some weird tentacle monster which after dying about 30-40 times I finally gave up.

Right now I have uninstalled Half life and all its expansions and have no desire to try any of the other games. I suppose I put this up for 2 reasons.

1: to see what people's opinions on my massive disliking of highly acclaimed games with heavily devoted fanbases.
2: to see if anyone else has had any experiences where knowing this probably being a bad idea went ahead with it anyway and was fooled again.

I apologize for the length and if it sounds like some whiny kid complaining because he's not good at games.

EDIT: Ok someone made an interesting point about putting what I like then someone else made a point about asking for something I know I'll like so first off is that I actually did ask for stuff I knew I would like except for this but I asked for a reason. Everything I had heard about their games was that they were all good in some form or another and the Half Life games actually looked good. I only asked for this because of the sale and I did want to see what they were like.
Also for genres I like :first person shooters, third person shooters, some real time strategy games, RPGs, hack and slash, action/adventure, and some platformers (its been a while since I actually played one). Looking through these mostly says that I should have liked those games but I didn't. So just to have this straightened out, I was pretty sure that I was going to like them regardless of that whole Yahtzee thing I went on about. If this isn't clear enough then I'll try to add more detail later if requested.

EDIT 2: Ok more info requested. Some of you have been asking what GAMES directly I like so I'll try to throw out some of my favorites. In the RTS genre some personal favorites would be Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2. I'll throw out I haven't played every RTS in existence and while Starcraft 2 sits right next to me as I type this I don't have the specs to play it well. For some FPSs I did enjoy Halo a long time ago but now I don't play it a lot and a current favorite is Killzone 2 then Battlefield Bad Company 2 but I still havent jumped into the multiplayer of either and I have never played a Call of Duty game. For RPGs Mass effect 2, Tales of Symphonia, and Demon's Souls are both very high up there along with the amazing Ys series and currently Fallout New Vegas. In the Hack and Slash genre there would be God of War (any of them) and Castlevania Lords of Shadow. I also like the Megaman Battle Network series, Sword of Mana, 3D dot Game Heroes, Jade Empire and the Kingdom Under Fire games. Hope this helps out and if I still need to post more (I feel more sorry for new readers with each word) then let me know.

Y'know, before taking someone else's word for what you might like, you should tell them what sort of stuff you DO like.

This is more common than you might think. Older games that see widespread praise are often enjoyed on equal parts nostalgia and legitimate strengths. Even putting that aside, they're fairly particular games, and by no means perfect for each and every player. Different strokes for different folks.

In regards to the other question, Superman Returns. I knew there was no way it would be a good game. Superman's gaming track record is notoriously bad as it is; making a movie game based off the cursed franchise seemed like an endeavor that was doomed to failure before it ever got off the ground. Nevertheless, I'm a diehard Superman fanboy. I knew I had to play it. I kept telling myself that after the disaster that was Superman 64, no developer worth his salt could possibly get it wrong. I was fooling myself, of course. The game was an absolute mess. Flying at superspeed was kind of fun, though.

Different People have different tastes. Sometimes critically acclaimed games just aren't your thing (a perfect example would be the Halo games they all average above 90% in meta critic but every time one comes out there are about a bazillion "Halo is stupid, overrated and gay" threads.) Don't play games because someone else tells you they are good play them because you want to.

Ninja'd.

OT: Ya, no offence intended, but you should give a little more thought into what you ask for as a gift. I try only to ask for stuff I know I'll love, or stuff I'm going to get regardless. I waste less money, and my friends don't have to hear me whine about the terrible games they buy me ;)

Not really sure what you want us to say, but... Oh well, try my best.

It can be a bit annoying sometimes when everybody else loves a game and you can't for the life of you figure out why. I've had that experience with several games over the years (GTA4, Halo etc. to name some recent ones). Or when I love a game and nobody else seems to like it or even know about it.

I can say that I absolutely loved Portal and it was the only game of this generation that truly impressed me (until MGS4 came along with the new PS3 for Christmas yesterday, cha-ching).

Deus Ex I played when I was younger and had a lot of trouble with, but I have been wanting to play it again recently and do it properly.

I thought Sands of Time was great but got a bit bored with it after awhile, I didn't care much for the parts I played of the 2 sequels.

Half Life 1 and 2 were some of the best FPS games I'd ever played and were completely unique at the time I played them.

EDIT: Also, about the Yahtzee aspect. I absolutely love his videos and love his bar, he's there for comedy more than a serious critical analysis of the game. I can't understand the people that take his opinion as law for passing up games that they might have really enjoyed. Decide what you want to play.

All that man is good for is comedy. Learn that, then come back.

As for the games you picked, Deus Ex is the worst game I've played in a long time (right up there with Fallout 1&2, TES IV: Oblivion, and a few others), and I feel your pain. $10 down the fucking drain right there.
I actually fully realize that but it was in how he described them is what interested me. Also I had already heard good things about them anyway but he put them in the most detail. I'm not disagreeing with you but it was a little more complex than me being a mindless drone that buys what he says to buy(not implying that's what you meant. Sorry if it sounds like it)

Why don't you people look up what sort of games you are buying, if you don't like the genre don't buy it for christ sake.

OP: So what games do you like?
And more importantly, why?

If you can't get them to work properly, then I'd say that's a problem on your end, seeing as how they work just fine on my computer.

Also, I'm aware of the rules, thanks.

You forgot to quote. Also, my guess is that Ephraim J. Witchwood is either using Windows 7 or a Mac. Fallout 1 & 2 don't work on those. I know from first-hand experience.

Heh. Reading the OP is like having a man born without eyes tell me sunsets are overrated.

I feel sorry for you.

Actually, wait a second...

Ah. And that would be the problem right there. Those are all games that require at least a little bit of thought. Not much, but a bit.

Oh well. Go play Call of Duty 7. You'll love it.

Okay, I just spent the last 20 minutes digging out my Fallout CD and reinstalling, only to discover that it works fine on my Win7 PC, without any patches, either.

All I had to do was enable some compatibility options and kill explorer.exe

You're entitled to your opinion and all, and you shouldn't follow someone else's opinion on what games are good if you don't think you'll enjoy them, demos are designed for that reason.
However, with that having been said, that has to be the stupidest reason to dislike a game/set of games I've ever read, purely because I don't know what else exactly you were expecting from Portal.

It's a matter of preference. I just hope no devs read this and think "hey, let's make all games not like in his list!" Because a lot of people enjoyed them. I must say Fallout 1&2 should not be touched, as it's the beginning of a great atmosphere. Probably same for Half Life. Portal was just hit or miss.

Blah blah blah...

Have you played Mass Effect? Left 4 Dead? I don't care what others think, really. But these are pretty much the only games I play, and, seeing your opinion on the games you were disappointed in, knowing the opinion on these is just interesting.

(and I even agree with you to some extent - those games are old and too slow for today or are just not the game I'd play; still, I consider some of them great, yet not my taste)

This is actually a huge reason to go into console gaming: rentals!

I've got a video store with great deals a couple blocks down the street, and I love renting from there. It helps me sift through what I actually like from what sounds interesting, but doesn't work for me.

Example: in Yahtzee's review of No More Heroes, he mentions that he loved Killer7. This piques my curiosity, so I rent it, and learn that I'm not very compatible with it. Oh, well, lost a buck for that rental, on to the next one.

And I totally predicted his reaction to NMH2. Hilariously enough, it was equivalent to my own!

Well, old games also have one other thing about them.
They're not shy about ramming something up your bum with how brutal they can be.

As much as I disagree with some of the "games" around nowadays, where it's pretty much "press A not to die," there's gotta be some sort of medium.

Like an Insanity difficulty mode for people who think Battletoads is but a minor challenge.
