Here's the game-by-game rundown:

Deus Ex: Yeah it's shit. Whatevs it came out a billion years ago.

Prince of Persia: Sounds like thinking isn't one of your strong suits.

Protal: I guess I was right. Good job buying a puzzle game and expecting to like it.

Half-Life: Hey bro, Half-Life was released in 1998. All first person shooters controlled like that back then. [/common knowledge]

I didn't say Deus Ex was shit I said I didn't like it. The thinking part of Prince of Persia isn't what stopped me from completing one of the puzzles it was some guy screaming at me the entire time with every move I made. Also I said I didn't buy Portal it was free for a time and I didn't expect anything but it was there so I tried it. Finally I was born in 1993 so I don't know a lot about old games and the first one I played was Halo.

Heh. Reading the OP is like having a man born without eyes tell me sunsets are overrated.
Also I don't get the "having a man born without eyes tell me sunsets are overrated" comment. No need to explain if you don't want to but I really don't understand it.
Sunsets are pretty. But a man with no eyes would not understand how pretty they are because he can't see them. If that man were to then turn around and tell me that sunsets suck I would not take his comments particularly seriously. And I would feel a bit sorry for him.

Portal, Half Life, Sands of Time and Deus Ex are all good games. You do not understand how good they are because you don't have the required capacity for "intense brain activity". (Which strikes me as a bit odd. You seem intelligent enough to me.) So when you say that those games suck I cannot take your comments particularly seriously. And I feel a bit sorry for you.

See?

Although you are being very reasonable about it. Now I feel like a dick for making condescending analogies.

I personally enjoyed all of those games, and agree with Yahtzee in that they're of the highest quality. That said, not everyone is going to enjoy them.

People's minds work in different ways. To me, it sounds like you'd be more at home in a more 'mindless' variety of games that doesn't need much creative thought, such as most modern shooters or action games. I know that might come off as an insult, but that's not how I intend it.

I'd like to give the example of the indie game Hazard: A Journey of Life. The whole point of that game is to show how different people have different thought patterns, by having blatantly obvious solutions to puzzles that some people pick up on right away, but others will struggle to determine. Games like Prince of Persia, Portal and Deus Ex play out naturally to me and have a notable pay-off psychologically. If you found them hard to understand or play and were more annoyed than satisfied by them, then they're likely just not catering to your psychological needs.

It's pretty much the same situation where a lot of 'hardcore' players of CoD games would hate games like the original Diablo. It's not that the game's bad, it's just not one that satisfies them, and is therefore not one that they can tolerate.

I mentioned the final nail in that coffin was when I tried stealth but was caught by an unavoidable sentry turret ...
It is by no means unavoidable.
I mean, you can climb boxes around the back to get past it.
You could also take notice of which way the cameras are pointing and not go into their field of view.
Or you could cut the power and completely nullify it.
My favourite though is to reprogram it to target your enemies.

I'm glad you liked my response.

Ah yes OP I did read what genres you like, but I'm curious as to exactly which GAMES you enjoyed? Not genres. If we have a clearer idea of what titles you like then we can probably work out what you didn't like about half life, portal, etc.

I think I can understand your problem with half life 1 and 2, they are both very linear first person shooters and quite old, some games by today are way more fun than those old titles.
Portal I can understand too as puzzles just don't seem to be your thing.
I never played deus ex though (I understand it is quite old as well so that explains again why it sucks by today's standards)

I think you just want a game that's a bit more sophisticated than the linear run-and-gun of the half life series, yet not so far that it becomes a puzzle game.

Maybe you have seen what awesomeness games of today have to offer and because of that there just doesn't seem to be anything that great about those old titles.

Sorry about that but I don't think I ever said that they sucked I just said why I didn't like them. I would actually agree that all of those (except maybe Half Life) were great games and just not for me at that time. Also thank you for explaining that.
