Yeah, generally the words "I'm not a racist, but" are a good warning sign that the person is horribly racist.

No it's not. Discrimination isn't a negative thing per definition, it just means being able to see differences. There's no inherent positive or negative judgement in its definition.

Aw. I though this was about strange-sounding accents. I can't believe people talk like stereotypical rednecks, if that counts.

i dunno just ranting. still mad for being called a racist because i have hearing issues
Don't worry, everybody's a racist. Even the act of calling someone a racist is based in racism. The problem isn't that, it's discrimination that's the real, tangible issue. People look into racist words too often and too much, but they also turn a blind eye to outright discrimination with the same frequency, which is what's really wrong
thanks for the cheer up

right so he's not racist. but he is opposed to playing as one race... he's incredibly stupid, homophobic and racist.
This, racism + homophobia... might want to add sexist in there to be well rounded.... and tall people.

OT: There's people who hate for all manner of reasons, unfortunately this guy picked two that people don't get to choose, maybe he'll realise that and start on abortion, or divorce or something. He'd be hating on something regardless.

I was just checking out the heller vs mercer dev diary(Prototype 2) over at Gametrailers, when i came across this comment by a user
"play a ni**er? srsly im not a racist but its gay to play someone who isnt white.' I was shocked and out of words, i just could not believe that there are people who hold such opinions, heck i didn't even think stuff like that was an issue at all. He's making a big deal just cause the main character is not white? Pls i'm not trying to start a race war but i just wanted to know what you guys think
Dominican adopted and raised in Trenton by 2 white parents.
Yeah people think like that. Doesn't even bother me beyond pity.

Really? If this shocks you, then you really need to leave your bubble and see the world.
There are places in Africa where they still lynch homosexuals, places in Mexico where rape of 7-11 yr old girls is fine, and places in America where not supporting the local labor Unions will get you beaten down.
People are stupid, arrogant, corrupt, selfish, violent, and irrational creatures by nature. WITHOUT EXCEPTION! (That includes you, and me, and every person rationally commenting on this board)
In my time on mission trips, I've found that the very worst offenders are often the people who consider themselves the most sane and rational. All people are like this inside, some consciously choose to not surrender to their corrupt human nature, but most let it guide them. Offer anonymity to people who are just barely staying civilized to begin with and people like your commenter should NEVER surprise you.

*Side rant: The people who say "Well its 2011! How can people still think (insert nonprogressive idea here)!", I believe are the most clueless people on the planet. Humans have been around for 20,000 years.
It takes a staggeringly arrogant society to believe that thousands of years of instinctive racism, sexism, or anti-homosexuality can simply be turned off becasue people wish those things didn't exist anymore.

I have this radical idea: that what the modern progressive western world calls eliminating: sexism, racism, and homophobia, is not the elimination of anything.
The real results I see developing are the CREATION of anti-white racism, anti-male sexism, and heterophobia. I think those progressive-minded people are every bit as evil and stupid as their counterparts.

*end side rant

...The exception, for me, is when I say "with all due respect." Whenever I say that to someone, what I mean is that my following statement is going to reflect how much respect you deserve, which is probably not much.
Word, I also carry this, but moderate my tone depending on how hostile I wish to appear.

Also, "I'm not racist but..." = Best preface to a horribly out-of-touch statement... EVAR!

Also Also, the casual tossing around of 'gay' as a term meaning 'bad' seems to have been drilled into every school child of my generation. I'm not one of them gaymophobes, but I do have a tendency to catch myself occasionally saying it to this day. It's most frustrating, because a word used like that really loses it's meaning after that kinda usage, because there wasn't really a sexual connotation when I was a primary schooler, shit, a lad could be called 'gay' for giving flowers to a girl, y'know? Just some background of where that usage sits in my mind. I think the closest equivalent would be 'sappy.'

Sure it may be an insensitive term, but context has a phenomenal amount of importance with language.

I guess what I'm saying is that I wish rather than getting everybody in the world all het-up about their sensitivities [I'm looking at you, GLAAD], I would rather people on the whole were less sensitive about being offended. Nobody has the right to go through life without having their views challenged, nobody has the right to live life without ever being offended.

All my opinion, not intended to be inflammatory or in anyway derogatory to our proud soldiers in the fight against overpopulation. and to anyone who reads between the lines here looking for a hate-filled agenda, grow a fucking brain, yeah? I'm just having a vent about over-sensitivity, citing homophobic slurs as one particular example. This doesn't mean that I don't make a conscious effort to be considerate of those around me, because frankly I wish that everyone could be a bit more considerate, it would certainly help balance out all the irate offended people all over the world.

Wow, they nailed the trifecta: there's the obvious one of just being a racist douche, but they also preceded it with "I'm not a racist" (despite the massive evidence to the contrary), and they casually used 'gay' as an insult, which just makes no sense.

Here in the US, we're particularly sensitive about racism rearing its ugly head, as we thought we had tamed that monster[footnote]More so than much of the rest of the free world, at least.[/footnote], until Obama became President, and all the prejudices rose to the surface like rotted beans.[footnote]My favorite is the sentiment of the urban Midwest and South, the complaint that Obama, while Christian, is the wrong kind of Christian [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_church].[/footnote] It has even become a point of observation that within the conservative sect that if, after two-plus years of service, Obama's critics continue to focus on his non-whiteness (and then his alleged non-American birth and his alleged ties with Islam), as opposed to failed policy-making, they're not going to do well against him in 2012. But I digress.

The truth is, racism just isn't going to die in human culture in this epoch, since we instinctively band ourselves into small groups that look and smell like us, worship the same gods and otherwise understand things the way we do. Some of us are able to shed this drive to segregate in recognition that larger civilizations provide for faster advancements and better technologies. Many, however, don't, whether they are just that hard wired, or are sheltered by province or affluence to fail to develop perspective. This is why US conservatives praise "folksy, small-town" people, who are more susceptible to their appeals to these prejudices.

In the Left 4 Dead series, especially L4D2 which features two African American survivors, we get more than a few players who take offense to playing Coach, Rochelle or Louis[footnote]This is not counting the numerous black-dude-dies-first [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlackDudeDiesFirst] comments which are encouraged by Louis' unshakable optimism.[/footnote], or will mistreat other players playing them. It happens about as often as those who complain about playing Zoey or Rochelle, necessitating them being the girl. Generally, though, zombie hordes[footnote]And the AI director that launches them[/footnote] are completely unforgiving about personal social issues, just as they are about greed, rebelliousness and lack of solidarity with one's team, so such players tend to get satisfactorily eaten rather quickly.

And gay continues to be used as a generic disparagement, completely unrelated to its associations to homosexuality. Interestingly, I rarely see anyone comment one way or the other in game regarding the (somewhat intentional) ho yay [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HoYay] between Ellis and Nick, less so (but still conspicuous) between Francis and Louis, and the obvious crush that Ellis sometimes exhibits on Francis in The Passing.[footnote]That is, when he's not gushing over Zoey.[/footnote]

It's Gametrailers. The place doesn't really attract intellectuals-quite the opposite, in fact.
