Hello again Escapist. Some of you may remember me, some of you may not. But that's not really relevant, I guess. What is relevant, as you may have guessed from the title, is that I'm not able to use my right hand for 3 months (very severe cut on the fingers, and some hardcore surgery to fix it). Not even allowed to move my index finger.

So, I ask, what's the best way to pass this time without being able to use a console controller or mouse?

I was thinking about buying DS games and then using an emulator copy, so I could play one-handed. Any words on the legality of this?

Legal? Umm... yes, if you own it.

If Nintendo goes after you, well... lets just say that isn't the best PR.

Though, during this time, you could try learning to use your left hand.

In case this situation happens again.

Back in the day when arcades were still around there was this guy who played Tekken Tag. He only had one arm (lost his right arm in a motorcycle accident), yet he was just as good at the game as anyone who played it. He used his fingers of the left hand for the buttons and used the inside/outside of his wrist to manipulate the joystick...

Point being, I'm sure there's plenty of games you can still play with only one hand; most puzzle games on PC only require a mouse, you can play a fair share of RPGs with only a mouse too.

You could, you know, use your other hand.
Or find something else to do. Its not like gaming is a necessity.

Dude you have got the a good chance of pulling the old "take pity on me" to get laid, loads!!!

If your not into tha,t i suggest alot of film watching. The more you get into it the more obscure films you tend to find out about and like. I'm a massive film fan and willing to give anything a chance.

My suggestions
Horror: [REC] 1 and 2
Marial Arts : Chocolate (its a Tiwanise film? Its superb)
Gangster: Mesrine (its french and pure awsome)

Thats the more "might not know category" but i can suggest alot more mainstreem films too.

Turn based RPGs. Take all the time you need on the,

I configured my FF7 layout to be completely played left handed. An FYI if that helps.

I wouldn't necessarily give up gaming. I had to do that for boot camp and I started hallucinating. True story.

Most non FPS games on Pc would be a option, allthough hotkeyuse would be defficult.
Having cut of 3 fingers on the left hand a while back i know.

Regarding the DS legallity issue im not sure. But my guess would be that the copy you play have to be an actual copy of an owned product for it not to be illigal. Im just guessing here.

It's really not a big deal, gaming is just a way to pass time and there are many substitutes :3

Though I have to say... you don't need your index fingers to use a gamepad.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
you could probably play pc games, you can either use your middle finger on the mouse or get a track ball or something so its easier

You can use the mouse left-handed... even if you are right-handed. (Hey left-handed people use right handed mice all the time). Being left-handed I can use the mouse equally well in either hand.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

If you really want game then learn to use your mouse with your left hand. Or play dance games so you wont need your hands.

Although taking a break from gaming would be an option too, right?

Not sure I can recommend you anything that hasn't been said. Turn Based RPG/Strategy game is perfect. I just wouldn't expect you to play the game in your avatar. If you could, that's hardcore.

How about the Kinect? Pahaaa... but seriously I would just watch movies and let myself heal. Or go out and tell random chicks that you sliced your hand saving a bunch of puppies from a saw mill and all of that happened.
By the way how did you actually slice it?

Get yourself a copy of the Witcher, you can play it one handed and it's pretty cheap these days. I bought a copy yesterday for $19.95 AUS.
