Children of Bodom, listen to both their early and later work. They often change style in their albums. If you want melody, listen to Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper. If you want a more death metal sound, listen to Hate Crew Deathroll or Blooddrunk. If you want a lot of melody, listen to Something Wild (listen to the songs Lake Bodom, and Silent Night, Bodom Night, them being the best songs on that album). Personally my favorites are Hatebreeder and Hate Crew Deathroll.

I like the Jazz Metal youtube link. Awesome stuff, would love to hear more of that.

I would recommend:
Deathstars
(Sounds like Sisters of Mercy, only more metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly-jMFFjIbM&feature=PlayList&p=BE73E04A324DEF8F&index=0&playnext=1)

Lamb of God
(Amiercan Metal at its best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NvntVb0Q_o)

Scar Symmetry
(I love the mix of clean and growl vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX0p7Y3gND4)

Arch Enemy
(The Madonna of Metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9AcG0glVu4)

In Flames (Melodic death metal from Sweden)
Rammstein (German industrial metal)
Gamma Ray (British power metal)
Deathstars (Death metal)
Board of Osiris (Death metal)
Sonata Artica (Power metal)
Korpiklanni (Finnish folk hard metal)
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE (Japanese metal)

I saw a lot of American bands being thrown out, so I thought I would chuck out some more international artists to see what you think. I recommend ALL of them.

I like your taste in music, my favourite bands at the moment are Deathstars and In Flames.

I have a few recomendations:
Evile
God Forbid
Disturbed (might not be classed as metal, i dunno)
Pantera (I'm not sure if theyre power metal)

I can't believe nobody has listed Anaal Nathrakh. Shame on your souls.

Best songs:
Virus Bomb
The Final Absolution
Anaal Nathrakh
Until The World Stops Turning
Shatter The Empyrean
When Fire Rains Down From The Sky
Lama Sabachthani
Do Not Speak
When Humanity Is Cancer
The Yellow King
Genesis Of The Antichrist
When The Lion Devours Both Dragon And Child

All their stuff is fucking excellent, but this is the best by far.

Also, FinnTroll and Rammstein, try them. They are also quite excellent.

You may want to try Probot. It's just a project of Dave Grohl (i think that's his name), with various legends of the genre like Lemmy Kilmister, Max Cavalera or Cronos of Venom. Also, try some old Sepultura before Max Cavalera left.

All That Remains might be worth your time to look at.
I dunno their latest album was terrible (or at least compared to fall of ideals)
I thought the opposite. There were only a few songs I enjoyed in The Fall of Ideals. It just seemed to me that in Overcome, they tried matching the vocals with the music a little more.

Aww I thought this was a thread regarding types of metal, not music, for the record Steel is nice.
Personally, I prefer mercury. Nothing beats a metal that's liquid at room temperature and can give you a case of the barking mads.

Its PIRATE metal! You can't NOT love it!

Skindred (Reggae style) and Turisas (Vikings!) are another two.

I'm not really a metalhead, more a punk, but I have to enjoy amazing things:

Devin Townsend and/or Strapping Young Lad and associated projects. Wiki 'em. Very good stuff, especially if you're looking for more alternative stuff.
I've never heard of Devin Townsend, I'll have to check them out. I have heard of SYL and I'm ashamed to not own any of their music. Are there any must-have albums I should know about?
Devin Townsend is the genius behind SYL - he is the Strapping Young Lad, effectively. SYL's his heavy, ragey stuff. The Devin Townsend Band is his more experimental stuff. My favourite albums of his are "Biomech" (also sold under the name "Ocean Machine"), "Infinity", and "Accelerated Evolution". "Synchestra" is probably his most mature, musically speaking, and "Ziltoid the Omniscient" is a comedy-concept album about an alien who comes to Earth to steal coffee.

On the SYL side, I don't know so much, but "Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing" is pretty good.

staind would be grunge my friend. good grunge, but grunge none the less,no?
Well, that's why I said it's the CLOSEST thing to metal that I'll listen to.
