I have been quite proud of quite a few things, only to move on to that next step and find that the thing I was proud of was really nothing at all to anyone else around me. Such is my life. I think I'm doing something great to learn later that it was nothing great at all.
See, you actually said two things here:
That you did something that you were proud of that nobody around you thought was anything.
And
That you think you did something great that wasn't great at all.
These are very different things.
The second one we all have done. Like taking a huge crap.
'Man!' you might say 'Take a look at that huge crap! It's the biggest ever!'
And then your friend comes along and says 'Bah! I took one WAY bigger then that!'
When you say the crap is huge, you're measuring it against all other craps, thus validating others opinions.
But the first one isn't to be dismissed.
Take, for instance, overcoming an addiction that nobody around you has.
Or passing a test that you in particular had trouble with.
In those instances, nobody else is involved but you. You aren't comparing addictions, or test scores with people who passed the test. You're just happy, and dare I say 'proud', of the fact that you over came an obstacle in your life. Whether it's a big thing, like an addiction, or a small thing, like that darn midterm in that class you've been suffering in all year, it was yours and yours alone to beat, and
you beat it.
So even if some other girl in the class got 98% on the mid term, or nobody around even got into drugs or cigarettes or alcohol to begin with, that's not the point. The point is: You passed. You beat the addiction. Or whatever else the obstacle was. It's a victory that is yours, and yours alone, to own.
So I wouldn't be quick to dismiss things you've done.
Sometimes it's not about comparing to others. It's just about overcoming your obstacles. Great or small.
OT: For me it would be graduating college on the Dean's list, getting my first radio job, and every anniversary that I have celebrated with my wife (2 so far! 3 in May!).
