Solving the final Subject 16 puzzle on AC:Bro

The numbers wheel was a hell of a task, twas about midnight I was tired tearing my skin off trying to understand the clue given, then by some miracle I worked out the formula, roughly I'll add but goddamn it I did it.

LOL.. im sorry, but the title of the thread and the nature of how many "relationship" threads written by high school kids on the forums led me to believe this was a proclamation of lost virginity.

You both terrify and amaze me.

Stuff I can be proud of? Well. That's, uh... a short list.

GED's something, I suppose. Passed the tests, got 90%+ percentile rank on all tests except math, including a 99% on social studies, putting me in the top 2% (unclear if that's in general or just for people taking the test in Japan). This after being sure that I would fail, and my parents repeatedly telling me that even trying was a waste of time since my brain was apparently surgically replaced with delicious mothball soup. At least, I assume that's their logic.

So yes, that happened yesterday. Was a pretty nice surprise, doubly so as I was kept waiting. The results got here about two months late thanks to a few mix-ups.

I have been quite proud of quite a few things, only to move on to that next step and find that the thing I was proud of was really nothing at all to anyone else around me. Such is my life. I think I'm doing something great to learn later that it was nothing great at all.

See, you actually said two things here:

That you did something that you were proud of that nobody around you thought was anything.
And
That you think you did something great that wasn't great at all.

These are very different things.

The second one we all have done. Like taking a huge crap.
'Man!' you might say 'Take a look at that huge crap! It's the biggest ever!'
And then your friend comes along and says 'Bah! I took one WAY bigger then that!'
When you say the crap is huge, you're measuring it against all other craps, thus validating others opinions.

But the first one isn't to be dismissed.
Take, for instance, overcoming an addiction that nobody around you has.
Or passing a test that you in particular had trouble with.

In those instances, nobody else is involved but you. You aren't comparing addictions, or test scores with people who passed the test. You're just happy, and dare I say 'proud', of the fact that you over came an obstacle in your life. Whether it's a big thing, like an addiction, or a small thing, like that darn midterm in that class you've been suffering in all year, it was yours and yours alone to beat, and you beat it.

So even if some other girl in the class got 98% on the mid term, or nobody around even got into drugs or cigarettes or alcohol to begin with, that's not the point. The point is: You passed. You beat the addiction. Or whatever else the obstacle was. It's a victory that is yours, and yours alone, to own.

So I wouldn't be quick to dismiss things you've done.
Sometimes it's not about comparing to others. It's just about overcoming your obstacles. Great or small.

OT: For me it would be graduating college on the Dean's list, getting my first radio job, and every anniversary that I have celebrated with my wife (2 so far! 3 in May!).

I hit a third grade kid with a massive foul ball while playing softball in PE back in high school... twice. It was the same kid both times in two separate years, someone just has bad luck.

Having an amazing girlfriend for over 4 years now.
I don't know how I haven't dropped the ball yet, but goddamn I'm glad I haven't!

Getting way higher marks in the Leaving Cert than I actually needed to get into college. Also passing my driving test. Simple things in the big picture, but they're the best I've got.

The problem with me is that i'm a fairly ordinary person with ordinary talents. Nothing that i do particularly stands out, my grades were good enough to get into a decent university, i have, overall, a good set of friends. I have done the occasional memorable thing: German Exchange, Volunteer work and paid work, and gone on quite a few nice and enjoyable holidays with my family. I do a bit of creative writing when i can beat writers block, i do archery but i've never been very good at it. In sum, i'll probably get a decent job, raise a decent family and die at a decent age.

I'm not depressed about not having anything to be particularly proud of, because i don't have much to be depressed about, my life has been fairly smooth yet not uneventful, and hence nothing stands out of which i can be proud off. So i suppose i'll just say that i am glad my overall experience of life has been rather decent, and i have not experienced any major setbacks or personal crisis.

As a side note, they tend to ask this sort question at job interviews, so i'll guess i'll have to make something up, even if i don't genuinely feel proud of it. This thread has got me thinking.

Well, thats it. I did it! I FINALLY graduated from Business School! Oh its the greatest feeling in the world isn't it? That feeling of accomplishment, of pride.
That's why I'm curious as to moments where you, my fellow Escapists, have done something your proud of or have accomplished something. It could be anything. Getting that Trophy, reading War and Peace in one sitting whatever. If it made you feel proud, than say it loud!
Congratulations! You deserve every bit of pride you're feeling right now!

OT: Completing my first marathon, last year in Montreal. Over six months of training four times a week definitely paid off! Now, all I have to do is improve my time. Ultimate goal: Boston!
