So recently I discovered the Funimation Channel and saw some standard anime stuff: robots, magical girls, super fighting humans, living weapons etc. But then I watched Big Windup. An anime about high school baseball. I'm personally not a huge fan of baseball, but I just find myself intrigued by how odd this anime is by being so normal.

so anime watchers, what anime have you seen that made you that made you think, "I didn't know they could make an anime about that..."

That can make anime about *ANYTHING*. I doubt Rule 34 could even exist without that universal constant

Anime and Manga cover a lot of different topics, with enough genres and demographics to be able to appeal to everything. Most people only think of them as being things like DragonBall, which is probably because they also think of the western equivalents only being cape comics (Though there is admittedly much less diversity in western comics than eastern). It also helps that Baseball is really big in Japan, and a lot of the most popular manga are sports (EyeShield 21, Slam Dunk and *while I don't like it* Prince of Tennis).

It's also interesting to note that there is a new-ish manga, Bakuman, which is about... making a manga. It also has an anime now, so it's an anime based on a manga about making managa, and the main characters want their manga to become an anime... yeah

Yes there can be anime of anything, so I'm never surprised, maybe just a bit grossed out.

Evangelion...I didn't know they could make an (good) anime about the existential issues of the universe through the eyes of sexually frustrated tweens who drive bio-linked giant robots to fight Angels. Well the last part is normal...everything else in the anime is normal by standards but I haven't seen such a thought provoking anime, or thought it would be able to be pulled off.

Watch an anime called 'Panty and Stockings'. That is literally the definition of "They can make an anime out of anything".
Just so you know it's not violent but there is a lot of swearing and crude humour

It's pretty good, too. Basically take all the tropes from a battle manga, with rivals, big shows of force... only instead of fighting, they are trying to get the most votes and get the Number 1 spot in Shonen Jump (Though they re-named it Shonen Jack in the anime for some reason)

It's also by the people who made Death Note, so it's interesting to see a way more light-hearted thing from 'em.

Against my better judgment, I really want to put a 'yo dawg' joke in here.

OT: Well, Death Note has a main character that's basically 'Ferris Bueller by way of Rorschach', so I guess anything goes.

The reason being possible copyright issues and avoid breaking of 4th wall.

OT: For me, Yakitate Japan! takes the cake when it comes to odd subject matters of anime and manga. Basically, it uses all of the nice familiar tropes from more or less any Jump! sports manga (rivals, over-the-top powers and a vast disregard for physics) and turns it into a series about baking bread.

EDIT: I should say, odd subject matters that still work

What about Midori Days. It's about a guy who falls in love with his hand, that is also a girl.

Manga (most anime are base on it) pretty much cover ALL aspect of life including the mundane stuff like housewives and businessman.

OT- I guess it would have to be "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt".

If you haven't heard of it allow me to sum it up-

It's a very adult orientated show and the anime style is very western (something like Powerpuff Girls) compare to the traditional art style and also it makes reference to it aswell.
As for the plot, it's about two fallen angels named Panty and Stocking who are sisters. They were exile from Heaven because they are two bad angels (very bad). While on Earth a priest Garterbelt guide them to redemption by killing the ghost in the city. However the thing is their lingerie turn into weapons (the character names is the object that get turned into the weapons) Panty is a gun while Stocking is a pair of katanas. Oh did I forget to mention that in order to use their weapons they have to do a transformation scene but theirs is more like a stripper dance. By killing the ghosts they get coin from the remain and once they had gather enough they are allow back in Heaven.

You have to look it up just to see how bizzare but awesome the show really is.

Well, technically it is more about a guy falling in love with a girl, who has for some reason been transformed into his hand due to loving him so much...
