What?1 average?

You clearly aren't using the environment enough in your fighting or exploring the levels. If you go the obvious route all the time you'll only be seeing about 2/3rds of what's actually there, I've had it since 2004 and I still find new rooms on each play through.

The combat improves massively if you start thinking creatively, ever brought down an Antlion Guard with a bath tub? Or how about killing a whole quad of Combine by launching a rock at the supports of the bridge they were stood on?

I find HL2 is one of those games that reflects the effort of the person playing it, it rewards the ones that put the little bit of extra thought in.
I think it's aging fine, certainly better than any other shooters from 2004.

You are dead on the inside, please get the Orange Box, Valve make other developers look like they are using lego(which some of them are!)
Yes, as a matter of fact, I am.
Also, no.
I don't like the entire FPS genre - it's doubtful Half-Life will make me change my mind.
You'd be surprised, Half-Life is an entirely different beast compared to Halo, Call of Duty, and all the other modern shooters.

Reasons why Half Life 2 is a classic:

1. When it came out it was the only game to have physics, graphics and sound to the standard it did

2. It told the story completely through interaction, the level design was such that cutscenes were not needed, the player was never taken out of the action

No Half Life 2, no nuke sequence in COD4.

3. The grav gun

4. This is just my personal feeling, but it was the first game that ever had me truly immersed in its world and characters. I really felt a part of the world and wanted to help the people of city 17.

It influenced so many of todays shooters and pioneered so many things that we take for granted now.

One thing that's really distinguished Half-Life 2 for me is that after someone has played completely through the game, you can show them a screenshot of just about ANY location in the game, and they will say "Oh yeah, I remember that part." Whenever Valve comes up with the room, they decide that it cannot be ANYTHING like the room before it. Either a new puzzle, or a new way of defeating enemies, or a new enemy, or a TWIST on a previous puzzle, etc, etc. Compare that to many recent games, and you get a lot of repeating gunplay where you're shooting from cover, or killing a recent enemy type again.

I certainly won't blame anyone for not liking it though. That's your opinion entirely, and I can respect it.

The graphics and story are great, but those are irrelivent. Truthfully
Its Gamers like you that make me sick of the gaming community. I play games expecting a good story to come with good Gameplay. Story is absolutely essential to the making of a great game. ABSOLUTELY ESENTIAL. If you happy to go through playing bland adventures and tires plots all your life then go and sit and gawk over the Conduit and Doom.

Then you must hate gaming. There simply aren't enough games with good stories. The HL2 plot and dialogue is comparable only to a B-movie.

I'm not usually one to post things like this but please use the search button. I've read a crapload of threads like this lately, and it always starts and ends the same way. Someone makes a thread about how average it is, and then some people tell them they're crazy and some people say that it's because they are judging it by today's standards. We get the point, Half Life 2 didn't age gracefully, can we move on to a new topic now?

The story is all around you. Remember the Highway level? Did you ever look down at the sea and see that the water has been receding over the years? Why is that, could it be that the combine are completely striping us of our recourses for their own planets? They don't tell you like almost all games do, they show you how the world is fucked. Look at the news papers in Eli's lab, you will see stuff like "7 hour war ended" "Earth Surrenders". This is a game where it rewards the players that think and explore, not the run and gun players.

im not saying it is something that should b completely ignored, but i think that gameplay is more important than story n graphics by a large margin. a lot of the other classics, such as mario and diablo 2, have average stories or average graphics (by 2days standards), yet we still enjoy them bc theyre fun 2 play. a good story n good graphics are appriciated, but story wont give a game replay value.

Story and graphics are not irelevant, but still not as revalent as Gameplay.
But I liked it and disagree.

Story isn't irrelevant. So aren't graphics. The game has a good story, and it had amazing graphics for the time of its release.

The gameplay was fairly standard, but it's an FPS. What FPS has gameplay that isn't like anything else?
