I disagree with Yahtzee in a lot of areas.

I don't think he's the infallible saint some of his more vocal supporters make him out to be...

But he has been right on the money with some games; SR2 being one of them.

I disagree with Yahtzee in a lot of areas, namely in his hate for great titles that don't try many new things and his love for ridiculous wacky titles that try many new things. Many times he has spoken of his love for ridiculous things like A French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun or the wackiness (stupidness) of Saints Row 2.

I realize now that I disagree with him a lot because I actually find his tastes in gaming quite often very stupid. The idea of a French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun doesn't appeal to me at all. To clarify I'm not saying Yahtzee is a stupid person, I'm saying I sometimes find his tastes in games stupid. He seams to me like the dumb guy in the movies that laughs loudly when someone trips on a banana peel, he just happens to be very intelligent.

EDIT: To clarify I'm not calling his opinions stupid, I'm saying some of them don't appeal to ME. They seem silly to me. I want to see your opinions.
I disagree with him on almost all the games he reviews and I have played. He's quite inconsistent about his standards too. For example he implies Gears of War is for thickies yet he puts an image up of it, indirectly mentioning it as a good game. Not that the two are mutually exclusive of course.

He also lauds Painkiller for its simple, shoot all the bad guys as genius. He says the same for Left 4 Dead but other games that do this are bad. It's rather incongruous.

One more example, he claims that Halo 3's story is nonsensical because you don't know the background without the other two titles. However, he has no such complaints for Half-Life 2 Episode 2. Apparently being part of the Half-Life storyline entitles it to even more jibberish than Halo which it doesn't even have to answer for.

with most reviewers I agree sometimes. Disagree others. just because he doesn't like a game said person might find "great" doesn't mean his take on the game is stupid. I personally don't agree with his hate of JRPGs. in my opinion. WRPGs haven't been able to touch JRPGs when it comes to Story because WRPGs do this whole "open world, do what you want" BS which, lets face it. kills the story. but i completely agree with him on Nintendo throwing the same tired shit at us year after year and getting away with it

I don't know about the rest of you, but agree with him or not, I watch ZP for a laugh, and being a middle class white American, I've never had someone else's opinion forced on me at the point of a gun, so I think they are entitled to think whatever they want. If anyone feels the need to force their gaming opinion on me with a gun... well, maybe its time to up your meds...

Well if you judge by that then most people have 'stupid' tastes. Though I found Saints Row 2 to be superior to GTA 4 so I agree with him a lot.
Honestly if someone finds Gta4 to be more fun than Sr2 then they are a mindless drone
Oh dear, I'm a mindless drone.

Honestly I love his reviews but I know that they usually focus on whats wrong with the game rather than whats done right (and by usually I mean ALL THE TIME). You have to take his reviews and everyone else's with a grain of salt.

If you have fun playing a game well then who really cares what anyone else says?

I think he is paid to review games and makes them funny by using clever analogies. If you're taking them literally then you need to rethink how you critique your critics. Its supposed to be ridiculous and its his way of getting the point across that a little originality would be good every so often.

I think that Yahtzee just has really high standards for games, and I think its important to have someone like that reviewing games. I love computer games because they are basically interactive movies now,but we need them to keep getting better writing to develop thier story. If Yahtzee can get one game to do this then it was worth him being there. I find Yahtzee's apparent hate for some games generally interesting and even if he did hate them I will still buy the ones I'm interested in becuse (A) I want to play it and (B) I am interested to see if Yahtzee was right. And my final point is that Yahtzee is here to be entertaining, its fun to see someone who isn't always sunshine and happiness when it comes to computer games, having someone grumpy is always more interesting and funny. Thankyou to Yahtzee.

I partially agree with you. However, the greatest thing he did was doing a video on Painkiller. I haven't had this much fun in a shooter since Serious Sam or Half-Life (no I won't say Halo because, like Killzone 1, it's great in some areas and decent down to bad in others).

Let alone the "awesome" and "oh shit" moments in Painkiller. never had the since Serious Sam. Oh I miss Doom...

Dont be ridiculous. His idea about a game about a french chef who rides a stick insect and wields a gun that shoots veloceraptors was just hyperbole. A gross exaggeration of his wish to see more variety in games. If you were to take everything Yahtzee says literally than you may well think him insane (and even if you didnt take it literally you may well arrive at that conclusion).
this man hit it on the head. However you have to remember he is very well informed and doesn't just gloss over things, the mainstream of games is repeative ideas and monkey see monkey do mostly. With cash being the main goal (which is fine in a sense it's business) so when some tries something more ie what you call wacky he sees are a a move away from the norm of FPS and platformers that saturate the market and most are rather mindless copies with a twist.

Even if the game is his eye is a steaming pile of ass like say mirrors edge, he can see that the concept was there and the next one might be great, din;t hear many people go on about streetfighter? because it was crap, but 2 hit the sweet spot (yes i know SF wasn't the first fighting game). I do think he is overly critical at points and can lose sight of why some games are like that.

but strip most games down and stand them bollock naked in the sun and we would find errors just the same. Personally games are going the same way as music with a lot of cookie cutter ideas and thinly veiled copies and the masses will lap it up no matter what. I remember the first images and look of halo - it looked amazing and the concept of the games wasn't a straight foward fps until mircosoft bought out bungie and it was dumbed back for the mass market. It's still a good game but left on their own it could have be so much more.

it's good to stand back from the hype and look coldly at them. We pay a lot of cash for this stuff and a big stick is needed to keep the games true to form. Not just 'another' FPS or GTA clone as they are selling us second hand ideas for designer prices.

No, that's exactly what you said. You said you find his opinions stupid because you disagree with them: "I actually find his tastes in gaming quite often very stupid. The idea of a French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun doesn't appeal to me at all."

Take a minute to think about the word "stupid" and what it means. Come back once you understand the difference between a stupid person and a person who has an opinion you disagree with.

HINT: George Bush is stupid. Dick Cheney is not stupid, just an asshole.

oxymoron

?noun

a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in ?cruel kindness? or ?to make haste slowly.?

I get what all you people are saying, but I'm not going to apologize for my opinion. My opinion is that a French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun (for example) is stupid. I disagree with his tastes because I find them stupid.

He is extremely narrow minded, that's what makes his reviews fun. Though he also has a lot of good points in what he says.

@OP: Have you EVER played SR2 before calling it stupid?
It is stupid IMO but it's also mindless fun and that's why I love it.

On topic: Yahtzee has a different kind of taste. He likes innovative games. I can understand that. Several games Yahtzee likes are also some of my favourites. Just because you don't like his taste doesn't mean it's stupid.

So you are calling his opinions stupid. Are you going to remove the edit on your original post? Because that says you're not calling his opinions stupid.
