I disagree with Yahtzee in a lot of areas.

I cant help it lol, the mans a genius. I havent played most of the games hes reviewed...and i dont care either, its just hilarious. In fact, he took the piss out of one of my favourite games ( halo) and i just didnt care. Oh and the idea of a french chef riding a stick insect weilding a gun that shoots veloceraptors is awesome =D

At the end of the day, opinions vary, not everyone will agree, people will often call it "stupid" through lack of understanding that the raptor-gun idea was a JOKE.

I think some people forget that Yahtzees reviews are also filed with humour (admittedly it's touch and go with some reviews)
and that not everything he says is to be taken literally/seriously, when he touches on the games issues, yes, take it seriously, or just simply dismiss it if you happen to disagree, but don't think of him as an idiot because he has voiced an opinion and attached a joke to it to make it more relatable to an audience.

Beause what's more stupid? The person making an appealingly humourous remark about a possible game idea as joke.
Or the person who clearly thought he was serious and thinks he's stupid for saying it?

I suppose you also thought the clearly very serious "bossom-people" idea was stupid aswell?

Well I agree with him on practically everything.

I'd rather play something that doesn't make sense and is really original than the other way around - after all, games aren't real life (aside - stop making games 'realistic', it's less fun). No More Heroes was one of the best games I've played for a while, and that made no fucking sense whatsoever.

EDIT: What is this argument that 'Yahtzee is simply trying to be funny'? He has explicitly said in interviews that he seeks to make valid points, which he clearly does.

congratulations! you were able to realize that something called "own oppinion" exists. sorry but the guy is just saying his opinion about games which is of course argueable in some cases but not completly wrong.

Yahtzee is a pisser but his judgment can be questionable (thought so ever since he reviewed No More Heroes). Note I said judgment not taste. I don't mind that he liked No More Heroes (I like some bad games too) what bothered me is that he recommended everybody buy a terribly underdeveloped and tedious game full of repetition and quick time events. He just made that overrated game even more overrated.

In fact I don't mind at all when he tears apart a good game (or a bad game that I just like anyway) but I hate it when he doesn't tear apart a bad game that needs to be taken down a peg. Thankfully that's very rare.

Good for you having an opinion, I believe a famous philosopher compared having opinions to a certain part of the anatomy, everyone has one but not everyone wants to hear them.

"A French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun" He was using that as an example for how old games were super original and now there all sequels, mostly. Also if he makes you angry, don't let it get to you we all have different opinions and so does yahtzee. He is an ashole though, I still hail him as my favarite review and the one and only "perfesional troll"

I find it hilarious that many people respond to someone else's opinion by saying the fantastically trite little mantra "LOL everyone has an opinion, you don't matter! LOLOLOL!"

That means your opinion doesn't matter either, smartass.

For the record--and since just making some asinine quip about opinions being useless is just an excuse not to think--MY opinion is that he's funny but a tremendously bad game reviewer. Besides being breathlessly inconsistant, and having standards that shift dramatically whenever it pleases him, Benny Hill tends to make up things about games that people who have played them (like me) can point out to be utterly untrue or at best only true if you don't know how to play.

For example his original Darkness review stated he couldn't get past a certain gate. Well fine and all, except that there is at least two different ways to do so, both of them easy to suss out if you try, and one of which is explained to you by a passer-by if you talk to them. In his Turok review...well literally everything he said was either completely false or a gross misunderstanding of how to play the actual game, to the point i wondered if he actually even played it. Similarly his review of Mirror's Edge he goes on about the "bloom" being too much (from what i can see, there hardly is any glare) and he says you can only reach the next ledge if you turn slowly...no, there is a button that allows you to turn in mid-jump, as explained in the tutorial section which he seems to have skipped as many of his other citiques show.

Now i know immediately some smartass is going to say that "OMG itt is jst for fun!" as some kind of response but again that's just a pathetic excuse not to think. If someone walks into a room and says the BLUE wallpaper is too gaudy, but the wallpaper is RED, then obviously they either havn't actually seen the wallpaper or can't tell the difference.

Yay, another ZP thread, radical! Thanks, so much, there aren't nearly enough of these created in any three day period.

I disagree with Yahtzee in a lot of areas, namely in his hate for great titles that don't try many new things and his love for ridiculous wacky titles that try many new things. Many times he has spoken of his love for ridiculous things like A French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun or the wackiness (stupidness) of Saints Row 2.

I realize now that I disagree with him a lot because I actually find his tastes in gaming quite often very stupid. The idea of a French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun doesn't appeal to me at all.
I am quite sure that his point with the french chef was to emphasize the point that most "awesome" game titles in the current market are limited to the themes: "fantasy warrior/ wizard saves kingdom" "mysterious ninja saves hot girl" or "rugged space marine saves universe", and choosing an absurd and silly example is fantastic, but what about open world cartoon villain. That is an excellent creative concept (that I can't ever do now because he had the idea, grrrrr!)

The whole hate thing is also a shtick; he doesn't actually hate these games / titles the character he portrays on ZP is about communicating game reviews from the perspective of someone who hates games, he does it very well too, it is a quality series for that reason. You may not respond to the humour, putting you in a minority this Generation X styled bitterness is very popular with the game fan community.
Post title edited for clarity, superfluous poll removed. -mod
Ouch, this makes me laugh at you. Too bad, guy, don't be a troll! ;) *emoticon*

I realize now that I disagree with him a lot because I actually find his tastes in gaming quite often very stupid. The idea of a French chef shooting veloceraptors out of a gun doesn't appeal to me at all. To clarify I'm not saying Yahtzee is a stupid person, I'm saying I sometimes find his tastes in games stupid. He seams to me like the dumb guy in the movies that laughs loudly when someone trips on a banana peel, he just happens to be very intelligent.

EDIT: To clarify I'm not calling his opinions stupid, I'm saying some of them don't appeal to ME. They seem silly to me. I want to see your opinions.
I think the point you're trying to make, tooktook, is invalid. You keep saying you think his "tastes in gaming"*1 are stupid, based on only one (of quite a few he's made) idea for a video game. And not only was the idea, which I think everyone could agree on, silly; it was (as stated earlier) a hyperbole - an exaggeration. Or more simply if you'd rather think of it, a joke. The fact that you're still going on about disliking it gives me the impression that either you're too young or dense to understand half the jokes Yahtzee makes, or that you have more of an issue with his sense of humor, or manner of speech.

I've yet to play Saints Row 2, nor will I probably ever. But pertaining to his idea for another game early on in his review, I found myself thinking, "Holy shit, I would play that." As dumb as that may sound to you as well, I, for one, think a video game made in the same spirit of satire and innovation as, say, Portal, applied to a comic superhero universe would do very well.*2

*1 - How someone's "tastes in gaming" differs from their "opinions" goes over my head. So if you could explain that one to me...
*2 - Does that sound dumb or would you play something like it?

Yahtzee isn't stupid, and he's certainly correct in many areas. There isn't enough variety in video games anymore, to the point where I saw gaming magazines giving Halo (dull and, IMHO anyways, incredibly poorly written) maximum scores and ragging on Folklore (one the best games of the last few years) for being bizarre and quirky and different. In that area at least he is DEAD RIGHT.

Having said which, I don't agree with everything he says. There are times when he is entirely too critical of issues that don't bother me much. That's the way it always is. I don't always agree with Margaret and David (Aussie movie reviewers) but I enjoy watching their show anyways.

It's not hard people. Take what he says with a pinch of salt and enjoy the show. Sheesh!
