I did not intend to make a list for this, but it seems like the only way wrap this up quickly. So:

- Every Valve game, excluding Portal
- Call of Duty series
- Dragon Age (and the demo for the sequel was awful too)
- JRPGs
- Racing games
- Music games (though I did love the first two Guitar Heros and the first Rock Band)
- Most RTS games (Sins of a Solar Empire was lovely though)
- Mafia and it's sequel
- Battlefield games
- The first two Fallouts
- Uncharted

And I definitely forgot a boatload of games but whatever.

Starcraft. I find it too fast-paced to actually be enjoyable. In single player, unless you know exactly what units the enemy is fielding, your army will get wiped out in seconds and you'll have to start over. In multiplayer, if you haven't built the a certain number of units that directly counter your opponent's in the first 30 seconds, you might as well resign the game. Playing Starcraft is not fun, it's like a job. And a taxing one at that. AS far as I'm concerned, Blizzard did not make a good RTS until Warcraft III.

Team Fortress 2...I just...don't get the appeal. It feels very kitschy, and I know it's supposed to be that way and all tongue-in-cheek and witty...but I think it's just dumb. And every time I've tried to play a game, it's less of a firefight and more of a trade bazaar ("I need *such and such material* for this hat/accessory lolz! Hu want to trade?"). That and the fanbas is MILITANT in its defense of the game. I like Battlefield Bad Company 2, CS: Source, and the like...but I'm willing to admit that the game has shortcomings; however, many of my TF2 loving friends REFUSE to accept that there is ANYTHING wrong with the game. By doing that, they almost lower themselves to the level of "bro gamers" and their mindless defense of Madden, Halo, and CoD.
Which is funny, because while this is true, these same staunch defenders turn around and ***** every time a new update comes out. Team Fortress 2 is a rare game in which nostalgia actually applies. It was better two years ago, because it wasn't Valve's lab rat for testing purchase models and preorder bonuses. They always joke about turning it into a war-themed hat simulator, which would be funny if it weren't true.

Yeah. I'm one of those rare, rare, rare individuals who just doesn't get the hype around the Half Life games. I liked Portal, but the HL games themselves just leave me for dead and I'd rather play Unreal or Quake. =/

But my question, Escapist, is this: what's the game that you just don't get along with despite the general consensus labelling it as awesome?
I used to care abut opinions like these. Not any more as I realise it's just a personal preference, not a slight against the game's quality.

I couldn't get into Half Life and Final Fantasy VII. I know what those games represent and I understand why they're (were) considered pinnacles in their respective genres but I just didn't enjoy them as much as everyone else. I do respect them though.
Also I'd like to add Halo, Borderlands and recent Call of Duty titles to this list. Don't have any excuses for these. They just sucked. Yeah, I went there :p

Borderlands.

I have a friend that loves it. It's a good game...but having MILLIONS of guns doesn't appeal to me as much as having a few guns and great gameplay.

...and COD. It's another good game. But i don't see what makes it a great game.

I just don't understand how people can enjoy Morrowind and Deus Ex. I played them both back in 2002, and I hated those games back then too.

Any Final Fantasy game starting with 7 and up, I just don't get it .. they're mediocre at best so why all the hype and love ? they aren't bad but there are a lot of far better jrpgs out there ...

Baldurs gate 1&2, i did play them way way late, think it was 2004 or 2005 when I first played it so you can argue that I'm a graphics whore or that I just don't get it since I played it late .. I dunno, the fact is I played fallout 1&2 around the same time and found them to be very good and quite enjoyable so it's obviously not the graphics or anything since I really don't care for graphics, I found however that the interface was very bad in BG and the story seemed fairly bland and generic (at least the bit I played of it), the gameplay mechanics were also not the best and really nothing made me want to play it, maybe I'm wrong and it's a grate game it just didn't attract me in any way and I really love rpgs so that just doesn't ad up if the game was good ...

I would say halo but I'm sure a lot of people have already said it or will say it, also the fact is that the first halo was actually quite good, the sequels failed to impress me but that's another story.

Anyway, I guess I could probably think of a few more but really I don't see the point.. also along the years I've become fairly good at spotting games that I won't like before actually playing them and so I can't really name any since I avoided them to begin with.

Can't stand Halo. When my friends start playing it, I leave.
...Wow. You sound like an amazing friend.

Then again, so do they, for playing a game they know one of them doesn't like rather than finding something else to do.
To be honest, I would suck it up and play with them anyway, because there are four of us in the group and I take it that's the ideal number of Halo players, but they make fun of me because I suck at it and I get bored as hell just watching. I often try and entertain myself while I wait for them to be done, but they can go at it for hours. One can only shoot cans with a pellet gun for so long before one feels like going into a boredom coma.

They aren't bad people, either. They've been dragged to enough conventions and events that I know for sure they care about me. We all seem to have ADD or something that otherwise hinders our social lives, so we can be selfish or defensive at times, but we all love each other and care honestly about each others happiness. We're a communist, a fantasy artist, an underachiever, and a socially inept Whovian. We don't have much except each other.
Haha, OK. No harm done, then.

You'd think there'd be a game you all could enjoy out there, though.

Thought for the day: today. gespulau

Uh.. Call of Duty, all except 2 (which was the only good game in the series).
Halo, all of them.
Half Life 1 and 2.

Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed 2.

I honestly just can't comprehend why these games are universally praised.

I found the origianl HL to not hold up today, but HL2 and it's episodes are still amazing games.

I'm probably going to need flame armor too... from all the flaming hadoukens I'm going to catch.

Street Fighter. In general.

I know, I know, venerable franchise with lots of history, but I'm just TERRIBLE at them. Combos are my achilles heel, and if I do end up winning, it's via fluke or spamming attacks, and unlike some, I do NOT want a hollow victory. It's just... they make me feel like a fraud or a loser.

There was this comic I saw recently - it's from Overcompensating, and I think it's the current latest one, and since I can't post it here, here's the basic gist of the comic:

"You know, I don't like a lot of things. Other people like those things, but I find they just not for me.

So.

I'm going to go on to the internet and find people who like the thing I dislike. I will tell them I dislike it. I'm sure it's fine for them, but I don't like what they like. I think the most useful way for me to spend my time is to SPECIFICALLY FIND PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY LIKELY TO LIKE THE THING I DISLIKE, AND THEN TELL THEM I DISLIKE IT. Nothing can go wrong, right?"

(10 hours later):

"ARGH! Why won't these people accept the fact that I don't like what they like! And I HAVE to tell them I don't like it.... it's useful, vital information. I don't need to give concrete reasons I disliked it, I just have to say I don't like it, and immediately I expect a fruitful and thoughtful conversation to follow!"

Now, look, I've been guilty of the above, most people have. But I think it's about time we stopped. So you don't like game X. Okay, that's fine. Why don't you like Game X? Will explaining your dislike of Game X drive the conversation anywhere?

Lately, these sorts of threads have been popping up all over the damn place. Barely a day can go by, without a "I don't like Game X/Musician Y/ Film Z or Book V" thread. Unless your dislike can be pinpointed down to a specific mechanic, character, phrase or rhythm, the conversation is useless and doesn't go anywhere, and will devolve into pointless fan-flaming and trolling and overreactions.

Now, had you said: "I don't like Half life, for these reasons, and here is how I think I can improve the game", then you're getting somewhere. The conversation serves a purpose. Everyone dislikes something. Knowing that, in itself, is useless. We all know that all people will never love all games at all times.

In response to your question..... I don't really like Final Fantasy VIII very much. Mostly due to the combat system - I just didn't like it. All the talk of Junction-ing and GF's and drawing magic was annoying to me, and I didn't like the fact that all random encounter enemies would always level up with you. I dislike all fighting games as well. As in, all fighting games. I dislike a LOT OF STUFF. I hate certain shades of green, and I dislike pink. I don't like spiders or gangsters. I dislike the taste of Mustard. I hate Justin Bieber's haircut. I can't stand anything Lady Gaga does, period. I dislike hot days and very cold days, I don't like mud on my shoes, I hate Comic Sans font and I really, really can't stand the feeling of a hard-boiled egg in my mouth when I'm eating one (it feels like a slimy eyeball in my mouth). I dislike newspapers that have opinionated headlines, I dislike people who listen to their music on the bus with the volume way up, I dislike wasps and dirty Garden shears and algae in my pool. I didn't think much of "The Green Hornet", "Avatar", or "E.T" and I also don't like books such as "Gravity's Rainbow", "Dice man", and "Pride and Prejudice".

We all dislike a lot of things.

The Chances are: something you like, someone else hates. EEEVVVVVEEERRRYYYYYY ONE is different. EVERY ONE has different tastes. There really isn't anything such as "good" taste or "bad" taste, there's just personal taste. What you like or dislike, depends on YOU.

I love the people who are like, "I know I'm going to get flamed but *insert fairly common opinion*" and act like they just called out Citizen Kane. With as many gaming genres and sub-genres as there are and with even those labels being hopelessly vague, there aren't a lot of absolutes. Blops is the best FPS ever/CoD has gone downhill/FPS's always suck & StarCraft is the best RTS ever/it is too shallow/RTS's are for pansies. No matter what opinion you have, there's a large segment of gamers who agree with you. Unless you never liked Portal; that makes you weird.

To answer the question, I cannot stand Alan Wake. Every time Alan opens his stupid mouth, I have to turn the game off lest I hurl it off a bridge. Kinda weird since it is the kind of game I should love but the narration is just so dully delivered and painfully unnecessary it drives me insane.

Gonna put my flame armor on first.

The Call of Duty games. At least, the latest ones. I've been playing it since the first and up 4 they were all amazing (except 3, it was good but not as good as the others). But now they are just kind of meh at best, it's more puzzling because the new ones just aren't that great.
enough people hate call of duty so that a normal person isn't going to be outraged or upset at all that you don't like it, and i don't blame you. i personally enjoy it, but i like more realistic shooters more than COD

*puts on flame armour* since i am one of the 6 individuals with this opinion, i really didn't like morrowind
