the people slaughtered by the legion.
Population control, genetic extermination or 'diseased/impure' (as the Legion believes most Western Americans are) genocide. I do not condone genocide in the slightest, but it wasn't just meaningless extermination. They had fair goals, and as a result those who survive the Legion's war live in a safe empire
They live in a safe empire, unless they commit any crime at all in which case they suffer horrific penalties. Or should they be born female in which case they are entirely subjugated. And a safe empire built on slavery is hardly "safe" for everyone. Not to mention it's a society where medicine and science are taboo, to the extent that potentially life saving medicines are denied to all and yet the leader in fact relies entirely on this technology to survive. What's more, to condemn people for being impure whilst committing atrocities against them is a lot of hypocrisy to deal with IMO, the followers are right in their pacifism in this respect I feel.
I've had this discussion before and I fail to see any redeeming features of the Legion.
I respect your views. I just guess that's the difference between you and me.
I'm not saying they're right, I'm just not saying they are wrong.
Up until recently, every great empire relied on these very rules. Slaves are what -makes- an empire. It's unfortunate, but it's true. No empire in history could have existed without armies and armies of slaves.
As for the woman thing, well, yeah okay that sucks.. but again, it's true in history. However we feel about it now, it was done for tens of thousands of years in almost every society on Earth. I mean women weren't given full rights in today's world until pretty recently, and the segregation of the Blacks, even more modern. We mustn't forget that just because today we live in a free society, this only happened for everyone until ridiculously recently.
Medicine etc in the futuristic (yet also old-fashioned) world of Fallout I agree, it shouldn't be outlawed. but they are based on the ancient empire of the Romans, were they then thought that modern thought of anatomy and medicine were taboo and criminalised people who thought out too much.
You have to remember and realise- the world of Fallout is SO different to ours today. The world may as well be set in Ancient times, with the amount of savagery and complete disregard of humanity and technology. In these circumstances, and empire such as the Romans, would work. Order and peace are more important in times of crisis than free will and democracy. That is why in times of war and catastrophe, the Romans would elect a dictator with total power until this crisis was averted or stopped.
In order to create peace, the only solution in this world is war and conquest, which is exactly what the Legion does, and I agree 100%. When people disregard humanity so much, as in Fallout, they do not deserve diplomacy even if they wanted it (which no one seems to want). To create peace, war. Take over the land, and create your empire over them. Subjugate everyone under harsh law, make them remember a time before the war. A time of lawfulness, respect, honour etc etc.
This is where ancient empires excel. The Romans, and especially the Mongols, brought civilization to the uncivilized, culture to the uncultured, law to the unlawful.
The only reason we look poorly on the Legion, as with any harsh empire (again, Mongol empire is a prime example) is because we do not realise or understand the circumstances and the benefits they bring. Nowadays we do not need empires, but back then you did. (and I class Fallout world as 'back then')
