No, this isn't about Sonic. Or Sonic Team. This is just a sort of confession. Went outside cause my dog was barking and yapping like a mad thing. Found him rolling a balled up hedgehog around the drive, trying to pick it up in his mouth. I managed to man handle him back into the house and shut him away, then I went back outside to find the hedgehog and try to help it but it?s disappeared. We haven?t got a torch and I spent a good ten minutes looking for the little fella. The fact it?s moved so quickly could be a sign it?s alright couldn?t it? It was a very big hedgehog and my dog is only small. I hope it?s not injured and doesn?t die.

You reckon I did the right thing? I did go to try and help it. I'll take another look in the morning to see if it's around but I feel so guilty. They're lovely little animals.

It's probably fine, if a little shocked.

Hedgehogs are tough litte blighters, and those spikes only help it.

Don't feel bad, chances are it's more than ok! ^^

I would say that as it got away so quickly, it's more than likely that it's fine. If it were injured I would expect it would remain balled up defensively - it wouldn't have been able to scarper in the short time that it would have taken to put the dog in, I would think.
Esp. as it's a small dog, I would imagine the little thing will be fine!
In any case, you did all you could. Good on ya for getting the dog away from it! =)

He's done this about five times. I don't think he realises what they are... Just keeping an eye on him now. He was a bit bloodied up but I've washed him. Just need to keep an eye on him in case he swallowed any quills. Thanks for the reassuring comments :)

You've done more then most would have done already ;)

Don't worry about the hedgehog, its spines protected it from the dog, especially if it was a small one as you said.

If anything, it's the dog that most likely got hurt the most. You can look around for the hedgehog, but he will likely long be gone, and that's a good sign.

If he is still around, give him something to eat ^^

Edit: The dog was bloody? Ouch....

Depending on the exact species, hedgehogs are tenacious/tough little bastards. The European hedgehog regularly kills adder snakes. If it moved away so quickly it is probably fine.

Sonic and Samus (my hedgehogs) thank you for your actions.

Nope you did the right thing, get the dog away from it first and foremost and hedgehogs are very resilient and speedy (Sonic ain't just pulled out of nothing) so it probably legged it the second it felt it was out of immediate danger.

It's probably just fine.

Good. I told the dog off and he's currently sulking on a blanket next to my desk. I reckon I'll need to keep him shut in at night during the summer. He's a jack russell so he's pretty fearless. Had a standoff with a fox that was prowling through our front garden once... Lucky he wasn't killed.

If that hedgehog could be killed by your small, domesticated animal, it probably wouldn't have survived long in the wild anyway.

At least that's what I tell myself when my dog kills things.

Sounds like you did everything you could, don't feel guilty. You removed the immediate threat and came back to find it had gone. As you said, since it had the ability to flee it must be capable of surviving ^^ Hedgehogs are tough, don't worry about it.

The hedgehog is fine. Curling in a ball is their defense mechanism. The spines protect them, and they can just wait for the predator to go away. He probably uncurled and ran off the second your dog got shut inside.

They're tough little buggers!

Its probably fine its spines protect it from things like hungry/curios dogs I would be more concerned about your dog as you said he was bloodied, hedgehog/porcupine related injurys can get infected easly so keep on eye on your dog for signs of illness such as lethargy or lack of hunger

By the sounds of it the Hendgehog just used it's natural defences and they not-so-surprisingly worked. Seriously the little guy will be fine, maybe a little reluctant to go across your property now.

I take your hedgehog and raise you an Echidna, I wish I could get one as a pet legally.

Didn't know Britain was such a jungle of nightmarish creatures. A hedgehog, a fox, a Jack Russel oh my!

It's the great thing about living here. The deadliest wild animal we have is an adder. A snake that can barely kill children.

I think the weather there is a bit too mild for me.

My first reaction was fear that you sat on it...

Anyway, hedgehogs are nigh unbeatable by dog kind when they ball up like that since few dogs are stupid enough to brute force it and fewer are smart enough to get around it.

Just keep an eye out for an injured critter but chances are its fine.
