Hah, well when I was younger I sometimes downloaded music. At the time it didn't even occur to me that this could be a good or bad thing, it was just where "everyone else" got their music. Then I started to buy CDs because I enjoyed seeing my collection grow. Later I learned about this whole "piracy" thing, and I decided I wouldn't be a part of that.

I've only once pirated a game. This was Lucas Arts Outlaws. Before pirating it I searched everywhere I could think of, trying to buy this game. It is one of my best memories from my early gaming life, and I'd gladly pay the full $60 that a new bigshot game cost these days to get it in it's original form! In the end I became desperate and ended up finding a torrent for it... Still a great game <3.

Other than this I'm not a fan of piracy and pirates, and I don't wish to take part in it.

Fixed it for you.

God damn moral absolutism.

Except that's a load of crap. By saying that, you're implying that all pirates are immoral. Being immoral means doing something you know is wrong. Many pirates don't think what they're doing is wrong. They have different morals. By saying that it all comes down to morality, you're invalidating any value of discussing the issue because hey, pirates are immoral and evil, why should be listen to anything they have to say?

The OP said himself that he doesn't think it would be wrong for him to do it in this case, since he's already payed for the music. So obviously his morals say that there's nothing wrong. And yet he "can't do it". Maybe you're brainwashed, OP?

Absolutely loving the angry rants guys keep it up!
Except for you Spartan1362, you're absolutely right I probably should have wrote different instead of stronger, it just felt like the better term to me in that frame of mind...
All I said was that he had stronger morals, deep down he knew it was wrong and so he didn't download the song even though he paid/half paid for it, I'm not rambling about BLUH PIRACY IS BAD BLUH, just that his morals dictate how he reacts more than other people. Some would definitely screw morality if they got some kind of personal gain in exchange.
No need to start an argument.

Hell, I don't pirate stuff either. Mainly because I just cant be bothered to do so. If it takes any kind of effort to do stuff on the internet then I wont go near it. Going on a site and downloading shit? Nuh uh.

To be fair though, if there is something that I really want, then I will go and buy it. I like physical copies of things. Even if it just gives me the illusion of ownership (as the big game publishers will have us believe) then I'm happy to pay money. In terms of music, theres only 2 bands I am serious enough about to splash the cash out on anyway. So thats one CD every other year?

I used to be a pirate, but repeated injuries caused by stray bullets as we and my Somalian brethren commandeered ships and slaughtered their crew had forced me to quit my dangerous habit of stealing plunder from merchant ships and holding tourists hostages. Then I immigrated to Israel and now I'm living a good, pirate free life as a student.

Congratulations, you have earned the ability to flaunt a form of moral superiority over others. I would say its slightly odd though that you managed to get as far as searching for the album on a torrent site and just about to hit the download button before this attack of morality hit you though!

Good on you however, Im sure that karma boost will reward you at some point shortly. :)

I was highly tempted to do such a joke, but I felt the moment is gone.

To the Opening Post - Good job, 'ol lad - nice to see you respect other people's intellectual property.

Since I am legally able to obtain digital backups of any media I own I can say that I have used TPB to acquire such backups whether they be movies or games or whatever.

Well done (clap clap clap) you're a great person (clap clap clap) for going that far and stopping (clap clap clap) and then telling everyone about it (clap clap clap) presumably with the sole intention that we will all applaud you. Clap.

Though I find it fascinating that the guy that said he pirated 90% of all his media got a warning, but the very next poster admitted to pirating 95% and didn't get a scratch!

What's up with that?

Being Dutch, I am allowed to legally download music by means of a personal back-up.
So, I have neither a moral problem with it. (I pay additional tax on empty CD's and DVD's)
Nor any legal.

Yet those bastards at Brein did manage to block the pirate bay.

Welcome to the internet, where arguments arise from what colour you prefer and end up with a discussion on how 9/11 was an inside job.

What you are experiencing is not some strange phenomenon, you simply have a strong enough moral compass that you are unwilling to commit an action that is unethical and clearly against the law. For that you should be applauded, so welcome to the Lawful Good side of life.

Unless his brother's around, in which case he would just copy the disc in iTunes.

You know, still piracy.

You've probably borrowed games or movies from friends, or played/watched them at friends' houses, in which case you're a pirate anyway.
