I'd say console gaming is dying out as a whole.

You see what the current consoles can do now. Watch movies, surf the internet, check youtube... eventually people are going to realise, "Hey! This isn't a console anymore! This is a PC!"

Then I shall appear before the new PC users and lead them to the Promised Land of PC gaming as their savior! And there shall be free cookies every Sunday!

Okay, maybe not the last bit there, but can someone give me free cookies every Sunday anyway?
You do realize console sales almost triple PC sales.. right?

I must say that graphical updates (aka the reason we need new consoles) are getting pretty much redundant. Face it, they are good enough now. But either way, if the game is good (StarCraft, anyone?), then even for its rough edges nobody will abandon it.

In that sense, the 360 (and rest of consoles) is pretty much stuck with us. And I don't see anyone having a problem with it. Until hardware makes a leap into terahertz speeds, anyway.

In other words, closest "next generation" is not really that better than what we have here since 2005. Stuff still looks like plastic and gets broken two times a week. Also, they don't need to a new generation to, say, make a fully compatible console upgrade.

Doesn't change the fact that your statement about FF13 exclusivity is incorrect. Didn't they remove a lot content to make the game fit onto 3 Xbox disks, at the last minute? Funny that...

Oh, and it doesn't change that the rest of your statement is mere opinion.
So it's an opinion. Earth-shattering revelation, I know.
Or perhaps you could have figured this out by actually reading my original post:

In my opinion, Microsoft is more likely to remain than Sony.

And it really pains me to say that.
So was there a point to that "accusation"? Or were you just trolling me?

Though for the sake of clarity, I'll edit the original post.

I doubt that, unless you are counting their games

You think that Sony and Nintendo are going to release a 'next generation' console any time soon? looooooooool.
Actually, nintendo is due fairly soon (two years) .
Maybe It'll have tech comparable to the first xbox this time :/

Anyway, I don't see Sony releasing a new Playstation anytime soon. The Move and Kinect are essentially the same thing, an extension of this console life cycle in an attempt to grab some of the Wii audience.

As for Xbox live, yeah the point system is a little silly, but it functions perfectly fine, and the online experience is superb. Demos, videos, indie games, and numerous other features give me an experience I'm more than willing to pay for. Yes the PS3 has comparable services, but I just prefer Xbox to Playstation.

Another thing worth noting is the massive developer support for the 360. Developers love programming for the 360 over the PS3 because it's easier to work with.

The 360 has just as many quality titles as the PS3 (and Wii I guess?) and there's really no reason to consider Microsoft out of the running. You're jumping to some pretty wild conclusions.

11th hour?

No, it wasn't. Please notice the date on the article.
The game was released in December 2009 in Japan, and March 2010 worldwide.

How is E3 2008, 1.5 years before release, 11th hour?
1.5 years of a 7 year development cycle; with that last year being crunch time.
If there is any time you do NOT want to make sweeping changes to your product, it's the last year of development.

Like spending more money porting it to another platform.

For most titles, I would agree that 1.5 years isn't terribly late; probably middling for your average title.
FF13 is not one of those titles. You do NOT spend 5 and a half years working on it (migrating from PS2 to PS3 development platforms, courtesy of Sony) and then decide to bite the hand that feeds you without a damn good reason.

As a multiplat, it was slightly better on PS3, rendering your earlier point about such things, moot. Remember, it's the devs that are to blame for shabby ports.
To decide to port to a different system during that time is unusual; doubly so for Squeenix who has a habit of sticking to their contracts (when they dumped Nintendo back in 97', they dumped them HARD).

This is what I mean that Sony was having problems holding onto some of their big name exclusives. Case in point: FF13 was CLEARLY intended to be a PS3-only title, but Squeenix jumped ship rather late into development (late for a massive 7 year title), resulting in the lower quality 360 version.

Actually, I'd like to know why they dropped the exclusivity myself...I have a few theories.

everyone's always so short sighted about everything.

Microsoft is doing Fine.

Sony's doing fine.

Nintendo's doing fine. Perhaps better then fine, but wii sales are slowing down a bit.

Nintendo is likely to release a new console first, as theirs was graphically behind the curve anyway to keep costs down. Now they can upgrade their shit to where the 360 is now and still keep costs down. They'll likely do that once they figure out what they want to do with that power that they can't do with the Wii. I'm sure it's in the works.

Microsoft and Sony are likely to hold onto their current generation consoles a little longer (at least until a while after Nintendo makes the first move). The PS3 finally has a game cataclogue worth mentioning, and the 360's early problems such as red rings and poor hard drive capacity are largely remedied. They've put a lot of time and work into getting their two systems into the positions they're in now, and I'm sure they want to sit, smell some roses, reap some rewards for that hard work, and chill before they have to gamble most of their credibility away again.

A new console generation, except maybe from Nintendo, wouldn't be good for anyone right now. Gamers, Game Developers, and even the Parent companies themselves. Now that we have the graphics of these systems, lets sit and enjoy them before moving on.

Look at the sales of the more popular cross platform games.
PCs made up about 12% of total copies bought with black ops, Xbox being 53%
was the same with modern warfare.

Advertising dollars rule the world... and Microsoft has plenty of that to spend.
I don't know about that; there has to be more to the story than just Microsoft's fat wallet.

A bit of history:
Nintendo was still on top of their game back in 1996 before Sony's revolution. Squaresoft had a falling out with them following the release of Super Mario RPG, and they did no real business with Nintendo until 2002-2003. Point being: When they were loyal to Nintendo, they were loyal. When they were loyal to Sony, they were loyal to Sony.

Now, they aren't really loyal to anyone but themselves.

Nintendo had plenty of capital to throw around, and it's not like Squaresoft was hurting at all; they were in the midst of their glory years.

So either Squeenix has lost its faith in exclusive titles and "1st Party favor", or Sony pissed them off to the point where they were willing to do business with Microsoft (despite the 360 being a dud in Japan).

Your earlier sentence made it seem like you are counting console sales. And of course there are more PCs being sold than consoles.

That aside, i don't really like the CoD series anyways :p

Bring me an attractive girl and the moment she falls in love with me, I'll bake you cookies every Sunday. For free.

If my world were a game, it'd suck...I mean, the best prize comes as a result of a fetch quest. Sorry I didn't have better level designers, but these are hard times for the industry.

That's definitely incorrect. As many other posters have pointed out, Microsoft is making oodles and oodles of money.

I can't help but agree with most of this.

I can guarantee a big portion of 360 sales come from 3 areas:

1. People who had the original XBox and wanted to see more from Halo*.
2. People who don't want to spend a fortune on something they'll play every now and then.
3. People who bought one because all of their friends have one.

* Not just Halo, but rather as Xbox IPs in general.

With Sony recoving from the PS3's initial shock in the sales department, they're regaining favour within the gaming community (and have been for some time). Uncharted has been one of the best things to happen to Sony and it probably owes a fair bit of its success to Naughty Dog's game.

When it comed to Microsoft, Sony are competing with accessibility, camraderie and two or three big IPs.

Now when Microsoft come to battling Sony, they're competing with powerful hardware*; steadily increasing accessibility; growing online community; free, quality online play and some pretty big, well established IPs.

* I don't care how much of a ***** it is to develop for, do it right and you get amazing results.

(NOTE: Please not that all things written above are opinion and as such are open for discussion).

1) Microsoft is still kicking ass in sales (I think that it's second behind Wii and closing fast)

2) XBL affords many different services that PSN does not have, and the support for the online marketplace by MS is greater than that afforded by either Sony or Nintendo

3) I agree that MS WILL find itself in a troublesome spot if it continues to sink money into [risks like the Kinect/established franchises like Halo] rather than safeguarding console exclusives (ie Mass Effect, Bioshock).
Still, Microsoft has a lot of work to do;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars#Current_generation

If you read that, you can see that Wii is on 70M, Xbox is on 46M and PS3 is on 41M. On paper, it would seem more likely that PS3 would beat Xbox, than Xbox beat Wii

Honestly?

The next generation is Nintendo's to lose. They have the money to spend on R&D, they have the massively successful sideline in handhelds (with a new one coming up next year), and they have the initiative.

My predictions are that:
1) Nintendo announces a new console in E3 2012. It will have motion controls of some description.
2) Sony and Microsoft hurriedly creates something to compete with it, probably based on their existing consoles. Again, motion controls will be a focus.
3) People who wants to avoid motion controls like a plague buys a PC.
