Ramsden was "far too British", so you change it to Threepwood, the name of the 9th Earl of Emsworth and his quintessentially British upper class family from P.G. Wodehouse novels?
That's like someone called Andrew Munro deciding his name is far too Scottish and changing it to Bagpipe McSporran.
Yes but Threepwood, while British. Isn't as common at Ramsden. I will no longer have to explain that I am no relation to Fish and Chips. Before everyone start saying "Oh you're gonna need to explain Guybrush Threepwood"
Most people, more everyday in fact, don't know who he is so wont even ask.
Plus, I wouldn't change my name if I wasn't prepared to explain it at least a bit.
The very fact that most people don't know his name is the exact reason people will ask. If somebody at my workplace saw a guy on our books called Guybrush Threepwood everyone would be asking the question as soon as they stopped laughing. I'm not going to criticise your decision, because I don't have the right, however my opinion is that it was rather stupid and that you've basically done this for the sole reason that you want to stand out. That's just what it seems like to me, regardless of what you say. No offence meant, of course, but that's my two pence. And I'm no stranger to weird names - I'm British like you, yet my full name is Trivun Luzaic. My dad was born in the UK to Serbian immigrants and I was named after my grandfather, and I wouldn't change my name for anything. I have to explain it all the time, whereas I can't think of many people I know who would make the association between you and Harry the fish dude.
For the record, my workplace is one of the local offices of a nationwide construction firm's repairs and maintenance division (specifically working on a contract with a housing association), and one of the tenants we have changed his name by deed poll to Darth Vader. We literally have a Darth Vader on our tenant list who seems to have an unusually large number of problems with his drainage systems...
