In written communication they can be very useful in making yourself understood. And I much prefer them to 'lol'.

They are invaluable. Why? Because when texting there is a difference between:
You fucking idiot
You fucking idiot :p
It allows the tone of your voice to be transmitted. Otherwise we would have to go " Crying my tears out: Whatever."

The French emoters [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony_punctuation#Irony_mark][footnote]later called emoticons when some text engines would parse out known ones and replace them with actual graphic depictions[/footnote] during the 19th century and it didn't catch on, and the criticism of their extended puntuation still apply.

I've been around since before the more creative ones (e.g. roses, genetalia and other complex pictography).

But I avoid them for general use myself, since I prefer the practice of using literary cues that I'm joking, being ironic or sarcastic. On the other hand, I have used expanded HTTP[footnote]exempli gratia, blurb when I'm lampshading [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LampshadeHanging] my own preachiness.[/footnote] to indicate my own unreliability as a human witness.

The French favored literary tools over pictographic ones, though, granted, they involve longer posts and more skill. I would only ask you be sparing in their use. If you're adding lol[footnote]or XD...[/footnote] to the end of every statement, it makes it seem like you have a nervous chuckle than you actually find things funny. Of course, that may be exactly what you're intending to convey.

I like them. And someone in this thread already said it, but it's kinda difficult to show your feelings and emotions trough text. Sure, you could do it ,but it might and most likely would look weird.

They're okay, a good, easy way to add an extra touch of emotion to comments. Just make sure you use them properly which you only need common sense to do. What I don't like is that the ones you just type out are sideways and the ones to edit or paste in or whatever are too flashy. I'd like some that are toned-down and right-side up.

The only thing I hate about damn emoticons is that people on Facebook think you're being hostile or some crap if you don't use them in every damn sentence.

Don't really see how they are annoying. Things like grammar, emoticons, and slang just don't bother me any more. There are more important things that bother me.

Emoticons are annoying and asinine, in short they suck. If you use an emoticon it makes me think you are a twelve year old girl or that you are so inarticulate you can't get your point across. Emoticons annoy the living shit out of me and I was wondering what the Escapist community thinks. But since a lot of you use them I get the feeling I'm going to be flamed and or banned for this thread since the mods probably use them and won't like my stance.

>:)Look at it. Doesn't it annoy the shit out of you.
Stab in the dark here, but if you got you're avatar from 4chan you'd be familiar to "reaction" images, right?
Emoticons are the same thing, they've just been around for longer.

If posting a reaction image was as easy as 2 keystrokes like  :/ :D
then maybe everyone would use reaction images instead.

But as it is, emoticons are like slang, they're a part of communication that has been hijacked/re-purposed/retrofitted.

I can see how you could get annoyed at HOW people use them. But I don't really see any rational reason to just hate them. Unless you think that slang/evolution of language, is also a bad thing.

Also I fucking hate most emoticons that are "built in" to applications. Skype ones really annoy me, they just look retarded. I want the emoticon to look how I typed it, because I chose that one, I don't want to have to re-think which one to use because the image is crappy for this app.

My language should be as personal as I want it to be, and as formal as I chose it to be. Just like me, just like how I communicate in real life.

TLDR;
I dislike emoticons when they are given to me for my use within an application. But they're great when I chose to use them, I couldn't imagine typing without them ^^
If every emoticon was as personal as a reaction image, but as easy as a few keystrokes. It would be great. But the system we have now is as pretty damn convenient. Human ingenuity for the win :p

Must.... resist........ desire........... to Troll..........with lot's of emoticons.....

OT:

I can understand how they can get annoying, but I like them because of how hard it can be to express emotion on the net. Emoticons allow you to.
