Don't look toward the ultra popular and ones that go fore realism check out Team Fortress 2, Time Splitters Future Perfect and such. If you don't like it then just stick to what you like, who cares what others think. Popular doesn't mean good for you, I learned that with Zelda, screw Zelda, give me more Metroid.

I love them.

I especially like the part where you shoot the people, that's always good.

Games are just a few mechanics with a thematic paint-job that allow people to compete. The deeper the mechanics, the more wiggle room the controls allow you...the more there is to master, and the greater the difference between new and seasoned players. An FPS with good hit detection, no auto or assisted aiming, and an arsenal that allows for a few visibly different(but equally effective) strategies is about as good as competitive gaming is going to get, at least for the time-being.

The violence is also satisfying on a very basic level.
I would argue that a good fighting game is as good as competitive gaming gets but that's like, my opinion man...(Damn ninja'd)

FPS's are only good when there are huge arenas, millions of baddies and over the top guns, like a gun that can shoot rocket tigers or something

EDIT 2: My question is, why do you like fps's and can you reccomend a few games that might change my opinion.
well, one reason i enjoy FPS games is that they are easy to pick up and jump into, and that they are the easiest genre to incorporate multiplayer.

but if you arent into that, which i can understand, here are a few upcoming FPS games that you really should take a look at. they are either entirely single-player, or are majorly focused on single player and story.

RAGE
Prey 2
BioShock Infinite

I share your resentment of FPSs, for similar reasons. Gameplay is mainly just putting a cursor over the enemy and pressing a button. I mean it's okay, but how can that stay fun decade after decade? Anyway.

One might say I should just not play them and not to worry about it, and I might agree, but the resources now devoted to making mods of Unreal Tournament 3--I mean that has to take effort and investment away from other types of games I prefer, wouldn't it? If it doesn't, then FPSer's can go back to their joystick-aiming trigger-pressing fun.

I'll just bemoan they don't make strategy games like they used to and find whatever I can to blame it on.

Nah. I like FPS's ... I like to see the pixelated blood spraying out of my virtual AI oponent ... prefarably after a point-blank appointment with my shotgun

Well tbh, if you don't like FPS's in general then there's not alot out there to change your opinion.

What shooters have you actually played?

I'm not the world's biggest fan but that's mainly because I'm not very good at them. I'm not very good at aiming at things quickly, which usually results in me dying... a lot.

I've long enjoyed the Halo series for their (in my ever-so-humble and obviously fallible opinion, so don't bother arguing with me because it's all fucking subjective anyway) skillful integration of vehicles and inhuman enemies, which lend an air of spontaneity and chaotic fun to each encounter.

They sort of bore me. I just don't like them. Does anybody else not like fps's?

EDIT: I feel like I should explain more. First, I just think other genres are more fun. Second, I think most are ugly, monotone, blood splattered blehs. Third, most of them are rated mature, but they are anything other than that. Third, they just bore me. I will neve be able to be engaged by killing clone grunts with a single bullet to the head.

EDIT 2: My question is, why do you like fps's and can you reccomend a few games that might change my opinion.
First Person Shooter is NOT a genre. It is a Graphical perspective.

You can have:
FPS Action (Halo)
FPS Platformer
FPS RRG (Deus Ex, Bioshock)
FPS Stealth
FPS War sim (ARMA)

What you seem to have a problem with is war shooters in general.

I don't suppose Gears of War would interest you, even though third person?

OK, let me see, a mature, that's not all a bloody "shooting clone grunts":
-Mirror's Edge
-Portal 1 & 2
-Minecraft
-Amnesia: Dark Descent
-Zeno Clash
-The Void
-Penumbra
-Red Orchestra
-Cryostatis

Bioshock 2 is fairly unconventional and not the same old grey corridors

"In other news, Reechstak P'Flagular, the mother of a private in the United Alien Terrorist Communist Puppy Rapist Pedophile front is receiving the body of her son today. She blames the Coalition of Allied Protagonists and Justice Heroes for their militaristic stance."

It sounded better in my head...

I find it extremely odd when someone says they don't like FPS' because they are monotonous and repetitive, this can be said about every single genre of game but is only used in relation to FPS' e.g

(disclaimer: I'm speaking generally)

RPG-Grinding and leveling up experience/weaponry to fight the next enemy with some pointless mini games that are used to try and provide variety but are normally utter rubbish (the whole Chocobo breeding thing)whilst spending most of your time standing still reading dialogue.

platform-get from point A to B with a fair amount of jumping.

Puzzle-solve puzzle A, move to Puzzle B which is slightly harder, get to point K the puzzles change a bit by adding something that makes getting through puzzles take slightly more thought and repeat.

stealth-stand still until baddy goes away.

RTS- resource, build, resource, build, resource, build, attack, resource...

racing- do i really need to explain this one?

FPS-Shoot baddy, here manly dialogue, shoot baddy, slightly characterized teammate dies because he tries to holds of an enemy onslaught by waving around there steroid induced tiny penis, meet the man who killed said teammate and kill him by waving your own steroid induced tiny penis in a slightly more manly way than your deceased teammate until he falls over.

Joking aside, you can see that all games are guilty of repetitiveness and there's nothing wrong with that, and lets face it, if a game came out that was no way repetitve it would probably involve shooting a unicorn then teleporting to the 1800's to play an ultra realistic flying sim then being whisked away after 5 minutes to grind experience by stepping on beetles in Neverland (so basically Wario ware twisted)

I generally don't like pure shooters and standard military shooters (CoD, Battlefield etc.)

But I do greatly enjoy 'shooters' like say Mass Effect, Fallout 3 & NV, Half-life 2 and Bioshock.

Merely guns and such alone doesn't do it for me. I need story, real RPG elements (stats != RPG) or a really unique setting to keep my interest.

like every genre fps have their good and bad examples, it's just that right now they are the shit that makes most money so the production values for good and bad shooters are really high.

Minecraft and Portal(1 and 2) are just a couple shining examples of FPS's through non-violent means. Even though I guess those wouldn't be technically First Person Shooters. They should be called FPE's (First Person Experiences)
