Why do you want FPS recommendations just play other types of games that you do like. I don't like FPS games so I play old isometric cRPGs and grand strategy games. FPSs maybe the most popular games but that does not mean that everyone has to like them.
If you really feel that you need to play a first person game play Penumbra.

I like FPS's. One of my favorite genres, other than the style of RPG that Oblivion/Morrowind and Fallout 3 are.
It is a cool story, huh?
"cool story bro" is kind of like a meme phrase.
Look at my icon. Do I look like I care? No. No I don't.
hey, just answering your question. Wasn't sure if that was a rhetorical question or if you were just talking in broken English.

I'd have to agree with OP. I find FPSs rather boring and pointless myself. The only ones I like are those that have something to recommend them beyond being an FPS - Bioshock, for example, or STALKER. I enjoy them for their atmosphere and beautifully realised worlds. I can't stand to play stuff like CoD or Battlefield, I'd rather spend the time replaying an old RPG or poking myself in the eye with my finger.

Um, no. All those other games you listed are first-person, sure, but none are an FPS because they're not shooters.
FPS is a genre.

"i dont like black people

They sort of bore me. I just don't like them. Does anybody else not like black people?

EDIT: I feel like I should explain more. First, I just think other races are more fun. Second, I think most are ugly, monotone, blood splattered blehs. Third, most of them are called mature, but they are anything other than that. Third, they just bore me. I will never be able to be engaged by killing homies with a single bullet to the head.

EDIT 2: My question is, why do you like black people and can you recommend a few specific black people that might change my opinion?"

well to answer your question, you dont gotta like 'em, you just gotta tolerate 'em and accept their e'sistance

and sure, i suppose i could mention a few a the ones i like, but theres no use wastin' ur time on somethin that dont make you happy

If I wanted to be an ass, I could suggest that you have an inability to separate the real world from the virtual world -- that you have a psychological issue -- but that's disingenuous. It also doesn't appreciate the subtlety and power of works that do tug on our emotions -- where we have emotions for fictional characters and events.

Then again, maybe you're deserving of such an accusation since you've painted a huge genre with a very broad stroke. Your not liking FPSes is a personal matter, and there's no problem with not having a taste for certain genres -- I myself don't really care for RPGs -- but all you've given us is your opinion. You've made no claims to why they are inferior, just offered your opinion. Why does that matter, exactly?
It doesn't, not in the slightest.
What a riveting thread this is.

I don't mind the occasional fps every now and then. They certainly aren't my favourite style of game, I tend to find most of them fairly repetitive and similar.

I like some FPS's, like Halo and Half-Life, probably because of their emphasis on story, but I think the whole military FPS genre is boring. Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Homefront, even Battlefield. Yes they have their unique qualities, Homefront with its setting, Battlefield with its Frostbite engine, but I just get bored fast by them. They just get repetitive after a while.

I only really like a few FPS's, namely Goldeneye (which I'll admit to loving mostly because of my love of retro games) and the Half-Life series. And, even then, I think that almost all shooters are at least competent and have something to bring to the table, but I hate the kinds of people that play FPS' more than any other type of game. Namely frat boys. Goddamn, I fucking hate those casually bigoted human cocktails of hyper-masculine stereoypes. And, seriously why the hell do they always seem to be online? Don't they have work? Or school? Or, hell, ANYTHING aside from games?

I'm not very keen on FPSs. They just don't interest me, especially in this generation where they're everyone's "safe" option (mixed with my bitterness about the fading platformer genre in the AAA line-up). I have a certain level of respect for some FPSs like Half Life, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Metroid Prime, and even (the old) Duke Nukem, but if given the chance I prefer to play my platformers. If you count the Portal games I guess those are the only ones I've really been addicted to. Just my tastes is all *shrugs*. I like the exploration, colour, fantasy, humor, environments, and overall charm of platformers. First person in general isn't my favourite perspective (never played Mirror's Edge by the way), these days everyone is trying to "out grit" each other, seem to put most of focus in mutliplayer (let me be an introvert please), and while blowing things up is fun as hell I need a little bit more.

It's not an issue with guns. Guns are a-ok for me, but Ratchet and Clank satisfies me more than most shooters these days and it's a freaking platformer at heart. You can stick a rocket launcher up an alien's ass in any game. Pfft, but how many of them let you turn them into CHICKENS?

(Mind you, I'm still interested in what Insomniac does with Overstrike. Seems like a hybrid of R&C and Resistance though I'm not 100% sure of perspective)

This whole thread smacks rather loudly of what TV Tropes refers to as "Complaining About Shows You Don't Like" (or in this case, "Games You Don't Play") but I'll go ahead and give your subject a shot. (no pun intended)

I will agree that many modern shooter (intentionally leaving "first person" out of this) are ugly to look at. I tried a used copy of the first Gears of War a while ago, and frankly I don't get what all the hype was about. Sure, the "damage bonus for acing the reload check" thing was nifty, but overall I like my games to have more colors to them than just gray, for I am a fidgety and easily-bored sort. However, as many others have pointed out already, there are many shooters out there that have more to them than shooting. There's the obvious "melee only" routes that Bioshock and Fallout 3/NV provide, among others that sadly I haven't played yet, there are item creation sub-games (Fallout again, plus TF2), and if you expand your parameters to include sandbox titles, the Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto series provide a wide amount of things to do that don't involve a body count.

However, let's not kid ourselves, I buy these games to kill things. Shooty games are my stress relief, and I have a lot of fun with them. My personal favorite thing to do is finding new ways to kill things. My best examples are trying to find new poison recipes in TES Oblivion, and setting up landmine ambushes in Fallout 3. Or hell, just finding new spots for sniper nests is fun, too.

Now about them all being ugly, I have two suggestions. The first (and most recent,) is Borderlands. It gets a little repetitive and the story is dirt simple (FIND THE VAULT YOU NOOB) but it is a fun game to play, or even just to rent. That's how I found it; I rented it, liked it, bought it when I could afford to. My other suggestion, however, is a little dated. I'm referring to Timesplitters: Future Perfect for PS2. The story mode is fun and funny, between cutscenes taking place with your past/future selves and AI companion antics, T:FP is an excellent example of a shooter done right. And there's more to it; there's a whole host of minigames and medal challenges to unlock new characters, play modes, and weapons for multiplayer (this is the only game I know of that has curling, for example).

There's a lot of fun to be had in video games that you might be limiting yourself from based solely on it being from shooter games. My final suggestion actually comes from my parents, or rather a parenting tool they used on me called "The Two Bite Rule." If, as a child, I was presented with something (usually food) that I didn't think I would like, I was to get at least two bites of it to properly form an opinion about it. It speaks to the success of this rule that I eventually adopted and adapted it for my own use, only buying CDs that had at least two songs on them I liked for example. If you aren't sure about a game, try renting or borrowing it first. Play it for an hour or two to see if you like it. Take it from the best damn cook in The Mohave Wasteland; you could be missing out.

I only really like Halo. I'm not great at this shooting business, and the realistic sims make me feel like some kind of military-wannabe meathead. But Halo's fun, especially with jet-packs.

No. I just posted that at midnight, during a day when I woke up at five.

Also, I'm not really a Gamer. I just play games when I feel like it, and spend the rest of my time posting on forums. that was a joke. mostly.

I like FPS' because they stimulate the little 10 year old soldier (DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT) in me that in turn makes me feel masculine (STOP EFFING THINKING ABOUT IT).

And try Metro 2033, it's a very atmospheric FPS that is well driven by a pretty unique story and aesthetic.
