The people who turn in their Wiis are the ones who thought the only game worth buying was Wii Sports. There are games for almost every taste out for the Wii, just that they're under-publiticized compared to Wii Sports, Mario Kart, etc.

I hope they don't make games require Natal, because I have no intention of getting it, I have played Wii and it sucks. Not to mension I enjoy SITTING DOWN to play my games thank you very much!
Who ever said anything about standing up? What makes you think motion control = standing? I hear this comment a lot from the Wii hate crowd. I personally have never stood up to play a game, unless I got reaaaaaaaaally into it.
Well when I play it at my buddies house, most games don't work right for me unless I am standing, and let's not talk about his low ceiling.

Perhaps a new location would make things a little better? Also, what games were you playing?

Well Mario Tennis on Wii is terrible, so ignore that. Those other ones though should actually work pretty well. Try moving it to a more open area.

To hell with motion sensors. I would never care for such gameplay advancement. The only reason I find acceptable that it exists if it would be a stepping stone to evolve gameplay to the virtual level. Virtual games. Now that's a gameplay innovations I wouldn't mind moving my ass.

Um.... I've only done this MAYBE once in my entire gaming career, and I've never seen anyone ever do it outside of Pro-servers. Even there, they don't do it particularly often.

I'm not worried. Controllers can never really be replaced because they speak the language of video games. You press a button, and you know what it's going to do. That same finesse doesn't really translate to motion-control, ironically enough. oO Plus, when it comes to something like Natal, you don't get any feedback if you've done something right. You wave your arm through the air and you have no idea whether or not it's working until you see the outcome on the screen. Pressing buttons or having controller vibrations are both forms of feedback, and it works.

The peripheral with the most potential this generation is also the one that's the least realized. Am I the only one who played the FPS portions of Time Crisis 4? They're flipping awesome! You get the actual aiming of a light gun game mixed with the controls of an FPS game. Being the first of its kind, it's very rough around the edges, but it's the most significant revolution of this generation. They just need to make the analog sticks and buttons a bit less chintzy and make a lefties gun.

Natal, and the Wii for that matter, stand for innovation, not casual gaming. Unfortunately, in the case of Nintendo, they were blinded by the promises of riches coming from the casual gaming audience. The Wii technology, and possibly even more so with NATAL, could make for some amazing games: they just need to try and integrate it into real games rather than just making a bunch of gimmicky titles. The DS is a good example, actually: games like Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The World Ends with You are prime examples of an innovative concept being used in hardcore gaming rather than casual time-wasters.

Honestly I don't think anyone has anything to be worried about.

Microsoft and Sony already understand that they have the gamer that's interested in FPS and RPG games. As an aside, I'm not going to use Hardcore and Casual here because they're arbitrary, pointless descriptors with meanings on which nobody agrees.

What Microsoft wants here with Natal is a slice of the Nintendo party game audience. There's a market for motion controls, and as it is right now Nintendo is monopolizing it. Big companies, Sony and Microsoft especially, are never ones to let someone else make a dollar that they could be making.

I predict that all in all, "core" gaming isn't going to change all that much. Microsoft and Sony will make weak attempts to steal some of Nintendo's market share, but in the end I think that the next version of the consoles are going to look similar to what we have now, I wouldn't even be surprised if Nintendo drops motion controls for the next generation.

Let's hope that.

The main problem with Natal, as it was with the Wii, is the price. Perfect motion-detection technology would probably go for more than 10,000 a piece. That is just not possible for them.

So what we will get is the budget, cut-corners, inaccurate version of that, which will work, but not that well. We're talking about a technology that the military even hasn't mastered yet, or why are they controlling their remote drones still with a joystick if motion control is so much better....
You only have to look at the Xbox with the red-ring of death, which could be fixed be 8 cents and the disc-shredding drive, fixed by 2 rubber pieces to see this thing has been built with price in mind and not quality. What will make Natal any better in quality? I just don't trust them to do it properly.

The second problem is the error-prone way the input data reaches the in-game character:

With a joystick, the player pushes forward and a simple electronic translates it into imput information

With Natal there is a infrared webcam, noise reduction, face detection and translation process going on.

The controller has 2 fault points, the stick measurement and the translation, while Natal has 4 or more things that could (and will) go wrong.

However I think I'm gonna buy it, first because I need to have every gimmick... and second because if they did it properly and cracked it, it will be awesome. I just don't see it right now.

Motion controls were fun experiment but the technology just isnt there yet and even then the majority of gamers would rather use a normal gamepad than wave their arms around. I literally haven't touched my wii (except to brush dust off) in months.

I think its an amazing piece of technology.... but i really hope its not successfull as it will kind of force gamers who just want to unwind or relax to be waving their arms around like a clot =P
i think if people wanted to do that.. they wouldve bought a Nintendo Wii. in fact, thats the soul reason i dont particularly consider the Wii as part of the 'console wars'.
to me its just the 360 versus the ps3... and the Wii is just the rather gimmicky thing that makes a lot of money come christmas time.

Alright, wise-guy.

So how do I aim at an enemy while strafing to the left, then stop to switch weapons, then jump?

(though I've done the aforementioned in TF2 many times and I don't consider myself a decent player)

Gaming is, and always has been a hobby for people who want to wind back and relax. Novelties like Natal and Wii and MotionWand will come and go as "innovations" but will die out eventually after the fad ends. They get under utilized and are just purely for games with no depth at all, like wii sports for example.

If these can be utilized for something a bit more than just simple mini games, they could become a new media. The way they stand now, if you're buying a console for Wii-Sports or Natal or whatever, you've picked the wrong hobby as you will get bored of it.

If you want to sit back and relax and play some games with real depth, then play real games. If you're not finding those appealing but instead would like to play the mini games Nintendo and other companies market, do one of two things. Go out and play some real sports (trust me this will actually get you fit unlike wii-fit), or go on the internet, find a website like newgrounds, and play a load of free flash games on there.

I don't want to read through 5 pages of responses so I'll just throw my 2 cents into the ring. Firstly, I think you are absolutely correct. The first console of this generation I bought was the Wii, and I enjoyed it at first but now it just sits there collecting dust. It led me to buy a 360 and a PS3 because you can't be a core gamer and simply own a Wii, it just doesn't maintain itself as a gaming system. Once I learned of project Natal I knew that core gamers are basically going to be phased out in coming years. Nintendo turned their backs on the core market in favour of the casual market, it won't be long before MS and Sony follow suit.
