Alright, I've been wondering this for a while. A few months ago, my 360 got the RROD. However, I've noticed something. There have been instances where I've gotten the red rings, but they weren't the ACTUAL red rings... if that makes any sense.

You know the two controller ports in the front? Well, everytime I plug a controller into the TOP port, my 360 gets the red rings. That occured a month before the next problem.

A month later, I'm playing MK VS DC with my friend. Everything if fine and dandy. My friend's controller shuts off and I reach for the connect button on my 360. My finger twitches and hits the power button. Well, I turn it back on and BOOM, the red rings show up.

After a little fiddling around, I noticed a pattern close to that of the top controller port. Everytime I plug my AC cables in, it red rings. When the cables are out, it runs perfectly.

I've experimented with 4 of my friends AC cables, each on gave my 360 the red rings. Now, my question is this. Is it just the PORT that's fried, or is it the 360 itself?

I had a similar problem where my xbox refuse to output any video so that everything worked fine (actually went into party chat with friends using the sound ques), but I couldn't see anything. I thought it was a AV cable problem, but to my disgust after buying a new one, it wasn't.

A few days later I get RRoD.

And I almost had to pay to get it fixed.

The reason why 360s RROD more often than not is from the heat melting the circut boards. What it sounds like you are experiencing is a freak occurance. If you can still play games after the red ring flashes, then it's not RROD.

so basically they need to put in more fans?

The rings don't flash untill I plug my AV cable into the port.

I hope you realize that there are several types of red rings that can appear on your 360, each one means a different type of error. RROD is the three lit except the top right one. I'm betting you got some red but not the RROD.

I bought a laptop fan that has the ability to use batteries or a USB port, still having my 360 from launch day, never red ringed. I've also taken precautions, basically treat it like a computer, occasionally take a can of compressed air and give it a good clean etc.

Yes, or they could add a better heatsink to the processor. Given the size of the power supply, it seems to me anyways, that the system isn't very efficent at using electricity. I believe that is more or less where the problem ultimately lies because the more efficent something is, the less heat is gives off. The fans and heatsinks will do the job just the same though.

The rings don't flash untill I plug my AV cable into the port.
But does the system still work? The red LEDs only mean something if the console doesn't work properly. If they are flashing and you can still play, I don't see what the issue is.

Im ive read someplace it is the chips under the board that have the problem because insteadof using a proper heatsink they used these little stick on things that look like bandaids... or something along those lines...
