I don't think holeing up is part of the game I believe you move from relativly secure location to location locking doors and such behind you to slow your enemies but I doubt you ever barricade your house and try to wait it out(The rescue/evac part is excepted from this as obiously you have to wait for help to arrive.

Left For Dead I believe is objective based - move from safe house to safe house until finally reaching your extraction point. There will be periodic 'barricade' moments where you have to survive a certain number of enemies / for a certain length of time. Everyone who has played it seems to think it's awesome. The delay seems to have been caused by either

(a) getting the zombie side of things working (playing as a zombie I mean), or

(b) finishing work on the 360 version, for a simultaneous release.

In all honesty, I just want to play the damn thing.

nope, not really

dead rising plays more like Smash TV or Dynasty Warriors than a Zombie movie

(and, no, not 28 days later, because that was a rage virus; they were not undead.)
From what I remember the enemies in L4D are 'infected' rather than zombies... at least, that's what the developers used to tout them as.

Anyway, sadly this is definitely not the perfect zombie/infected game for die hard fans of the genre, but did anyone really expect to get that?

I couldn't agree more with CrazyBuddha, when I saw the recent demos online Left4Dead was nearly indistinguishable with counter strike in terms of gameplay. How are the zombies going to be frightening when you can run upwards of 15 mph? More importantly, it seems Left4Dead is to good for ammo conservation, a trademark of every passable horror game to date. Kicking ass and chewing bubble gum is all well and good, but Survival horror games are great because of a lack of machine gun toting bad-asses. Left4dead isn't even really a zombie game really, it's more of a shoot em up run and gunner with a few waltzing corpses to ensnare Romero fans.

Ok bubba, so maybe the game is basically CS with a makeover and about 700 zombies running at your ass, but what gets me so pissed off is that this is basically a survive the waves game online. But in usual valve style the designs going to be great. So some twat is controlling the scenes. It will appeal to anyone who has played Zombie Survival (a mod for Garry's Mod) almost indefinietly because the fact is, you play a human then you die and become a zombie. There is even a mod that makes Left4Dead playable in Garry's Mod and that is scary. You have to conserve your ammo, be a good shooter, and stick together while trying to stay alive from a poison. What left4dead is, basically the garry's mod version without the poison part and it's just a doom clone with zombies, multiplayer and excellent design.

but I don't think the game is intended to be 100% survival horror. I thought it was supposed to bridge survival horror and tactical FPS... like F.E.A.R.

I think the games major shortcoming is its too one sided. The Zombies are quite easily more powerful than the humans, and noone will want to play as the humans.
I disagree after playing ZPS.

Thing is, if your playing it right you should only be engaging when you have to, also the focus was on run 'n gun combat, you're supposed to make it out as fast as possible

ZPS?
Zombie Panic Source.

Also, Left 4 Dead's main hook is the coop play, not the versus mode. That's reason enough to play as a human. Probably won't be even touching the deathmatch part of it.

When was the last time zombie horror action blended smoothly with fast paced shooter combat and managed to retain the feel of a genuinely frightening walking dead gore-fest?

Run 'n Gun combat is running at/around opponents firing as many bullets into their hitbox as possible, in hopes of making their own aim more difficult. It is not running away while gunning, and is not a particularly fast combat strategy. Stopping and aiming ends things much more quickly, though is also more of a challenge, which is why people run and gun so much.

However, it is not only important whether or not the games combat mechanics fit run n' gunning. If you can run and gun, but only have a revolver with 14 bullets and no ammunition in the vicinity, it's still not a viable idea. This is all theoretical, I know absolutely nothing about Left 4 Dead. Hence...

I've seen so many videos that I don't know what to think of the game anymore, so I said "fuck it" and I'm just gonna buy it, and if it sucks, well the woe is me I've wasted 40 bucks.
You could use my plan, and invoke the ancient art of metacritic after the game is released to decide if the game is worth looking-into/buying/renting.

holing up in a building gets old fast, trust me, everyone ends up with cabin fever and decides to start mic spamming. THat's why most zombie mods suck, and that's why left4dead won't.
