Note that if your way/s involve roms and emulators I'm not sure that the day/night feature works on a rom. I'm sure someone will know better than I, but I just recall a number of GBA pokemon game roms which didn't work initially as they came up with an error messagestating the internal battery had died. This was fixed by a patch however so possibly something for Gold/Silver exists as well.

Not to act like I have a stick up my arse, but I'd say avoid blue/red. As much as I used to love the originals I can't say they have aged very well. Go with the remakes instead, they are plenty more comfortable to play. My personal favorites are Gold/Silver, but as someone said, your only option there is second hand, and they only last for a set amount of time before the cartridge battery wears out.

I'd go w/ LeafGreen or FireRed because they're new enough that they don't seem outdated, which is something the original games (Red/Blue/Yellow) fail to overcome unless you play for nostalgia.

Gold and Silver. Most content, much-needed improvements on the old Poke formula, improved graphics, some neat Pokemon to catch and the whole night/day thing.

well see that's the thing. when you go from the early games to the later ones it's not so bad. Going in reverse order isn't easy. I love Zelda games for the most part, but I can't see myself playing through Zelda 1 again, I've just seen so much advancment. So it's probably best for me to start at the begining.

Glitches are cool said:
It's easiest to go with the earliest, before all the wacked out mechanics of the game, such as EV, Hidden Power calculations, and a bunch of stuff that's unneeded to really enjoy the game, was put into said games. Red or Blue, but it'll be hard to find those these days.
EVs and all those other things were in Red and Blue too. Those stats just weren't discovered until years after people stopped playing those games. Not that they are needed to finish the normal game, and pokemon battling was more fun when people didn't know about them.

I have to agree with Pokemon Red/Blue though, they have 150 pokemon to catch, 151 if you use a bug to catch Mew, about 12 towns to visit and everything is very simple.

Do not play red and blue, while they are the originals they suck. Gold and Silver where easily the best, two continents to explore, unique legendary pokemon, 16 gym battles and you evn get to vs red.

Seriously pokemon Gold is the way to go, If I ever buy a pokemon game again it would only be a remake of Gold or Silver.

Crystal is similar to the two, so I guess that counts as well

If you want easiest to get around the world. DO NOT pick Red/Blue.
Until you get the bike, you have to walk everywhere.
Gold/silver onwards, you get the running shoes.
However, Red/Blue had the best Pokemon, so i'd go for fire red/leaf green

I grew up with the originals, but I've got to say that if you want the best of the early versions, gold/silver are the way to go. Red and blue are great in their own way, but you'll quickly find that they're the best to some people here purely through nostalgia. Gold/silver has many more features, almost twice as many pokemon, and two continents to explore. In fact, with gold/silver, you pretty much get blue/red free through the second continent.

Red/Blue/Yellow: are the easiest, and shortest games in the series and is nothing but the fundamentals of gameplay in the Pokemon franchise. Capture, battle, collect. Nothing more, nothing less. Hardly any extra features or sidequests. Your goal is to defeat the Elite Four, and become the Pokemon Master.

Gold/Silver/Crystal: added on many excellent features, such as night and day, two new elemental types, held items, more things to do/see, breeding, etc. They're all very good games. However, they have battery life, and I have two Silver versions who have both hit the bucket and will NOT save anymore. If anything, second generation should be the games you do NOT pick.

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: everything carried over, and there are some nice added features, but due to the battery life issue, night and day got the boot. This is where the battle system got a little more complex (natures, EVs, etc), and they refined it by adding many extra things like double battles. Pokemon contests now exists, which are something a little different to get into. Also, the best thing ever till you get your bike was added, RUNNING SHOES.

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: added refinement to the battle system, refinement of the Pokemon contests, and other things across the board. Day and night returns without any hampering on battery life as well. Though not too many things were added, it improves on everything, imo. It also gives you the most bang for your buck, as it has everything from previous titles, a bigger region, and just more to do. Plus, you get wifi, which can make the gameplay experience even better.

It's harder to go back and play games once you play the ones that just came out, but it's hard to even find those said games at all (unless you count emulators). Also, not to shit on everyone's nostalgia and childhood, but Red and Blue suck now. This is coming from someone who was sickeningly obsessed with Pokemon back in '99 and had that obsession die before Crystal came out. The newer ones are better, and my absolute love for it back then would not cloud my appreciation for what it is now. Just. Better.
If you really want to experience the first games, get FireRed or LeafGreen.

Fire Red/Leaf Green, or Silver/Gold.

FR/LG were remakes of the original with colour, so all the classic Pokemon and characters.

Silver/Gold has some neat innovations over Red/Blue/Yellow (the 3 previous games), most of which oddly got dropped since some were really good. Had a few more monsters and 2 countries to explore, though I'll admit Kanto (the original country) was very stripped in Silver/Gold down versus Red/Blue.
