theres harldy any guns over here (thank god) so i used to have a crowbar next to bed. now i practice kung fu, so i dont need it anymore.
I wouldn't use a close quarter weapon against a home invader because that wouldn't give me any advantage, and I don't believe in keeping firearms in the house. As a rather paranoid individual I prefer to protect my home using more unconventional methods. I'll just say I have a wicked sense of humor, and whoever breaks into my house first will quickly realize this.
There's a baseball bat in my room. And a pair of nun-chucks. But I'm not scared anybody is going to break in. We live in a secluded area of a peaceful village.
I've got two short swords in my closet. Those generally should be good enough. At the very least, I also have 2 dogs that, though cuddly and friendly, could also be distracting enough for me to get the upper hand on an intruder...

I've got a couple of blades dotted about the house - Not really for defence or offence but would be handy if ever needed...
My mates house has been broken in twice before, the 1st time he woke up with a guy half way climbing through his window. So now he has one of the biggest fucking kitchen knives you will ever see under his pillow lol.
I have an ornate dagger by my bed, the blade is still stainless steel and sharpened. I don't actually keep it there for defense, it's in a case but if it worst came to worst I could certainly use it. Also have a sword in the closet, though since I have narrow hallways its not the best weapon.

Edit: I'd like to add that I never intend to actually shoot anyone with this gun, or any for that matter. It is for the defense of my home, not to be used aggressively.
My my mum used to have several large knives and two hammers ready at her beside. The police knew she had them, and knew what she intended but never moved them.
I'm not afraid of robbery. I live in a quiet neighborhood and have those fake anti-break in alarm stickers over my windows.
And then again, half of the people in my household are very light sleepers. If someone tried to break in from the back, I'd hear it and wake up.
Although I do have my old bokken and a few broken legs from my old table that I was going to use for a certain project but never got to. Any of these objects would make pretty good clubs, and I'm used to swinging things around.
And I live right next by the kitchen, so I have a knife rack available within a second of me getting out of my bed. And I could use them, too.
So, yeah. I sleep with a locked door, have a number of various clubs of different nature (bokken since it's a glorified stick, table legs, metal tennis things although they wouldn't do) right by my bed, and a lot of modified weapons a wall away from me.
Oh ya, and obviously enough the phone and the cellphone are within a hand reach away from me, and it should probably be your first reaction to someone breaking in unless they get scared away and run out the moment they hear you get out of bed or what not.
That should be good enough, but then again I've never had someone break into my house/apartment in either Russia or Canada.
