I have not played an RPG to match FF10 yet... what would you suggest?

If you feel that FF 10 is the greatest RPG you've ever played, you could branch out into Baldur's Gate 2, or play something like Tales of Symphonia. (Or Vesperia)

Well FFX is filed on my list of "Worst games I've ever played" so you might want to try any of the earthbound/mother games. They're even higher on the list. But if you want RPGs I actually like, try fallout 3 or oblivion.

Persona 4 is a JRPG that i think you will like a lot.

If you also like WRPGs try Fallout 3 and Mass effect.

Oh for God sake, he quite clearly stated he liked FFX, saying "OMG play a real RPG" isn't helping, you're just making yourself look like an arsehole. If you quite obviously don't like the same genre in a game suggestion thread, then piss off, don't be a twat about it.

To be honest, I'm not too sure about this gen, but I can definetely re-recommend Shadow Hearts.

And ummm... Valkyria Chronicles isn't an RPG, but I thought it had a similar... vibe? Either way, it was pretty good.

I liked FFXII infinitely more than FFX. Tidus is just plain annoying, and XII's combat is the most engaging and fun battle system I've ever tried. The story is also better than X, in my opinion; it just is more global/political than character-focused. Plus, some of X's plot twists were just plain dumb.

Past that, you should definitely try out (in order of how much I like them):
-Mass Effect
-Any Shin Megami Tensei game. Like seriously, they're all amazing. On PS2: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, Devil Summoner 1 and 2, Nocturne, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4
-Fallout 3 and Oblivion, as have been suggested, though they're honestly more addicting than they are good games.
-Dragon Quest series, Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud series
-Any other FF game
-Suikoden series, Skies of Arcadia
-If you have a PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls
-IF you have a DS: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, The World Ends With You, the Mario and Luigi series
-Paper Mario series
-Knights of the Old Republic I and II.

There are a TON more, but that should probably do for now. Enjoy!

EDIT: Even though you're looking for something Gen 7, last generation really isn't that much of a downgrade, particularly since you love FFX, a last-generation game.

EDIT 2: Also, I have to say, Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360) is probably the most FFX-like game I've played other than FFX itself. It's turn-based and features current-generation graphics, along with a very engaging storyline. You'd enjoy it.

Chrono Trigger and Mass Effect are my two personal favorites for structured RPGs. For more open-world stuff, try Oblivion.

Let me illustrate something: I hate turn-based games with a flaming passion, and Chrono Trigger is still more or less my favorite RPG of all time and one of my top five favorite games. That's how good I think it is.

Shoot. Your preference for turn-based combat and realistic character models excludes my first recommendation: Tales of Symphonia.
Screw that, recommend it anyway. It's a great RPG. Tales of Vesperia, as well.

And if you have a PSP, Tales of Eternia. It's fun, and the combat reminds me of Maple Story.

I would suggest that you give up, to be perfectly honest. It would seem that X is going to be the pinnacle of the FF franchise, and I haven't seen anything from other developers that looks as good. Note that I say as good. I've played plenty of good RPGs in the same vein since, but none that were as good as FFX. (This is, of course, only my opinion. If you disagree, feel free to pm me, so I can ignore you on a one-to-one basis!)

If you are willing to go with something slightly different, Fallout 3 is pretty damn good. Doesn't have the turn-based combat or beautiful cut-scenes, but it is really good.

If you're very, very patient and enjoy a good, thought provoking plot, try The Witcher.

If you're not so patient, try Mass Effect.

If you don't like space, try Fallout 2.

I don't think you ever played a good RPG.

Go play Fallout and Earthbound.
BAM!
I gotta agree with him though, Turn Based combat blows. Once you find an RPG wit an awesome combat system you'll never go back to that shitty Turn Based crap again.
I third this. Although turn based is still okay when done well (such as Golden Sun, one you may want to try if you haven't already) it does get stale after a while. To add to the list of non-turn based, give the Tales series a try. It has deep story lines and a really well done combat system.

If you like turn-based combat then Golden Sun is amazing. Also, for something different try Tales of Symphonia.

EDIT: Wow, ninja'd by the above poster.

The first two Shadow Hearts games are fantastic and some of my favorite games. Don't bother with the third one, though. It was just awful.
