I don't think you ever played a good RPG.

Go play Fallout and Earthbound.
BAM!
I gotta agree with him though, Turn Based combat blows. Once you find an RPG wit an awesome combat system you'll never go back to that shitty Turn Based crap again.
turn based is fun dude its not shitty at all it needs strategy

OT: if you are going for a battle style similar to the CTB of ffX try tactics and for story try XII

But 10 was the only one bad enough to need a sequel.
Yet 7 got a film, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, and a few other stuff which I can't recall. Some sequels, some prequels, and 7 was still a damn good game.

Personally, I loved 10, and I would recommend Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia. Lost Oddysey is turn-based combat, and a very good game, ToV is not the best, but its enjoyable and not afraid to make you laugh.
I really do love VII tho
it may be old school, or maybe bandwagoning as some may see it, but it was just the one that truly got to me (like I cared about the characters)

Mass Effect
Fallout 3 (which you must get on PC if you can, as the mods improve it tenfold)
Morrowind (same as above)
Earthbound (need a SNES emulator for that)
Mother 3 (there is a GBA ROM translation available)

Play real RPGs, not that Final Fantasy garbage.

You've rattled my thoughts. To be perfectly honest FFX was my favourite of all Final Fantasies that I've played, FFX-2 was the worst...

But I am still searching for a turn based RPG to rise to the ranks like it aswell.

If FFX is your primary barometer for quality I'd recommend Lost Odyssey (360), it's got a similar emotional 1-2 Punch with less irritating Tidus. Also the Battle System is a bit similar and the production values are comprable.

The original Fallout, or Fallout 3? I have 3 and am just starting to get into it. I don't doubt the first 2 Fallouts are terrific, but I'm spoiled by Gen 7 production values and would like to play something that came out within the last couple of years.
So you're ignoring some of the best RPGs out there (Not to mention ones that wont set you back 60-70 bucks) because the graphics aren't as good? Thats a lot like disregarding a good book in favor of a shit one because you don't like the cover art.

Anywho my recommendations:
Fallout 1-3
The Elder Scrolls series, though morrowind and oblivion are the best so far.
Basically everything Bioware has come out with, KotOR, Jade Empire, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Mass effect and so on.
The tales series, Symphonia and Vesperia have already been mentioned but their all fairly good.
The Diablo series.
Icewind Dale 1 and 2
The Witcher
Mount & Blade
Dungeon Siege 1 and 2
Gothic 1 and 2, #3 was apparently very good also but I've never had a chance to play it
Planetscape
Bloodlines, more then a bit buggy though.
Arcanum
Wizardry 6-8
Albion
System Shock 1 and 2
Deus Ex
Golden sun 1 and 2 (get both, #2 isn't as much a sequel to the first as a second half)
Crono Trigger and Cross
The Mario RPGs
Ultima 5 (Not played the rest so no clue if their any good or not)

If you can't find at least one game in there you like as much or more then FF10, I will buy a big fancy Victorian style womens hat and eat it.

final fantasy 7-9 are great, legend of dragoon, chrono cross and chrono trigger.
the age of the GOOD turn based rpg is pretty much over so you need to look back to find good ones.

I'll throw another recommendation for Tales of Symphonia (Not it's sequal, that thing doesn't exist, hear me?), more to that game than you first realize when you start it but it's worth the time put in. Very different tones/game-play from the Final Fantasy series though so be prepared.

And you have never played an RPG with a good turn based combat system so please be quiet.

Go to Amazon or eBay and buy some Shin Megami Tensei games (like Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2) and Baten Kaitos.

Fallout 1 and 2
Earthbound
Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, (maybe VIII), IX
Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars
Chrono Trigger
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale 1 and 2

Played all of those and they PWN. But basically if you're looking for a better RPG than FFX, then most any other RPG will do.
My personal favourite JRPG is FFIX and Fallout 2 is my favourite WRPG.
Yes Fallout 1 and 2 were WAY better than 3.

I'd recommend Neverwinter Nights 2. It's an old game but brilliant one. Good storyline and gameplay but it's not turn based.

See, I'd suggest you go with Final Fantasy VII or IX... But I think that Star Ocean - Til The End of Time is a good rpg, even if it does take a few new approaches with the genre itself.

Anybody else who hated FF10 and wishes to insult it said:
FF10 is the greatest rpg I have ever played and the only other ones that I believe come close are KH2, Golden Sun 1 and 2, and Fable 1 and 2.

BTW, no flaming intended or anything like that, just saying that I am in full support of the awesomeness of FF10, as a matter of fact, even after I bought my PS3 (which I am pissed doesn't play PS2 games, if anyone wants to tell me how to get it to it would be much appreciated) I went out and bought FF10 (again, I lost my last copy) because I thought it was better than any PS3 game I had or had seen.

Your search is pointless until Final Fantasy 13 is released, There is no game greater than FF10 on the market.
