And the fact that you read an entire Eternal Sonata walkthrough without owning the game.
Yeah, but I haven't played it, so I can't really say if I liked it or not, can I?
I offered to lend you mine [Insert Retarded Face Here]

I think there are some games that you kinda have to play tbh, you know so you know about them, that's just how you expand your horizons.
I've played loads of games, old and new, some games I've liked others I haven't but that doesn't matter because now I know and I can talk about them.

I think it's pretty essential to play at least one game of each of the really big franchises even if it's just once and you end up hating it, giving something a chance is a great way to enjoy new things, but if you've not enough money to go out and buy consoles and games then you don't need to go out of your way, just consider something new every now and again and you'll probably know more for it

I havnt touched any of the Half-Life games
So, then you play TF2 a lot or just bought the orange box for nothing? TF2 is a really popular game, yet I find it incredibly boring.

Well, I bet that you have played more then you think. For example, TF2 is a major game, and unless you bought Orange Box for no reason, you have played that. Probably a list of other major games as well, since I think most of us are guilty of imagining that games we enjoy are a bit more, "Underground" then they are, for the cheap indie cred.

Anyways, yes, if a major games seems to appeal to you, try it. However much one may whine that their disliked franchise of choice is overrated (And again, we all, or most, do this to some extent), very popular games got very popular for a reason. They are doing something right, and you might as well explore that. If you're actually looking for advice...well...very popular games tend to polarize people, so its hard to get down to the nitty gritty of pros and cons without descending into bickering. I can try though.

Play Portal if you like puzzles and puzzles solving, as well as black humor. The major problem with it is that it is too short, but since you own it anyways, its not like it would be an unwise investment.

Half Life Series is a real, "Gamers game". All the pieces fit together perfectly, level design, challenge, set pieces, pacing: its like a perfectly designed gourmet entree. Of course, if you just don't like the entree to begin with, it doesn't matter how well made it is. Half Life is a shooter with light puzzles, the story is solid enough but not exactly extensive, the weapons arn't over the top in power, yet it also isn't a terribly realistic, sim-ish shooter. If those are things you're looking for, maybe Half Life isn't your thing.

Bah, this would take to long, and I'm only really an expert on the Valve games on your list.

It's obvious that you play what you want, the only thing that could be a problem with that is that you will have less to say or understand if a conversation/discussion about gaming you were interested in and diverts to one of those games.
Otherwise the only weird thing I see is owning those games that you don't play, or plan to. Seams like money thrown to the garbage.

I wouldn't say play ocarina at this stage, It'd be like recommending doom: unparalled at the time, but all the best bits have been ripped off for years now, so it won't feel as completely new and fresh, which is what made the whole thing so awesome.

Twilight princess is definitely worth a look as it's basically a modernised version of ocarina.
Majora's mask is probably more intersting than ocarina too, it holds up a lot better, and there's some really genius parts to that one. Plus, it's the only 3-d zelda even remotely challenging. Not everyone gets it, but it hasn't been ripped off as blatantly for that reason too, so you could find a gem.

(wind waker is also really underrated, though I'm sure my facade as someone who isn't a zelda fanboy is quickly evaporating, so I'll leave it at that.)

Seriously, im starting to think im pretty damn weird.
I havnt played much of all the very popular games
I havnt touched Portal yet I own the orange box
I havnt touched any of the Half-Life games
I havnt played Shadow Of The Colossus
I havnt played many zelda games (Oot, Majoras Mask for example)
I havnt played Oblivion past 5 minutes after the sewers
And I havnt played many other often talked about games.
You want my (incredibly biased) opinion?

Portal is good fun, but the jokes have been run into the ground somewhat by the internet community. I'd play this one - it's not a long game.

I love Half-Life, but hey - it's not for everyone and you may find some of the game mechanics a bit dated. Play Portal first and if you liked it give HL 2 a go.

I've not played Shadow of the Colossus either, so yeah...

I've only played Zelda on the Game Boy. I don't think I'm qualified to comment here either.

I hated Oblivion. Hated hated hated it.

And there you go. That's all I can really say on this thread.

You own the Orange Box but you haven't played Portal or the Half Life games?
What was the point of that purchase?
TF2.
TF2 is a good game but it's not worth buying the Orange Box and playing one fifth of it. If you've got Portal and the Half Life games there, why do you need people to convince you to play them?
Just try them out! It won't kill you.

Well in my opinion , "major" games are worth plying, As long as they games aren't Considered "major" because of fanboys. I liked Zelda OOT , but that was the last Zelda game i liked.

Question : What type of games do you like ? FPS , RPG , JRPG , survival horror, Horror , Adventure , Strategy , Fighting, Multiplaye, Single Player, Racing, Flying , Sandbox , Spectical Fighter?

Just to know what to recommend. I have a Love for JRPG and survival horror, so Id recommend Silent hill 1-4 , Resident Evil 4 , Star ocean and a couple of Final fantasies if thats your thing. Oblivion was Great too. Flawed (deeply) but Great

Don't worry about not having played Majoras Mask. I dropped it after a few hours, it's the worst Zelda game I have played.

I love Portal and the Half Life games, so I'd recommend them. If you don't like shooters, I still recommend Portal.

Shadow of the Colossus however... Regardless of what genres you prefer, I strongly urge you to play it. It's one of the best games ever made in my opinion.

Some "major games" were only "major" when they were released. The simple fact of the matter is, people in their twenties and below will most likely enjoy a round on CoD 6 than the Zelda storyline.

More recent "major games", however, well. Honestly, there are only four reasons I buy a game: It's ridiculously cheap, I played it before and liked it, it's a sequel to a game I loved... or it was just an impulse buy. If you think you're going to like the game, go for it. I doubt you'd have much to lose.

[sup]I used waaaay too many quotation marks there. All I can think of now is Dr Evil saying 'Fire the "SPACE LASER"'[/sup]

Honestly there are alot of games that are more popular than people give them credit for, like Dead Space for example.
Whuh? Didn't DP only just sell enough copies to break even? I doubt it was that popular.

Portal is an alright game, but mostly known for internet memes...

Half-Life, well you'd be surprised how many people haven't played those games.

Shadow of the Colossus isn't exactly major, more just popular with the internet, not so much the masses.

Zelda... quite honestly not everybody's cup of tea. I've only played Ocarina of Time myself and not even completed it.

Oblivion, can't really say much, I played it a bit and did not like it at all. You either love it or hate it really.

I think it's good to avoid being overly mainstream. It means you get to experience games that a lot of others don't so much, and sometimes discover some great gems.
