Sure. It's one of the best militaries in the world apparently. One thing though, do you have the temperament for it? Because if you're no good at taking orders, don't expect to learn.

Also, whats the other country you have citizenship in?

Also, no military is glorious. Even if its nationalistic pride and everything, it's still just a job.
A group of people who will lay down their own lives for the good of the country and its people gets to be called glorious, or another less rediculous word with a similar meaning. Leave it to a bunch of videogame nerds who do nothing but sit on there asses all day to decide what is what.

And from what I understand, he was joking when he called his military glorious.
By this logic the Nazi's were glorious, so are all the iraqi insurgents. Hell Japan's attack on pearl harbor sure was glorious, so was America nuking them.

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once.

Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."

-Albert Einstein
The Nazis war victories were glorious. Pearl Harbour was glorious.

Nuking Japan wasn't glorious, in fact it is strange that you quote Einstein, since it was a scientific triumph.

PS. Iraqi insurgents are not glorious, they just kill shitloads of civilians...

PPS. While I have great respect for Einstein, I don't agree with his pacifism. I can understand why he was a pacifist though, he had to leave Germany 'cos of those fecking Nazis, who had a VERY warlike ideaology, featured heavily in their propaganda.

I know, a Finnish sharpshooter also got the highest amount of confirmed kills ever. Over 500.

It's also remarkable that most of these kills were using Ironsight and not scope at ranges of 800 metres in the torrential snow. Scopes were widely disliked because they fogged up and light reflecting off them could give away the shooter's position.
That man would be Simo Hayha. Exept with dots on the As. I met the man in person in 1993. His actual kill count during about 100 days was over 700, with the famous 500 sniper kills with the Mosin Nagant rifle, and about 200 with his Suomi- SMG. (the one that the ruskies copied in with their pphs 41).

I could write an entire book about the misconseptions about the winter war, but I shall compress it slightly: Soviets fucked up, Finns got lucky and lotsa people died. Also, Njet Molotov.

Finland has a military? This time I am not joking like with Canadian version of this tread.
This time I really am surprised.
If you really are serious, I suggest you go and browse something like wikipedia for a while. Why would you think Finland DOESN'T have an army? Odd.

Best of luck in your endeavours, unless of course we end up fighting each other.
I don't think that's even possible, two EU countries are not likely to go boom on each other. Also, Finalnd is very close to joining NATO.

So in a confusing realization that I have no idea where my life is going (I realized this somewhere between my 300th hour of Team Fortress 2 and my presence at the midnight release for Modern Warfare 2), I decided to take advantage of my dual citizenship in Finland and join it's glorious military. I sent in my pledge the other day and I should be shipped out in 6 weeks. My question is this: Do you, the Escapists, think it was the right choice?

edit: Since my remark about the military being "glorious" has sparked controversy over the merits of nationalism, I'd like to state that, Nationalism, to me, is sort of a joke, so i figured it'd be amusing to put a nationalist spin on the sentence. It was never my intention to start a political debate.
Finnish army trained armoured brigadier talking here.
Good for you. It is a good place to grow and learn something about yourself. I served 2 years and got officer training. Helped me later in life a lot. Don't worry about the physical side of things, anyone in reasonable condition will pull through. What's your other nationality, btw?

ummmmm............... if you don't die then maybe it is the right choice for you anyway. But just to clarify the army just makes me feel sick in my country they really do love to spew propaganda, but then again anyone with power can do what they like.

How should I know if it's the right choice for you? It's not like I know every detail of you and your life.

They are glorious, and we should fear them:

Seriously, this war has been posted about in this thread so many times, and still no one posted this picture? I am ashamed of you Escapist.

So you joined the military because you like playing video games?
I've seen similar posts to this. There are other reasons I joined the military, but the most major reason is I figured it would give me some direction in my life. my being an abid gamer made me realize that maybe I should hold up to some responsibilies that don't involve teabagging 8 year olds over the internet.

Army is my backup plan if I fail my exams. Also since I love my country to an extent fighting for it would be an honour:)

So good choice? Possibly.

I support your decision. If it's anything like the american military it's a good place to get on the job training and discipline yourself into being a more disirable employee in the future.

Where exactly do the Finns go? As far as I'm aware they are appossed to the War in Iraq and don't have ground troops in Afganistan. I'd assume you'd be part of the awesomelly named "Finnish Defence Force" (which sounds like a superhero squad); which would mean hanging around in a soggy barracks all day looking cool.

EDIT: Actually, you might be send to Kovosko, or Chad.

yeah, sure it's a good choice, Finland is probably one of the least aggressive nations in the world and they have like only 5 guys in Afghanistan plus you get to live on Suomenlinna :D

Possibly a bit of a rushed decision. I don't know terribly much about Finland, but in Canada those that sighn up for active duty get several months of training, and then have at least 4 years as a tour. I can understand wanting to do something with your life, particularly since I'm in the process of applying here in Canada right now, but I wouldn't jump from really likes to play vidya gaems straight to wasting life.

Just no. I dought you're even half strong or average with 300hr's of TF2 and having "no idea where your life is going"

The military is a serious business, not another video game.

Before you say I'm being sarcastic, I'm not. You said it yourself.

The Finnish were incredible in WWII, basically farmers holding their own against hordes of Russians (until you got overrun, but when you look at the size of Russia's army it was inevitable). Oh, and you had him on your side, which makes you awesome:

But how the military is today, I have no idea.

To answer your question, I am a United States citizen also.

Finnish military isn't what it used to be, atleast that's what they say in the media. People whine how everyones fat, has poor fitness and so on. Of course this isn't the case with all people but more and more people get rejected when they can't run over 2500 meters in cooper test (12 minutes to run as far as you can). Sure everyone was hardcore 60 years ago when they were wrestling with *cough polar cough* bears but people have gotten sloppier. Still the accomplishments in Winter War should be respected and so on but no one should think that Finland will always have some kind of overpowered army. On a side note the, I guess you could say legendary, finnish sniper was Simo Häyhä or as the russians called him, The White Death.

I'm finnish too if you didn't figure it out yet and pleace don't flame me for this. That's just what my excercise techer keeps telling us in school >.<

Then I think you made a good decision. I figure two things can happen: you end up really liking the military, in which case, congratulations!--now you have direction in your life. Or, after your term you decide it's really not for you, you've still learned discipline and probably some other useful trades (I'm assuming like most small modern armies, every Finnish soldier learns two or three jobs) that can only benefit you if you end up in another job or in higher education.

Good luck!
