our military is glorious, AND WE MUST ALL FIGHT FOR ETERNAL GLORY!..... sorry about thatFurburt said:Sure. It's one of the best militaries in the world apparently. One thing though, do you have the temperament for it? Because if you're no good at taking orders, don't expect to learn.
Also, whats the other country you have citizenship in?
Also, no military is glorious. Even if its nationalistic pride and everything, it's still just a job.
This here is about what I was about to say. It won't be amazing, but it will surely give you some time to think about your future, as everybody else tell you what to do now. I am though, a bit interested to know why you chose the Finnish army, instead of the US one (you said you were a US citizen as well)?Blimey said:If you think its the right thing to do, then its the right thing to do. I don't think the military is "glorious" in the sense that people will crowd around you to cast flowers at your feet.-- Then I remembered that I'm horribly out of shape, and I can't survive on no sleep, and I'm a massive loser. So I decided against the army.
Don't sweat it, scandinavian militaries are more "civil" (haha) than fx. the US and you only serve for 6-12 months initially, as far as I understand. if nothing else, it'll be something to talk about.mrtenk said:So in a confusing realization that I have no idea where my life is going (I realized this somewhere between my 300th hour of Team Fortress 2 and my presence at the midnight release for Modern Warfare 2), I decided to take advantage of my dual citizenship in Finland and join it's glorious military. I sent in my pledge the other day and I should be shipped out in 6 weeks. My question is this: Do you, the Escapists, think it was the right choice?
edit: Since my remark about the military being "glorious" has sparked controversy over the merits of nationalism, I'd like to state that, Nationalism, to me, is sort of a joke, so i figured it'd be amusing to put a nationalist spin on the sentence. It was never my intention to start a political debate.
Its not an official thing, but when you apply for a job and you have military in your resume your chances of getting hired are much much higher.Pipotchi said:Really people who are ex military get priority employment? is that a Finnish thing cos it isnt true in the US and the UK hence the massive over representation of Ex-armed forces in the unemployed and homeless sectors.Wardog13 said:Well you wont have to worry hard about going to war seeing as Finland is a pretty peaceful nation, so the worst that could happen is that you wont like it, and you leave after your first tour. Which after words you wont have to much finding a job since people who were in the military usually get priority for employment. Im actually joining the United States Air Force after college, hopefully I can be a pilot.
If I remember right they have a short conscription. I think he means he is going to join for a career.Agrael said:Hold on now, friend from the north (Estonia here). Isn't the Finnish military mandatory ? It sure is here.
But yeah, it's a smart choice. Military service is a plus on your CV all the time.
Indeed, nationalism is a joke.. Kinda like political correctness, but I won't trail off.mrtenk said:*Snip*
I KNOW I WAS SUPRISED BY IT TOO. I WAS TOTALLY EXPECTING TO JUMP OVER A CRAVASS ON A SNOWMOBILE THEN BLOW UP A NUKE IN SPACE. MAN MY IMPRESSION WAS TOTALLY OFF.ChocoFace said:There's a difference!?Alarid said:It is the right choice if you can distinguish between MW2 and real life.
