I went out tonight and bought a 250gig Xbox 360 with the live Gold starter package, Black Ops, and Medal of Honor. Are there any other games I should be looking into when I get my paycheck next week?

What kinds of games are you in to? It's easy to grab a list of the top-ten in popularity but it'd be easier for us to make suggestions (old and new) if we know what you like to play/have probably played before.

I usually play Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario, etc. But I am slowly getting into shooters and I've been into RPGs for a long time.

I recommend Halo( 3 or reach), Oblivion, Assasin's creed, GTA 4.
That should keep you busy for a while.

Two of my friends just had their house broken into and both their 360's stolen, be protective of your console

Well first, get yourself some Microsoft points and hit the Xbox Live Arcade. Get Beyond Good and Evil HD; that's an absolute must. Then spend some more points on some other fun XBLA games, like Portal: Still Alive if you haven't played Portal, perhaps Castle Crashers, Bastion... good stuff.

If you haven't played the first two Halo games, get them on Xbox Originals, because they're incredible, then work your way through the series after that. GET THE FIRST TWO FIRST. I'm tired of people jumping in on the third one and complaining that it has a bad story. Ugh.

Play the Gears of War games if you're interested in seeing the series that redefined third-person shooters; they play well and the second and third ones actually have a decent story.

As for non-exclusives, give Mirror's Edge a try. Definitely play the Mass Effect series; all of them, in order. Get Red Dead Redemption. Play the campaigns for the first two Modern Warfare games (since Black Ops' campaign is a lazy, sloppy, mediocre mess). Definitely check out Alan Wake, and certainly get Dark Souls now that it's out.

Just some suggestions.

Asking for a list of games you should buy on a 6 year old system would bankrupt you.

But if you insist, I'll add a couple exclusives which seem to be the point of buying one system over the next.

the Halo's, if only because they're the "Xbox series". Rent them if you want, you will finish halo 3 before you get home from the store.

Gears of War seems to be popular for some reason.

Uh... I'm not sure how you can be protective besides locking your doors at night. Do you mean disconnecting and locking away all your stuff every time you aren't using it? That seems a little... mentally unstable.

For those suggesting Oblivion, I had the game originally for 360, and while it is fine these days you are much, much better off getting it on PC if that is an option for you. Aside from the extensive patches (both official and unofficial), there are excellent game improving mods out there now.

oblivion is like an FPS mixed with an RPG, you should enjoy it.
I'd even go as far to suggest Fallout 3, unless you want to jump right into Fallout: New Vegas. Both are Oblivion-esque but in a different environment, plus guns. Just Cause 2 is something I constantly return to and play in spurts. I recently played through Arkham Asylum again and it's got replay value, and if you were interested in Arkham City it wouldn't hurt to start at the beginning.

For an older, easily very cheap game I really liked Marvel Ultimate Alliance (only the first game, mind) which was a surprisingly fun game to play solo or with friends.

You should catch up on older ones rather than keep up with the new games (unless you got the console for a particular new game). You can get to those when their prices drop. There's a ton I'd recommend.

I'll try to vary it a bit:
-Mass Effect 1 and 2 (Sci-Fi RPG-Third Person Shooter hybrid)
-Bully: Scholarship Edition (sandbox, falls on the zany side)
-Bayonetta (Very polished and fluid action game. I'd take it over the God of War series any day)
-Outland (2D puzzle platformer with a fantastic art style)
-Fallout: New Vegas (Post apocalyptic open-world RPG)
-Red Dead Redemption (sandbox, falls on the serious side. It has a great story and wonderful visuals)
-Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (Action-Adventure. Great story, characters, and visuals)
-Assassin's Creed series (Action-Adventure-Platforming-Stealth-Sandbox? It spans all that. It becomes more and more sandbox-like further into the series, with Brotherhood definitely being one)
-Batman: Arkham Asylum (Action)

I'm pretty partial to Fallout: New Vegas. It's a good game, has a classic CRPG feel and shooter elements. Play on hardcore, a lot of fun. With all the patches it runs like a dream. The original Dead Rising is a good game that was a system exclusive and it's cheap now (ten dollars!). As much fanfare as oblivion gets in my opinion it's not that good. The main problem in Oblivion is monsters level up with you. Eventually you get into, no joke, four minute fights with forest vermin. The other alternative is that you avoid leveling up at all, but an RPG where you can't level up is kind of missing the point. If you haven't played it yet, Mass Effect one and two are good. I'd recommend playing through ME1 to get the best feel for the story, characters and universe but you can also buy the interactive comic book and jump straight into ME 2 with your own, custom made world.

There's some 360 exclusive to check out like Halo and Gears of War as well as Fable. Don't be afraid to check out the bargain bins. Lots of good stuff in there from a couple years back if you're discriminating in what you pick out. Dead or Alive 4 for instance is a fun fighter you can pick up and play with your pals that was a 360 exclusive and only costs about 8-10 bucks now used. I'd also recommend Red Dead Redemption, with a warning that the anti government bull gets ridiculous and hard to swallow at points. In one scene John Marsden our hero, complains about the law to the deputies, the sherrif complains about the federal government to Marsden, and when they get to a farmhouse the wailing farm wives bemoan the iron fist of the sherrif and the evils of authority. The thing is it's all played straight. When the closeted homosexual and necrophiliac grave robber is telling you how much he hates the damned guv'ment you have to eye his belief structure with some scrutiny. Enjoy it for it's beautiful free-roaming western countryside, but play the campaign with the sound off.

I'm surprised how much I've been enjoying GOW 3's multiplayer. The co-op's a lot of fun, as is horde mode and the vs modes are a nice change of pace from the realistic shooter craze. It's also a surprising amount of fun to ambush somebody with a chainsaw.

by genre(sorta): Bioshock or Portal. Dragon Age: origins, or Oblivion, Assasin's Creed.

Those come to mind.
